dbt Labs currently names two certifications: the dbt Analytics Engineering Certification and the dbt Architect Certification. The Analytics Engineering exam covers modelling, testing, documentation and deployment; the Architect exam covers environment orchestration, role-based access control, tool integrations and collaborative development workflows.
If you are looking for a dbt labs certification as a developer who writes models day to day, the Analytics Engineering exam is the one. The Architect exam is aimed at the people who set up and run dbt for a team.

Is there a dbt developer certification?
Not under that name. dbt Labs’ certification pages list the Analytics Engineering and Architect certifications only. A search for a dbt developer certification usually leads to the same exam, because dbt Learn titles its preparation track the “dbt Certified Developer Path”.
So if a job ad or a colleague asks for a dbt developer credential, the exam that matches is the dbt Analytics Engineering Certification described on this page.

Is there a dbt Fundamentals certification?
dbt Fundamentals is a course, not a certification exam. It is a dbt Learn course listed at five hours, and dbt Labs says it ends with a quiz and that learners who complete it receive a badge. That badge shows you finished the course; it is not the proctored dbt certification.
There is still a direct link between the two: the official Study Guide lists dbt Fundamentals as a first-checkpoint course for the Analytics Engineering exam. Calling it a dbt fundamentals certification is common shorthand, but if an employer asks for dbt certification, they usually mean the US$200 proctored exam.

dbt Analytics Engineering Certification exam format and cost
The dbt analytics engineering certification exam has 65 questions and a time limit of 2 hours. It is online proctored, and rescheduling or cancelling goes through Talview according to the Study Guide.
Not every question is multiple choice. The Study Guide lists multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, hotspot, build list and discrete option multiple choice (DOMC) items. An undisclosed number of unscored questions is included; they are unmarked and look the same as scored ones, so treat every question as if it counts.
The exam costs US$200. If you do not pass, you may schedule a retake, but you pay a registration fee for each retake; dbt Labs does not print a separate retake price. On languages, dbt Labs’ sources disagree: the certification page lists English, Japanese, Spanish, French and Portuguese, the Study Guide English and Japanese. dbt Analytics Engineering passing score
You need 65% or higher to pass. dbt Labs states that each correct answer scores one point and all questions are weighted equally; unscored questions do not count.
With 65 questions, a 65% bar leaves little room for weak topics. Because dbt Labs does not publish a weighting per topic, aim to be solid on all seven areas rather than betting on a few.

dbt Analytics Engineering Certification exam study guide
The official resource is the dbt Analytics Engineering Certification Exam Study Guide, a free PDF from dbt Labs updated for dbt Core 1.11. It sets out the exam rules, the seven topics, sample questions and a study plan in three checkpoints.
Checkpoint 1 starts with the dbt Fundamentals course plus the documentation on materializations, snapshots, incremental models, packages and core commands. Checkpoint 2 adds the dbt Mesh model governance material — contracts, versions and constraints. Checkpoint 3 covers the Advanced Testing and Unit Testing courses and documentation on exposures, source freshness, clone, retry and state.
Before any of that, the guide expects foundational SQL — joins, CTEs, window functions — and Git. It also points to the #dbt-certification channel in the dbt community Slack and recommends pairing the material with real-world dbt use. Ten sample questions appear on the certification page and in the guide.

How long is the dbt certification valid?
The Study Guide states that the credential expires two years after the date it is awarded. dbt Labs does not describe a separate renewal process; its certification blog says that if you let the certification lapse, you can pass the exam again to regain it.
Because the exam tracks a specific dbt Core version, the content you sit two years later may differ from the one you passed.
