Series 7 exam format: questions, time, passing score and pass rate
The Series 7 exam has 130 multiple-choice items, of which 125 count toward your score, and you get 3 hours and 45 minutes. The passing score is 72 on FINRA’s equated scale. FINRA does not publish a pass rate for the Series 7 alone; its only recent figure pools the SIE, Series 7 and Series 24.

How many questions are on the Series 7 exam?
Each candidate sees 130 items: 125 scored multiple-choice questions, each with four answer choices, and 5 pretest items that do not count. The pretest items are unidentified, so treat every question as if it counts.
The 125 scored questions are split across FINRA’s four job functions: 9 on seeking business, 11 on opening accounts, 91 on information, recommendations and records, and 14 on processing and confirming transactions.

How long is the Series 7 exam?
You have 3 hours and 45 minutes for all 130 items, which works out to about 1 minute 44 seconds per item. FINRA allows breaks only for restroom use at the test center, and the timer does not stop while you are away.
The test center provides a four-function calculator and erasable note boards; you bring a valid government-issued photo ID with signature and nothing else. Study materials are not allowed.

Series 7 passing score
FINRA lists the Series 7 passing score as 72. Scores are equated: FINRA places every candidate’s result on a common scale so that candidates who received different question sets are held to the same standard. That is why 72 should not be read as “72% of questions correct”.
There is no penalty for guessing, so a blank answer can only cost you points.

What the score report shows
At a test center the result appears on screen shortly after you finish, and you receive a printed pass/fail report. If you pass, FINRA gives no further scoring detail.
If you fail, the report shows your overall score and your performance in each topic section. Use that breakdown to plan the retake: it tells you which functions cost you the most points.

Series 7 pass rate: what FINRA publishes
FINRA does not publish a separate Series 7 pass rate on its exam pages. In a 2026 rule filing on retake waiting periods, FINRA analyzed candidates with first attempts in 2024 for its three most popular exams, the SIE, the Series 7 and the Series 24, and stated that over 70 percent of individuals pass these exams on the first attempt.
That figure is pooled across three exams, so it is not a passing rate for Series 7 candidates specifically. Any exact percentage for the Series 7 alone that you see elsewhere does not come from the FINRA documents we checked.

Booking your exam window
After your firm enrolls you, FINRA posts a 120-day window in which the exam must be taken. You book the appointment with Prometric. The standard option is a test center; for exams such as the Series 7, online delivery requires an approved accommodation.

Practising for the format
Knowing the numbers helps only if you can work at that pace. Certsqill’s Series 7 questions are expert-developed, follow FINRA’s four functions and come with an explanation for every answer option, plus a readiness score per function.
