EPA 608 certification: types, exam rules and how to get certified
EPA 608 certification is the federal credential technicians need to service or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants. You pass an EPA-approved test from an approved certifying organization: a Core section plus Type I, Type II or Type III, or all of them for Universal. Each section has at least 25 questions, the closed-book passing score is 70 percent, and the credential does not expire.

What is the EPA 608 certification?
EPA regulations under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants into the atmosphere to be certified. The credential is officially called Section 608 Technician Certification; EPA 608 technician certification and EPA 608 HVAC certification are the everyday names for the same thing.
People often call it an EPA 608 license, but EPA does not license technicians itself. You earn a certification by passing an EPA-approved test, and the approved certifying organization that gave the test issues your card. Apprentices are exempt while they are closely and continually supervised by a certified technician.

EPA 608 certification types: Type I, II, III and Universal
EPA has four types of certification, and the tests are specific to the equipment you want to work on:
- Type I: servicing small appliances
- Type II: servicing or disposing of high- or very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs
- Type III: servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances
- Universal: servicing all types of equipment

EPA 608 universal certification
EPA 608 universal certification covers all equipment types. Under the regulation, a Universal test may be taken all at once, or you can combine passing scores on separate Type I, Type II and Type III tests. The Universal test described in the regulation has 100 questions: 25 Core and 75 technical.
One rule catches candidates out: a Core test taken as an open book exam cannot be used for Universal Certification. For Universal, the Core test must be taken as a proctored exam.

EPA 608 exam format and passing score
Every EPA 608 exam includes at least 25 Core questions and at least 25 questions for each technical type you test for. The questions come from an EPA test bank that holds more questions than any single test needs, so two candidates do not necessarily see the same EPA 608 test.
The minimum passing score on closed-book tests is 70 percent. Type I can also be offered as a mail-in test, and there the minimum is 84 percent. On proctored tests, proctors must make sure candidates use no notes or training materials. If you ask in writing at least 30 days before the test and explain why, a program can give the test orally.

How to get EPA 608 certified
The steps follow directly from EPA’s rules. Decide which equipment you will work on, choose a program from EPA’s list of approved certifying organizations, and pass the Core section plus the matching type, or all three types for Universal.
After you pass, the program issues your wallet card. Keep a copy of your certificate at your place of business, and keep it until three years after you stop working as a technician.
- Pick the certification type: Type I, II, III or Universal
- Choose an EPA-approved certifying organization
- Pass the EPA 608 certification test: Core plus your type section(s)
- Receive your card from the program, not from EPA

EPA 608 certification online
EPA 608 certification online is possible. EPA’s list of approved programs notes that some programs offer remote or online testing that does not require you to travel to a physical testing location; the list marks programs as online only, remote testing available or on-site only.
If you take an EPA 608 test online and want Universal, check that the Core section is proctored. An open-book Core test does not count towards EPA 608 universal certification online or in person. Before you book any EPA 608 exam online, confirm the program is on EPA’s current approved list.

EPA 608 certification cost
EPA does not set or publish a price. The regulation allows certifying programs to charge reasonable fees for administering the tests, so the cost of EPA 608 certification depends on the program you choose and on whether you test for one type or Universal.
Compare fees for the exact format you need, for example proctored Core plus all three types for Universal, and check whether retakes are charged again. EPA also says it does not review or approve training or preparatory materials, so a bundled course is the program’s own offer, not an EPA requirement.

What the EPA 608 test covers
EPA publishes the test topics for each section. Core covers environmental impacts and ozone depletion, the Clean Air Act and Montreal Protocol, the Section 608 regulations including the venting ban and sales restriction, substitute refrigerants and oils, the refrigeration cycle, recover, recycle and reclaim, recovery techniques, dehydration evacuation, safety and shipping.
Type I focuses on small appliances and recovery from them; Type II on leak detection, leak repair, recovery requirements and safety for high-pressure systems; Type III on low-pressure systems, including leak testing, recovery, recharging and purge units.

EPA 608 test questions and answers: why answer files do not help
Searches for an EPA 608 test answers PDF, EPA 608 type 1 test answers or EPA 608 exam answers are common. EPA does not publish answer keys. The regulation requires certifying programs to ensure the confidentiality and security of the test questions and answer keys, and the EPA test bank holds more questions than any single test uses.
That makes a fixed list, whether it is sold as EPA 608 test answers 2018 or as an EPA 608 test questions and answers PDF, a poor guide to the test you will actually sit. Practise EPA 608 test questions and answers with explanations instead, so you understand why an answer is right.

Does EPA 608 certification expire? Lost cards
No. EPA states that Section 608 Technician Certification credentials do not expire, and credentials issued by programs while they were approved remain valid.
EPA does not issue certification cards and cannot replace a lost one. Contact the organization that tested you; it is required to keep records of the cards it issues. If it has closed, EPA describes alternatives, and if none applies you would need to retake the test.

Free EPA 608 practice test options
EPA’s own free resource is its test topics page, which lists what each section covers. EPA does not publish an official practice exam or EPA 608 sample test on the pages we checked, and it does not review or approve preparatory materials. If you look for an EPA 608 certification practice test free of charge, use the EPA topic list to check that it covers every Core, Type I, Type II and Type III topic.
Can you get EPA 608 certification online free? EPA sets no fee and only allows programs to charge reasonable fees, so the price is the program’s decision. Check the program’s own terms.

EPA 608 practice questions
Certsqill’s EPA 608 practice questions are expert-developed and mapped to EPA’s published test topics. Each EPA 608 practice test covers a section: an EPA 608 core practice exam, Type I, an EPA 608 type 2 practice exam and Type III, plus an EPA 608 universal practice test that combines all four. Start with the EPA 608 core practice test, because Core is part of every certification.
Every question comes with an explanation for each answer option, and your results build a readiness score per section, so you know whether Core or a type section needs more work before you book. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
