What is ECBA certification?
ECBA stands for Entry Certificate in Business Analysis. It is issued by IIBA, which presents it as the first step for aspiring business analysis professionals — the entry point below CCBA and CBAP.
The full IIBA ECBA certification name — Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) — says what it is: an entry credential. You do not need years of documented work; the fee table shows no application step at all, and the May 2026 ECBA Handbook lists no experience requirement. That makes the ECBA certification for business analyst beginners, career changers and students who want to show they know the foundations.
IIBA has rebuilt the exam. The new ECBA exam, roadmap and learning journey are in English; translated versions of the previous exam remain available in Chinese, French, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese.

ECBA certification cost
IIBA prices the ECBA as a package: US$395 or less, and that figure includes IIBA membership, the ECBA exam, the practice exam and the learning journey. Students get a reduced rate, starting at US$315 or less depending on the region. IIBA states that all amounts are in US dollars and subject to change.
The fee table lists no application fee for ECBA (“Not Required”) and no recertification fee. A rewrite, if you need one, costs US$95 for members or US$250 for non-members; the Handbook confirms that rewrite fees are not included in the initial exam fee.
So the ECBA certification cost for a first-time pass is the US$395 package, at most. Training courses you choose to buy are a separate expense set by whoever runs them.
- ECBA package (membership, exam, practice exam, learning journey): US$395 or less
- Student rate: from US$315 or less, depending on region
- Application fee: not required
- Exam rewrite: US$95 members, US$250 non-members
- Recertification: not required

ECBA requirements: is there an eligibility test?
There is no eligibility review for ECBA. IIBA’s fee table marks the application as not required, and the May 2026 ECBA Handbook states no professional development or work-experience requirement. You need an IIBA account, you must read the Handbook in full, and you agree to IIBA’s Code of Ethical Conduct and Professional Standards.
After payment you have six months to schedule and take the exam. IIBA’s roadmap runs in seven steps: before you start, purchase the exam, study and prepare, set up for the remote exam, schedule it, exam day, and after certification — your badge and ECBA certificate.

ECBA exam format
The ECBA exam has 50 situation-based and standard multiple-choice questions and lasts 75 minutes — a minute and a half per question. Situation-based items describe a short workplace scenario and ask what a business analyst should do, so you need to apply concepts, not just recall definitions.
It is taken online with a remote proctor through PSI; IIBA does not list a test-centre option for ECBA. The new exam is in English only.
IIBA does not publish an ECBA passing score. The Handbook says only that you see a pass or fail result on screen, and IIBA emails confirmation within 48 hours. A percentage quoted elsewhere does not come from IIBA.

What is on the ECBA exam? The syllabus
IIBA’s ECBA Exam Blueprint V1.1 is the syllabus. Its content comes from The Business Analysis Standard and the BABOK Guide, and it divides the exam into nine areas. One fifth of the exam is about understanding business analysis itself, and six core concepts — change, need, solution, stakeholder, value and context — carry 10% each.
- Understanding Business Analysis — 20%
- Mindset for Effective Business Analysis — 14%
- Implementing Business Analysis — 6%
- Change — 10%
- Need — 10%
- Solution — 10%
- Stakeholder — 10%
- Value — 10%
- Context — 10%

ECBA practice test and exam prep
The ECBA package includes IIBA’s own ECBA practice exam at no additional cost. It has 50 questions timed at 75 minutes, matching the content, format and competency level of the real exam, and you can take it twice within your six-month purchase term. Use one attempt early to find weak areas and save the second for the week before your booking.
IIBA also publishes free ECBA sample questions as a PDF on its ECBA page. They are few, but they show the style of situation-based items. If you look for more ECBA practice tests or ECBA practice exams, check that they follow the nine blueprint areas and the 50-question, 75-minute format.
ECBA exam questions and ECBA test questions copied from the live exam are a different matter. IIBA’s Code of Ethical Conduct requires candidates to keep the contents of the ECBA exam — including questions, scenarios and cases — confidential and calls disclosure strictly prohibited. Violations can lead to rejection of the registration, denial to sit the exam and revocation. An exam dump puts the certificate at risk.

ECBA training and study options
ECBA training is optional: there is no required number of training hours. IIBA’s own learning journey is included in the package, and IIBA points to its list of IIBA Exam Prep Providers for courses. IIBA ECBA certification training from such a provider can help if you prefer a structured course, but check that it covers the nine blueprint areas before you pay.
Whichever ECBA certification training you choose, study The Business Analysis Standard and the BABOK Guide, because the blueprint names them as the source of the exam content.

ECBA vs CCBA
ECBA and CCBA are both IIBA credentials, but only ECBA is open without experience. CCBA, the Certification of Capability in Business Analysis, requires two to three years of work in the last seven (3,750 hours) and 21 professional development hours, and its exam has 130 scenario-based questions in 180 minutes. The CCBA exam fee is US$405, or US$250 for members, plus a US$145 application fee.
IIBA lists ECBA holders among the people CCBA is aimed at, so the ECBA business analyst certification is a natural first step if you plan to build towards CCBA once you have the hours.

Is ECBA certification worth it?
IIBA publishes no salary figures for ECBA. Its ECBA page says only that certified professionals often report stronger outcomes when discussing compensation and role expectations, without data — read that as IIBA’s own claim.
Whether ECBA is worth it depends on where you are. For a newcomer the ECBA cert is a low-cost, experience-free way to show business analysis foundations, with no recertification fee; for someone who already meets the CCBA or CBAP experience bar, going straight to those is usually the stronger signal.

ECBA practice questions
