Elastic Certified Engineer exam: cost, format and objectives
The Elastic Certified Engineer is Elastic’s hands-on certification for Elasticsearch. Instead of multiple-choice questions you solve real tasks on live clusters, currently on Elastic Stack 9.3, with the Elastic documentation as your only reference. An attempt costs $500 USD, the result is pass or fail, and the certification is valid for two years.

What is the Elastic Certified Engineer certification?
The Elastic Certified Engineer certification is Elastic’s credential for Elasticsearch practitioners who can develop solutions for indexing, searching and managing data. It is awarded by Elastic itself, the company behind Elasticsearch and Kibana.
What sets it apart is the exam. There are no multiple-choice or fill-in-the-blank questions: you are given servers and a set of real-world tasks, and you have to complete them on the cluster. The certification therefore says that you can actually configure, index, query and administer Elasticsearch — not that you recognise the right answer in a list.

How much does the Elastic Certified Engineer exam cost?
Elastic charges $500 USD per attempt for the Elastic Certified Engineer exam. Reattempts are not discounted — if you fail, you buy a new attempt at the same price — and an exam purchase is not refundable.
Once purchased, you have a one-year window to take the exam before the attempt expires. If you take exams through an Elastic subscription, all attempts expire together with the subscription.

Elastic Certified Engineer exam format
The Elastic Certified Engineer exam is a timed, hands-on, performance-based exam. You work on Elasticsearch clusters provided in the exam environment, and the tasks are based on Elastic Stack version 9.3. Elastic does not publish the exam length or the number of tasks.
The exam is delivered online and is available from anywhere at any time. A proctor watches you and your screen remotely through audio and video. Before you start you complete a 360° webcam scan of your testing area, including the full desk, your face must stay visible throughout, and Elastic states that Linux is not supported as the operating system for taking the exam.
You may use the Elastic documentation during the exam. All other external websites, including Google and Stack Overflow, are strictly prohibited — so knowing where things live in the documentation is part of the preparation.

Elastic Certified Engineer passing score and results
There is no published passing percentage. Elastic states that candidates receive either a pass or a fail score. In practice that means every task counts and partial familiarity with a topic is risky: a task that is configured almost correctly can still leave the cluster in the wrong state.
Results are not instant. Elastic says you will typically receive your exam results within 7 to 10 business days.

Elastic Certified Engineer exam objectives
Elastic groups the exam objectives into four areas and expects you to complete all of them with only the assistance of the Elastic documentation. Indexing Data is by far the largest area, because it includes search and aggregations.
- Installation and Configuration — deploy and start a cluster that meets given requirements, configure nodes, secure the cluster with Elasticsearch Security, define role-based access control
- Indexing Data — define indices, CRUD operations, index aliases, index templates and dynamic templates, the Reindex and Update By Query APIs, ingest pipelines including Painless
- Search and aggregations (within Indexing Data) — term and phrase queries, Boolean queries, highlighting, sorting, pagination, the scroll API, fuzzy matching, search templates, querying across clusters, metric, bucket and sub-aggregations
- Mappings and Text Analysis — define mappings, custom analyzers, multi-fields, nested objects
- Cluster Administration — shard allocation to specific nodes, allocation awareness and forced awareness, diagnosing shard issues and cluster health, snapshot backup and restore, hot/warm architecture, cross-cluster search

Prerequisites and recommended training
There are no formal prerequisites. Elastic highly recommends that candidates attend its Elasticsearch Engineer I and Elasticsearch Engineer II training courses before the exam, but notes that they are not required.
Whichever way you prepare, practise on the same major version the exam uses. With the exam on 9.3, rehearse on a 9.x cluster so that APIs, defaults and documentation pages match what you will see on the day.

Retakes and certification validity
If you do not pass, you must wait 14 days before reattempting, and you need to purchase a new attempt.
The Elastic Certified Engineer certification is valid for two years from the exam date. Elastic states that passing the exam again while your certification is still active extends it by two years, so recertifying before expiry keeps the credential continuous.

How to prepare for the Elastic Certified Engineer exam
Treat the objective list as a lab checklist. For each item, do it on a running cluster from a blank state, using only the Elastic documentation: create the index template, write the ingest pipeline, configure the analyzer, take and restore the snapshot. If you need anything other than the documentation to finish a task, that task is not ready.
Practise the administration objectives as carefully as the search ones. Shard allocation, allocation awareness and restoring cluster health are easy to under-practise because they need more than one node — set up a small multi-node cluster so you can rehearse them.

Elastic Certified Engineer exam rules and dumps
Elastic lists cheating and the use of unauthorised materials or devices as prohibited conduct. It reserves the right to review and invalidate exam results in the event of a violation, and violators may have certifications revoked and face a ban from six months up to a lifetime.
Leaked answers are also of little use on a performance-based exam: the tasks are checked on the cluster you configured, not against a remembered letter.
