The EPA Section 608 certification exam

The EPA Section 608 certification exam is a sectioned test: a Core section plus one or more type sections (Type I, Type II, Type III), each with at least 25 questions. A Universal test has 100 questions, and the minimum passing score on closed-book tests is 70 percent. EPA-approved certifying organizations give the test; EPA itself does not.

What is EPA Section 608 certification?

EPA Section 608 certification, officially EPA Section 608 technician certification, is the credential EPA requires for technicians who work on equipment that could release refrigerants. You earn it by passing an EPA-approved test, and the test is specific to the type of equipment you want to work on.

Every EPA Section 608 test is given by an EPA-approved certifying organization. EPA sets the rules and the test bank; the organization runs the test and issues your card. Once earned, the credential does not expire.

How many questions are on the EPA 608 test?

The regulation requires each test to include at least 25 Core questions and at least 25 questions from each technical group you test for. Core plus Type II is therefore at least 50 questions; Core plus all three types is the Universal test.

Questions are drawn from an EPA test bank that holds more questions than an individual test needs, so the mix can differ between test forms.

How many questions are on the EPA 608 universal exam?

The Universal test described in the regulation has 100 questions: 25 Core questions and 75 technical questions, which is 25 each for Type I, Type II and Type III.

Candidates often ask it this way: the EPA 608 Universal certification requires passing how tests? Four sections in total, Core plus Type I, Type II and Type III. You may take the Universal test all at once, or combine passing scores on separate Type I, Type II and Type III tests.

EPA Section 608 universal certification and the proctored Core

For EPA Section 608 universal certification, the Core section must be taken as a proctored exam. A Core test taken as an open book exam cannot be used for Universal. On proctored tests, proctors must make sure candidates use no notes or training materials, and programs must provide at least one proctor for every 50 people testing at the same time at a site.

Passing score for the EPA Section 608 certification test

The minimum passing score for closed-book Type I, Type II, Type III and Universal tests is 70 percent. Type I may also be offered as a mail-in test; there the minimum passing score is 84 percent, and the program must have a way to verify the identity of the person taking it.

If you need the EPA Section 608 certification test given orally, the regulation lets you request that in writing at least 30 days before the test, with an explanation of why.

EPA Section 608 certification online

EPA’s list of approved programs notes that some offer remote or online testing that does not require travel to a testing location. EPA Section 608 certification online follows the same rules as testing on site: the program must be EPA-approved, and for Universal the Core section must be proctored.

EPA Section 608 practice exam: what to practise

A useful EPA Section 608 practice exam follows EPA’s own test topics section by section: Core (environmental impact, the Clean Air Act and Montreal Protocol, the Section 608 regulations, refrigerants and oils, recovery, evacuation, safety, shipping), then Type I, Type II and Type III. EPA does not review or approve preparatory materials, so check any EPA Section 608 practice test against that topic list.
