Series 7 study guide: what to study and which materials to use
The best Series 7 study guide to start from is FINRA’s own content outline: it lists the four job functions, their weights and every rule area the 125 scored questions are written from. Function 3, on investments, recommendations and records, is 73% of the exam, so that is where most of your study time belongs.

Start with the official outline
FINRA publishes a content outline for the Series 7 and links it from the exam page together with an exam tutorial, the SIE practice test and the qualification exam FAQ. The outline is not a textbook, and it contains no sample questions, but it is the only official list of what can be tested.
Read it once in full, then turn it into your checklist. Every topic you cannot explain in a sentence or two is a study item.

Study guide for Series 7: weight your time by function
FINRA weights the four functions very unevenly. A simple rule is to split your hours roughly in line with the weights, while making sure no function is left untouched.
- F3 Information, recommendations, asset transfers and records (73%): equities, packaged products, options, debt securities, and municipal and government securities; suitability; required disclosures.
- F4 Processing transactions (11%): quotes, order types, short sales, trade recording and confirmation, delivery and settlement, errors and complaints, margin requirements.
- F2 Opening accounts (9%): account types and disclosures, customer information and documents, screening and escalating suspicious activity, investment profile, supervisory approval.
- F1 Seeking business (7%): contacting customers, marketing materials and their approval, describing products including new issues.

The rule areas behind the questions
The outline names the rule books the questions draw on. You do not need to memorise rule numbers, but you should know which body regulates what, because many questions turn on that distinction.
- FINRA Rules, SEC Rules and Regulations
- Cboe Rules (options), MSRB Rules (municipal securities)
- NYSE Rules, Nasdaq Stock Market Rules
- Internal Revenue Code, ERISA
- Federal Reserve, Trust Indenture Act of 1939, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs)

Choosing Series 7 study materials
FINRA’s exam page lists no Series 7 textbook, so Series 7 study materials beyond FINRA’s outline and exam tutorial come from private providers. Before you buy, check that the material is mapped to the current outline and its four functions, covers every rule area listed above, and includes questions with explanations rather than answer keys alone.
Since you may not bring any reference material into the testing session, materials that train recall and application under time pressure are more useful than reference books you would only look things up in.

A study plan in three phases
Phase one: work through the outline function by function, starting with F3. Phase two: answer questions by topic and write down every rule or calculation you got wrong. Phase three: take full-length timed sets of 130 items in 3 hours and 45 minutes to build pace.
If you have to retake, use your score report: after a fail, FINRA’s printed report shows your performance in each topic section, which tells you exactly where to restart.
