EPA 608 certification training, classes and courses

EPA 608 certification training is optional: EPA requires technicians to pass an EPA-approved test, not to complete a course. EPA approves the organizations that give the test, but it does not review or approve any training or preparatory programs or materials. A course is only worth it if it covers EPA’s published test topics for your section.

Do you need an EPA 608 certification course?

No. EPA’s requirement is that technicians pass an EPA-approved test given by an EPA-approved certifying organization. EPA’s requirements page does not list any course, class or training hours as a condition.

An EPA 608 certification class can still help if you are new to refrigerant work, but taking one is your choice, not a step EPA prescribes. Apprentices may work without certification while they are closely and continually supervised by a certified technician, which is also how many people gain hands-on experience before the test.

EPA approves the test, not the EPA 608 training

EPA states plainly that it does not review or approve any training preparatory programs or materials. So no EPA 608 training course can be EPA-approved in the sense that the test is.

What EPA does approve is the certifying program. When an EPA section 608 certification course includes the exam, check that the organization giving the test is on EPA’s current list of approved programs. The training part is the provider’s own product.

EPA 608 certification online course or EPA 608 classes in person

An EPA 608 online course and EPA 608 classes in a classroom teach the same EPA topics. The difference that matters is the test: some approved programs offer remote or online testing, others are on-site only.

If you plan an EPA 608 certification online training route and want Universal, check that the Core section will be proctored. EPA states that a Core test taken as an open book exam cannot be used to get Universal Certification.

  • Type I: small appliances, recovery with working and inoperative compressors, access valves
  • Type II: leak detection and repair, recovery requirements and techniques for high-pressure systems, safety
  • Type III: low-pressure systems, leak testing, recovery, recharging, purge units, safety
