GIAC GRID certification: exam, cost and passing score
GRID, the GIAC Response and Industrial Defense certification, validates active defense, detection and incident response for industrial control system (ICS) networks. The exam has 75 questions in 2 hours with a minimum passing score of 74%, proctored remotely through ProctorU or onsite at Pearson VUE. A certification attempt costs $999 (USD, before tax), and the GRID cert stays active for four years when you collect 36 CPEs or retake the exam.

What is the GIAC GRID certification?
GRID stands for GIAC Response and Industrial Defense. GIAC states that it validates a practitioner’s command of Active Defense strategies made for protecting industrial control system (ICS) networks and systems, including how ICS-specific attacks inform mitigation and how to apply network security monitoring, digital forensics and incident response in those environments.
It is a defender’s certification rather than an engineering one. GIAC lists ICS incident response team leads and members, ICS and operational technology security staff, IT security professionals, SOC team leads and analysts, ICS red teamers and penetration testers, and active defenders as the people GRID is for.
GRID sits in GIAC’s Industrial Control Systems focus area next to two other credentials: GICSP, the Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional, and GCIP, the GIAC Critical Infrastructure Protection certification.

How much does the GIAC GRID certification cost?
GIAC’s pricing table lists GRID at $999 for a certification attempt. The other GRID line items are a $899 exam retake, a $479 attempt extension, a $399 practice exam and a $499 certification renewal. GIAC states that all prices are in USD and exclude applicable sales tax.
GIAC also notes that affiliate pricing applies when you register for an attempt through an affiliate bundle option, for example together with the SANS course named on the GRID page. The figure that counts is the one in your cart at registration.
Two of those costs are easy to forget when budgeting. The attempt window is limited to 120 days, so an extension is a real cost if you start too early, and a failed attempt means paying for a retake rather than rebooking for free.

GRID exam format: questions, time limit and delivery
GIAC lists the GRID exam as one proctored exam with 75 questions and a time limit of 2 hours. That leaves a little over a minute and a half per question, which matters in an open-book exam where looking things up costs time.
All GIAC certification exams are web-based and must be proctored. You can choose remote proctoring through ProctorU or onsite proctoring at a Pearson VUE test center. Once your application is approved and the attempt is activated in your GIAC account, you have 120 days to complete it.
GIAC advises checking your GIAC account for the exam format that applies to your specific attempt, since details can differ between exam versions.

GRID passing score
The GRID minimum passing score is 74%, as published on GIAC’s certification page. Unlike many vendors, GIAC states the number openly, so you have a concrete target for practice.
Treat 74% as a floor rather than a goal. With 75 questions, that leaves room for roughly a quarter of the exam to go wrong, but the objectives span seven distinct areas, and a weak area such as forensics or threat intelligence can use up that margin quickly.

GRID exam objectives
GIAC publishes seven certification objectives for GRID, each framed for an ICS environment. Together they cover the full defensive cycle, from knowing which assets you have to responding when an incident hits:
- Active Defense in an ICS environment — the concept and what well-known ICS attacks reveal today
- Detection in an ICS environment — tools and techniques to analyse network security evidence
- Incident Response in an ICS environment — digital forensics and incident response and why ICS makes it harder
- Monitoring in an ICS environment — network monitoring specific to ICS protocols and environments
- Threat Hunting and Analysis in an ICS environment
- Threat Intelligence in an ICS environment — core concepts and how they apply to ICS
- Visibility and Asset Awareness in an ICS environment — asset discovery and network visibility

How to read the GRID objectives
GIAC groups the areas covered into three themes: active defense concepts and detection; discovery, monitoring, ICS-focused digital forensics and incident response; and malware analysis, threat analysis and threat intelligence fundamentals. Read together with the seven objectives, the emphasis is clearly on what happens after an attacker is already inside an OT network.
What makes the material different from general IT security is the environment. Industrial protocols, safety constraints and systems that cannot simply be rebooted or reimaged change how you monitor, collect evidence and contain an incident. Expect questions that test whether you would apply an IT habit that is wrong in a plant.

Is the GRID exam open book?
Yes. GIAC states that its exams are open book and that all printed books, notes and study guides are allowed, but no digital items. Check the proctoring rules for your chosen delivery option when you book, since remote and onsite sessions are run by different proctoring partners.
GIAC itself calls building an index an essential part of studying: a printed, ordered reference that lets you find a topic in seconds. With 75 questions in two hours, an open book only helps if you rarely need to open it, so the index is a backup, not a substitute for knowing the material.

GRID prerequisites and official training
GIAC lists no formal prerequisites for GRID. Anyone can register for a certification attempt.
The affiliate training named on the GRID page is the SANS course ICS Visibility, Detection, and Response, offered in several formats including live and OnDemand. Taking it is not required. GIAC also sells GRID practice exams and states that practice exams never include actual exam questions.

How long is the GRID cert valid and how do you renew it?
A GIAC certification stays active for four years at a time. To renew, GIAC asks you to either collect 36 CPEs over those four years or renew by retaking the exam, then pay the renewal fee, after which the certification is active for four more years.
For GRID the renewal fee is $499, and GIAC notes that additional renewals within two years of paying a full-price renewal cost $249. If you hold several GIAC certifications, renewing them close together therefore costs less.

GRID vs GICSP and GCIP
All three sit in GIAC’s Industrial Control Systems focus area. GICSP is the broad one: GIAC positions it as interdisciplinary assurance across IT and OT environments. GCIP focuses on protecting power and critical infrastructure environments, bridging compliance with security practice.
GRID is the response-and-defense credential of the three. If your job is monitoring OT networks, hunting threats or leading incident response in an industrial setting, GRID describes that work most directly.

GRID exam dumps
GIAC’s Exam Integrity Policy explicitly prohibits any use of or reference to exam dump sites that contain actual or possible GIAC questions or answers, and requires candidates not to share or accept knowledge of test content. Consequences listed include revocation of previously issued GIAC certifications and bans from future GIAC certifications.
Beyond the risk, dumps do not fit an open-book exam built on scenarios: what helps is understanding the material well enough to recognise it quickly, plus a good index.

GRID practice questions
Certsqill’s GRID practice questions are expert-developed and come with an explanation for every answer option, so you learn why a detection or response step is right in an ICS environment and why the IT-style alternative is not.
Your results build a readiness score per exam domain, from asset visibility through monitoring and detection to incident response and threat intelligence, so you can see whether you clear the 74% line in every area before you spend $999 on an attempt. Every plan comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
