What is the Istio Certified Associate?

The Istio Certified Associate, or ICA, is a certification offered by the Linux Foundation together with the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). CNCF says the exam demonstrates a solid understanding of Istio principles, terminology and best practices, and calls it a pre-professional certification designed for engineers, CI/CD practitioners and anyone with a special interest in Istio.

Istio is the open source service mesh for Kubernetes: it handles traffic routing, mutual TLS and authorization between services, and gives you visibility into how they talk to each other. The ICA checks that you can install, configure, secure and troubleshoot it on a real cluster.

The Linux Foundation rates the exam at intermediate level, even though the name says associate. That matches the format: the ICA is a hands-on exam, not a vocabulary test.

The ICA exam has changed: new curriculum

The Linux Foundation’s ICA page carries a notice that the ICA exam has changed and that all exams are now tested on the new curriculum. The current domains include installing Istio in sidecar or ambient mode and canary or in-place upgrades, alongside traffic management, security and troubleshooting.

If you studied from material written for an earlier version of the exam, compare it with the current domain list below before you book. In particular, check that it covers ambient mode and canary and in-place upgrades, which the current list names explicitly.

How much does the Istio Certified Associate exam cost?

The ICA exam costs $250. CNCF states that this includes one free retake, so if you fail the first attempt you can try again without paying a second time.

The Linux Foundation also offers two bundles: the exam with its Istio Service Mesh Essentials course (LFS245) for $299, and the exam with a THRIVE-ONE annual subscription to its e-learning catalogue for $495.

After purchase you have 12 months of exam eligibility in which to schedule and sit the exam, including the retake.

ICA exam format

According to the Linux Foundation’s exam instructions, the ICA consists of 15 to 20 performance-based tasks that you solve on the Linux command line, and you have 2 hours to complete them. The environment currently runs Istio v1.29. CNCF describes the exam the same way, as a set of performance-based problems solved in a command line; the Linux Foundation’s product page labels it performance-based and multiple-choice, so expect hands-on work as the core.

The exam is online and proctored on PSI’s Bridge platform with the PSI Secure Browser. Tasks are available in English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese, and no other applications or browser windows may be open apart from the exam.

Exams are scored automatically, and the Linux Foundation sends the score report by email within 24 hours of completion.

What is the ICA passing score?

The Linux Foundation’s ICA FAQ states that a score of 68% or above must be earned to pass. Because tasks are checked on the cluster, partial configuration does not help much: a VirtualService that routes almost correctly still sends traffic to the wrong place.

With 15 to 20 tasks in 120 minutes, you have six to eight minutes per task on average. Skip a task that stalls you and come back to it, rather than letting one stubborn problem eat the time for three others.

What is on the Istio Certified Associate exam?

The Linux Foundation publishes four domains with fixed weights, and CNCF has open-sourced the curriculum the exam is built on. Traffic management is the largest domain by far at 35%, so routing, traffic shifting, resilience features and fault injection deserve the most practice time.

  • Installation, Upgrade & Configuration — 20%: installing Istio with istioctl or Helm, sidecar or ambient mode, customising the installation, canary and in-place upgrades
  • Traffic Management — 35%: ingress and egress, routing within the mesh, destination rules, traffic shifting, connecting to external workloads, circuit breaking, failover, outlier detection, timeouts, retries, fault injection
  • Securing Workloads — 25%: authorization, authentication with mTLS and JWT, securing edge traffic with TLS
  • Troubleshooting — 20%: troubleshooting configuration, the mesh control plane and the mesh data plane

Istio certification prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for the ICA. You do not need a Kubernetes certification first, and the Linux Foundation lists no experience requirement.

In practice, every task happens on Kubernetes, so you should already be at home with kubectl, namespaces, deployments and services. If those still slow you down, they will cost you time that the Istio tasks need.

How long is the ICA certification valid?

ICA certifications are valid for 2 years. The Linux Foundation’s FAQ states that you renew by retaking and passing the exam, and that renewal must be completed before the expiration date.

Because the Linux Foundation can change the curriculum, as it has now, plan a renewal attempt as a fresh exam on whatever version is current at the time, not as a repeat of the one you passed.

Official ICA training and exam rules

The Linux Foundation’s own course for this certification is Istio Service Mesh Essentials (LFS245), sold together with the exam for $299. The open-sourced CNCF curriculum is the free reference for scope, and the Istio documentation covers every feature the domains name.

On shortcuts: the Linux Foundation’s certification agreement prohibits disclosing, publishing or transmitting any exam content and names disseminating actual exam content, including web postings, as misconduct. Sanctions include revoking any certifications you have earned and barring you from future Linux Foundation exams. Leaked answers are of little use on a hands-on exam anyway, because the result is read from the cluster you configured.

Istio Certified Associate practice questions

Certsqill’s ICA practice questions are expert-developed and follow the four official domains of the current curriculum. Every answer option comes with an explanation, and your readiness score is broken down per domain, so you can see whether traffic management — the 35% domain — is holding you back.

For a hands-on exam, use them alongside lab work: they check that you know which Istio resource and field a task needs before you start writing YAML. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
