What is CASP, and why is it now called SecurityX?

CASP stands for CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner. CompTIA has renamed the certification SecurityX, and as checked the word CASP no longer appears on CompTIA’s own certification page — SecurityX vs CASP is not two certifications, it is one certification before and after a rename.

It is CompTIA’s advanced, practitioner-level security credential, aimed at senior security engineering and architecture in live environments rather than at management.

Two unrelated organisations share the letters: in California, CASP is the Certified Access Specialist Program for accessibility inspections and reports, and in autism services CASP is the Council of Autism Service Providers, which publishes practice guidelines. Neither has anything to do with this certification.

What is on the CAS-005 exam?

The current exam is CAS-005, exam version V5, launched on 17 December 2024. CompTIA states it as a maximum of 90 questions mixing multiple-choice with performance-based items, in a maximum of 165 minutes.

Grading is where SecurityX differs from most CompTIA exams: pass/fail only, with no scaled score. There is no number to compare against a target, and no partial credit to chase — which is why the performance-based items matter more here than a question count suggests.

CompTIA expects to retire an exam version roughly three years after launch and estimates 2027 for this one, so any CAS-004 material you find is for the previous version.

What are the CASP requirements?

CompTIA enforces no prerequisites. The CASP certification requirements are stated as recommended experience: a minimum of ten years of general hands-on IT experience, including five years of hands-on security, with Network+, Security+, CySA+, Cloud+ and PenTest+ or equivalent knowledge.

Recommended is the operative word — nobody checks it at the test centre. But the recommendation is unusually specific, and it is a fair description of who passes.

CASP vs CISSP, and CySA vs CASP

CASP vs CISSP is the clearest comparison to make, because the two sit at a similar level and split by role. CISSP is ISC2’s security-management credential, scored to 700 of 1,000, with a five-year experience requirement that is enforced. SecurityX is CompTIA’s hands-on practitioner credential, pass/fail, with experience recommended but not enforced. CISSP is the one that opens management doors; SecurityX is the one that stays technical.

CySA vs CASP is a difference of tier inside CompTIA’s own stack. CySA+ is the analyst-level exam and is named in the recommended background for SecurityX — so CompTIA’s own answer is that CySA+ comes first.

How much does SecurityX cost?

CompTIA does not put a figure on the certification page. The voucher price is set in CompTIA’s store rather than on the page describing the exam, and the amount depends on whether you buy the voucher alone or inside a bundle with CertMaster products and Retake Assurance.

CASP courses and study guide

CompTIA runs its own CASP courses under the CertMaster brand, and the exam objectives for CAS-005 are published as a free download. Those objectives are the scope: a CASP study guide written for CAS-004 covers a retired version, and with the rename there is a lot of CAS-004 material still in circulation under the old name.

The practical check before you buy any CASP course: does it say CAS-005 or V5 on it. If it says CASP+ and CAS-004, it is the previous exam.

If you are asking what is the CASP certification, the short answer is: the CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) certification still exists, under the name SecurityX. The CompTIA CASP certification and SecurityX are the same credential, and the CASP exam you would sit today is CAS-005.

That matters when you search, because most material still uses the old name. “CASP certification CompTIA” and “CompTIA SecurityX” lead to the same exam objectives; the version code is what tells you whether the material is current.

What is the CASP test like in practice?

The format figures are shown higher up this page. What they mean for preparation: because the CASP test mixes multiple-choice with performance-based questions and is graded pass/fail, there is no score report telling you that you missed by a few points. You either demonstrated the skills or you did not.

Performance-based items ask you to do something — configure, analyse, choose and justify — rather than recall a definition. Plan study time accordingly: reading alone rarely prepares you for those items. Hands-on practice in a lab environment does.

CompTIA’s own SecurityX training is listed on the certification page under its CertMaster brand: CertMaster Perform, CertMaster Practice and CertMaster Labs. The page sells them alone or in bundles with the exam voucher; it does not show prices on the page itself.

Choosing a SecurityX boot camp

A bootcamp compresses preparation into a few intensive days. For an exam aimed at people with years of security experience, that can work — if the experience is already there and the boot camp only needs to close gaps against the objectives.

Before booking, check that it follows the CAS-005 objectives domain by domain, that it includes hands-on lab time for the performance-based items, and whether the exam voucher is included or extra. A boot camp cannot substitute for the experience CompTIA recommends; it can only organise it.

The most reliable CompTIA SecurityX study guide is the official CAS-005 exam objectives document, because it defines the scope. Any CompTIA SecurityX CAS-005 certification guide, book or course is only as good as its match to that document.

A practical way to use it: go through the objectives line by line and mark each as “could do it at work tomorrow”, “know the theory” or “new to me”. The second and third groups are your study plan.

How to renew SecurityX

CompTIA states that SecurityX is valid for three years from the date you pass the exam, and that it requires 75 continuing education units (CEUs) to renew. You can earn CEUs through qualifying activities, renew by passing other eligible IT certifications, or pass the latest release of the SecurityX exam.

Is SecurityX worth it?

SecurityX is worth it if you want to stay hands-on at a senior level and prove it with a CompTIA credential for which CompTIA recommends CySA+ and PenTest+ level knowledge. It is less useful if your next step is security management, where a management-focused credential fits the role better.
