What is the MongoDB Associate Data Modeler certification?

The MongoDB Associate Data Modeler is a MongoDB certification that, in MongoDB’s words, attests to your competency in designing, building and evolving effective data models in MongoDB, and in incorporating data governance into your work. MongoDB introduced it in March 2024 alongside a new free learning path for data modeling.

It is a role-based credential rather than a product tour. Where a developer certification asks whether you can write queries and use a driver, the data modeler cert asks whether you can decide what a document should look like in the first place: which entities belong together, which should be referenced, and how the schema should change as an application grows.

MongoDB draws the line between its skill badges and its certifications clearly. Skill badges recognise specific, focused skills as you learn; certification goes further by validating broader knowledge and the ability to apply those skills to a defined job role. For this certification, that role is the person responsible for the data model.

Who is the MongoDB data modeler certification for?

MongoDB states that the certification is designed for experienced users. Candidates should have some familiarity with JSON and with the MongoDB Query API, including aggregations and data modeling on MongoDB, and should understand the trade-offs between simplicity and performance in data modeling techniques.

That last point is the real filter. Plenty of developers can store a document; fewer can explain why a design that is easy to write today becomes slow to read at scale, or why the fastest read pattern makes updates harder. If you have mostly worked with relational schemas, expect to spend time unlearning normalisation as the default answer.

MongoDB does not describe a formal prerequisite certification on the pages checked for this article. In practice, the stated experience — JSON, the Query API and aggregations — is the baseline you should already have before starting on modeling.

What is on the MongoDB Associate Data Modeler exam?

MongoDB describes the content through its Data Modeling learning path, which prepares you for the certification exam. According to MongoDB, you learn how to identify entities and workloads, map relationships, and decide when to embed or reference them; you also learn schema design patterns, how to recognise and address MongoDB anti-patterns, and the basics of schema lifecycle management.

In 2026 MongoDB aligned the path with skill badges. For the Data Modeler path, the badges focus on data modeling, schema patterns and schema optimization, which sums up the focus of the path. MongoDB does not publish a percentage per topic on the pages that could be checked for this article.

MongoDB data modeler exam format, length and passing score

Before you book, confirm five things on MongoDB University: the price after any discount, the number of questions and the time limit, how the exam is proctored, what happens if you fail and how long you must wait to retake, and whether the certification expires. Write the answers down; they decide how you plan your preparation and your budget.

One general point holds regardless of the format: an exam built on modeling trade-offs rarely rewards memorised definitions. Expect questions that describe a workload and ask which design fits it best.

How to study for the MongoDB Associate Data Modeler exam

Start with MongoDB’s own material: the Data Modeling learning path and the Associate Data Modeler Exam Study Guide listed on MongoDB University. The study guide is the document that defines the exam scope, so check every topic you study against it.

Then practise the decisions, not the vocabulary. Take a small application — an online shop, a booking system, a content platform — and model it twice: once optimised for the most frequent read, once optimised for writes. Write down what each design costs. That habit maps directly onto the simplicity-versus-performance trade-offs MongoDB names in the candidate profile.

Finally, revisit anti-patterns deliberately. It is easier to recognise a bad schema in a question when you have built one yourself and watched it struggle.

Associate Data Modeler vs Associate DBA vs Atlas Administrator

MongoDB currently runs three certification tracks with skill-badge learning paths: Associate Data Modeler, Database Administrator and Atlas Administrator. They test different jobs.

The Data Modeler path focuses on data modeling, schema patterns and schema optimization — the shape of the data. The Database Administrator path covers querying, indexing, monitoring, performance tuning, security and sharding — running the database. The Atlas Administrator path covers database administration plus security, networking and data resiliency specific to Atlas environments — operating MongoDB’s managed cloud service.

If your daily work is designing collections and documents for applications, the data modeler cert is the closest fit. If you are responsible for keeping deployments healthy, one of the administrator tracks matches better.
