EPA 608 study guide: what to learn for each section

The best starting point for any EPA 608 study guide is free: EPA’s own test topics page lists what the Core, Type I, Type II and Type III sections cover. EPA does not review or approve any study materials, so use that list to judge every EPA 608 book, flashcard set or practice test, and expect a closed-book test if you want Universal.

The free EPA 608 study guide: EPA’s test topics

EPA publishes the topics for each section on its Section 608 test topics page. It is the closest thing to an official EPA section 608 study guide, and it costs nothing. If you want a free EPA 608 study guide, start there and turn each bullet into a question you can answer from memory.

If you are searching for an EPA 608 study guide PDF: EPA’s topic list is a web page, not a downloadable guide, and we found no official EPA study guide PDF on the pages checked. Print or save the topic page if you want it offline.

EPA 608 certification study guide: Core

  • Clean Air Act and Montreal Protocol: phaseout dates for CFCs and R-22, venting prohibitions, maximum penalty

  • Substitute refrigerants and oils, the refrigeration cycle, recover, recycle and reclaim
  • Recovery techniques, dehydration evacuation, safety (including the 80% cylinder fill limit and nitrogen for leak testing) and shipping labels

EPA section 608 certification study guide: Type I, II and III

Each type section adds equipment-specific rules. Study only the ones you will test for, unless you are going for Universal.

  • Type I: the definition of small appliance, evacuation requirements by recovery equipment date, recovering from appliances with inoperative compressors, access valves, HFC-134a as a likely CFC-12 substitute
  • Type II: leak detection, leak repair and recordkeeping, recovering liquid first, evacuation requirements, the 15-pound limit on system-dependent recovery, ASHRAE Standard 15
  • Type III: leak testing low-pressure systems, heating oil to 130°F before removal, preventing water freezing, recharging vapor before liquid, the purge unit, a refrigerant sensor for R-123

EPA 608 universal study guide

An EPA 608 universal study guide is simply all four sections together: Core plus Type I, Type II and Type III. Any EPA 608 universal certification study guide should give Core the same weight as each type, because Core appears on every test.

Plan for a closed-book Core. EPA states that a Core test taken as an open book exam cannot be used for Universal, and on proctored tests candidates may use no notes or training materials. The minimum passing score on closed-book tests is 70 percent.

Choosing an EPA 608 book: is there a best EPA 608 study guide?

EPA does not review or approve any training or preparatory materials, so there is no EPA-endorsed EPA 608 book and no official best EPA 608 study guide. Judge any EPA 608 exam study guide by one test: does it cover every topic on EPA’s list for your sections, including the current regulation points such as the sales restriction and the AHRI 700-2016 standard?

If you look for an EPA 608 study guide 2026 edition, check that it matches EPA’s topic page as it stands when you study; we checked it on 19 October 2026.

EPA 608 flashcards and practice questions

EPA 608 flashcards work well for the fact-heavy parts of Core: dates, definitions, the three Rs, cylinder rules and labels. Scenario topics such as recovery requirements and leak repair are better practised with full questions.

Certsqill’s EPA 608 practice questions are expert-developed and mapped to EPA’s topic list, with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per section, so your EPA 608 test study guide becomes a measurable plan.
