What is the GCPN certification?
GCPN stands for GIAC Cloud Penetration Tester. GIAC says the certification validates a practitioner’s fluency in cloud technologies and readiness to conduct cloud-focused penetration testing, and that holders are qualified to assess and test the security of systems, networks, architecture and cloud technologies.
It is written for both sides of the house. GIAC lists penetration testers, vulnerability analysts and risk assessment officers alongside DevOps engineers and site reliability engineers — people who attack cloud environments and people who build and run them.
The scope is multi-cloud. The objectives cover AWS authentication and services, Microsoft Azure services and attacks, containers and Kubernetes, and the CI/CD pipelines that deploy cloud native applications.

How much does the GCPN cert cost?
A GCPN certification attempt costs $999, in US dollars and excluding sales tax. The other costs on GIAC’s price list are worth knowing before you book.
If you miss a proctored appointment, GIAC charges a $175 reseating fee and gives you a 7-day extension from your current deadline.
- Certification attempt — $999
- Exam retake — $899
- Attempt extension — $479
- Practice exam — $399
- Certification renewal — $499

GCPN exam format and passing score
The GCPN is one proctored exam of 75 questions with a 2-hour limit. All GIAC exams are web-based and must be proctored, remotely through ProctorU or onsite through Pearson VUE, and you have 120 days from activation to take it.
The passing score is 70% for the exam version released on or after 13 February 2021. GIAC asks candidates to check the Certification Information section of their GIAC account for the format and passing score that apply to their attempt.
Like all GIAC exams, GCPN is open book but not open internet or open computer: hardcopy books and notes are allowed, while hardcopy material resembling practice or exam questions is prohibited.

What is on the GCPN exam?
GIAC publishes twelve exam certification objectives for GCPN, without weightings. Read together, they cover a full cloud engagement: mapping the target, discovering services and data, attacking identities and applications, working through containers and pipelines, and red team operations with attack obfuscation.
Note how much of the list is identity- and application-driven. Password attacks, AWS authentication and web application attacks sit beside the infrastructure objectives, so network penetration testing experience alone does not cover the list.
- Cloud Penetration Testing Fundamentals
- Cloud CLI and Application Mapping
- Discovering Cloud Services and Data
- AWS Authentication and Cloud Services
- Microsoft Azure Cloud Services and Attacks
- Azure Functions and Windows Containers
- Containers and Kubernetes Structure
- Cloud Native Applications and CI/CD Pipelines
- Password Attacks on Cloud Environments
- Web Application Attacks
- Redirection and Attack Obfuscation
- Red Team Penetration Testing of Cloud Environments

GCPN prerequisites
GIAC lists no prerequisites or eligibility requirements for GCPN. It does note that practical work experience can help ensure you have mastered the skills needed for certification.
The affiliated SANS course gives a clearer picture of the expected starting point: basic familiarity with Linux bash, with the Azure and AWS command-line tools, with networking and TCP/IP, and a sense of how port pivots work using Netcat and SSH.

GCPN training: SANS SEC588
The training GIAC names for GCPN is SANS SEC588: Cloud Penetration Testing. It runs six days instructor-led or 36 hours self-paced, carries 36 CPEs, and is offered in person, virtually or self-paced. The self-paced OnDemand version is listed at $8,780 USD with four months of access.
The course is not required. If you prepare independently, work through the twelve objectives in a lab of your own on AWS and Azure, and build a printed index of your notes: GIAC’s open-book format favours candidates who can find a command or concept in seconds.

How long is the GCPN certification valid?
To keep GCPN active you collect 36 credits over four years. GIAC lists the certification renewal fee at $499, with additional renewals within two years of a full-price renewal at $249.

GCPN vs GPEN
GPEN, the GIAC Penetration Tester certification, validates the ability to properly conduct a penetration test using effective techniques and methodologies. GCPN takes that discipline into the cloud: AWS, Azure, Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines.
The exams differ in size as well as scope. GPEN has 82 questions in 3 hours with a 73% passing score for versions released on or after 12 July 2025; GCPN has 75 questions in 2 hours and a 70% passing score. GPEN is not a prerequisite for GCPN.

GCPN practice questions and exam dumps
GIAC sells an official GCPN practice exam for $399. GIAC states that practice exams simulate the real test, that the practice question bank is limited, and that practice exams never include actual exam questions.
Certsqill’s GCPN practice questions are expert-developed and follow GIAC’s twelve objectives. Every question comes with an explanation for every answer option, and your results build a readiness score per domain — useful on an exam where the Azure, Kubernetes and web application objectives demand quite different knowledge.
Avoid exam dumps. GIAC’s Exam Integrity Policy treats any use of or reference to exam dump sites containing actual or possible GIAC questions as a violation, with sanctions up to revocation of previously issued certifications and bans from future GIAC programmes.
