RHCE certification: the EX294 exam and Red Hat’s 2026 changes
The RHCE certification was restructured on 11 May 2026: Red Hat now issues two RHCE credentials, and the EX294 route earns “Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible” — RHCSA (EX200) plus EX294, which is now titled “Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible”. EX294 is a hands-on exam based on RHEL 9; certifications stay current for 3 years.

What is the RHCE certification?
RHCE stands for Red Hat Certified Engineer. It is the engineer-level credential on Red Hat’s Linux path, above the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA). On the EX294 route it certifies, in Red Hat’s words, the ability to use the core components of Red Hat Ansible to automate standard system tasks.
Red Hat’s rule for the engineer level is that you must successfully earn both the foundational credential and its corresponding advanced credential within the same specialization. For the Ansible specialization, the foundational credential is the RHCSA (exam EX200) and the advanced one comes from exam EX294.
Red Hat still uses the RHCE abbreviation — for example, it describes the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) credential as a step towards its architect level — but the full titles now name a specialization, as the next section explains.

What changed for RHCE in 2026?
Red Hat’s FAQ states that as of 11 May 2026, Red Hat Certification has reorganized exams into a structured, five-level path: Technologist, Administrator/Developer, Engineer, Specialist and Architect, across specializations including Enterprise Linux and Ansible.
For RHCE this has three practical effects. There are now two RHCE titles: Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible (EX200 plus EX294) and Red Hat Certified Engineer in Enterprise Linux (EX200 plus EX342, the advanced system administrator exam in Enterprise Linux). EX294 itself now carries the title Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible exam. And passing EX294 without an RHCSA, which in Red Hat’s words previously yielded no credential, now grants a standalone certification: Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible.
What did not change: Red Hat states that existing certifications are grandfathered and mapped into the new framework, and that there are no changes to the exam content, exam objectives, the training it recommends or the price of its exams. If you were already preparing for EX294, your study plan stays the same.

How much does the RHCE certification cost?
Red Hat does not show a price on the EX294 exam page until you choose a location, so this page states no figure. Red Hat’s FAQ confirms that exam prices were not changed by the 2026 framework.
Count two exams when you budget: the RHCE in Ansible requires the RHCSA (EX200) as well as EX294. If you already hold the RHCSA, only EX294 remains.
Each exam comes with a safety net. Red Hat states that candidates unsuccessful on their first individual exam attempt are eligible for a free exam retake, with a maximum of one free retake per exam.

RHCE exam format and passing score
EX294 is, in Red Hat’s words, a hands-on, practical exam that requires you to use Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform playbooks. You do not answer questions; you write automation, and your work is evaluated by applying the playbooks you created during the exam to freshly installed systems. A playbook that only worked on the machine you tested it on will not score.
Internet access is not provided, and you may not bring any hard-copy or electronic documentation. The exam tests system administration skills for those using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. Red Hat’s FAQ states that nearly any Red Hat exam can be taken remotely from home or office, using the same performance-based testing as other delivery methods. Red Hat does not state the exam duration or the number of tasks on the EX294 page.
Red Hat does not publish a passing score for EX294 on the exam page or in its certification FAQ. Scores are usually reported within 3 U.S. business days; the FAQ states that results include a Pass/Fail status and an objective-based score breakdown, and the exam page adds that Red Hat does not report performance on individual items.
Without a published cut score, the practical bar is reproducibility: aim for playbooks that are idempotent, use the correct inventory and variables, and run cleanly from start to finish on a system you have not touched. If you need the free retake, the objective-based breakdown shows which areas to fix first.

What is on the RHCE exam?
Red Hat lists the EX294 objectives in groups and publishes no percentage weighting. Note the first line: the exam expects you to be able to perform all tasks expected of an RHCSA — the Ansible objectives sit on top of that, they do not replace it.
Red Hat states that the objectives are based on the most recent Red Hat product version available, so re-check the list on the exam page shortly before you book.
- Be able to perform all tasks expected of a Red Hat Certified System Administrator
- Understand core components of Ansible
- Configure Ansible
- Configure Ansible managed nodes
- Run playbooks
- Perform basic source control operations using Git
- Be familiar with Visual Studio Code (VS Code)
- Create Ansible plays and playbooks
- Use roles and Ansible Content Collections
- Automate standard RHCSA tasks using Ansible modules
- Manage content

RHCE prerequisites
To hold the Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible credential, you need both the RHCSA and EX294. Red Hat’s RHCE in Ansible page puts it directly: if you are not yet an RHCSA, you can start by getting certified.
For sitting EX294 itself, Red Hat lists the preparation it expects: RH124 and RH134 (or RH199), or comparable Red Hat Enterprise Linux administration experience; AU294 or comparable work experience; and a review of the RHCSA (EX200) objectives alongside the EX294 objectives.
Since 11 May 2026 you can take EX294 before holding the RHCSA and still receive a credential for it — the standalone Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible. The RHCE title itself still requires both.
Source: Red Hat — Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible. Checked 8 October 2026.
How long is the RHCE valid?
Red Hat states that certifications are current for 3 years from the date earned and must be renewed before they expire.
The renewal routes in Red Hat’s FAQ are: pass the exam associated with your highest-level certification; earn another certification at the same level as your highest one; or earn a higher-level certification, which renews all your lower-level ones.
Red Hat adds a specific rule for this credential: candidates who earn the Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible automatically extend the currency of any other RHCE credentials they hold, and of credentials below RHCE.

RHCE study materials and training
Red Hat’s exam page points to AU294, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Automation with Ansible, for the Ansible part, and to RH124 and RH134 (or the RHCSA Rapid Track course, RH199) for the RHCSA-level skills the exam also expects.
The objectives list on the EX294 exam page is the authoritative scope. Because Red Hat bases the objectives on the most recent product version, material written for an older version of the exam can be out of date — check the RHEL and Ansible versions it targets.
The objectives also mention basic Git operations and familiarity with Visual Studio Code, so practise in that toolset rather than only in a plain shell.

RHCE vs RHCSA
RHCSA is the foundation and RHCE the engineer level on top of it. RHCSA (EX200) is a hands-on administration exam based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10; EX294 is a hands-on automation exam that expects all RHCSA skills and then tests whether you can automate them with Ansible on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.
Both certifications are current for 3 years, both come with one free retake, and Red Hat publishes no passing score for either. Earning the RHCE in Ansible counts as a higher-level certification, so under Red Hat’s renewal rules it also renews the RHCSA beneath it.

RHCE practice questions
EX294 is scored by running the playbooks you write, so knowledge questions complement hands-on practice with Ansible and cannot replace it. They are useful for checking the concepts — module behaviour, variable precedence, how roles and collections are structured — before you spend lab time writing and debugging playbooks.
Certsqill’s RHCE practice questions explain each option and are grouped by Red Hat’s published EX294 objectives.

RHCSA and RHCE exam questions: what you actually face
People search for RHCSA RHCE exam questions expecting a question paper. There is none. Both exams are performance-based: EX200 for the RHCSA and EX294 for the RHCE route ask you to configure live systems. On EX294 your Ansible playbooks are applied to freshly installed systems, and that result is what Red Hat scores.
So the RHCE test is really a list of tasks, and the RHCE objectives on the EX294 page tell you which kinds of task to expect: configuring Ansible and managed nodes, running and writing playbooks, using roles and Ansible Content Collections, basic Git operations, working in VS Code, and automating standard RHCSA tasks with Ansible modules.

RHCE objectives: the official syllabus
Red Hat does not call it a syllabus, but the objectives list on the EX294 page is exactly that, and it is the only authoritative one. Red Hat states that the objectives are based on the most recent product version available, so read the live page shortly before you book instead of trusting an older copy.
The first objective is easy to underestimate: you must be able to perform all tasks expected of a Red Hat Certified System Administrator. Any RHCE study plan that skips RHCSA-level administration leaves a gap the exam will find.

Building an RHCE study guide around the objectives
A good RHCE study guide follows the EX294 objectives one by one and makes you build each thing on a lab machine. Red Hat’s own recommended preparation is AU294, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Automation with Ansible, plus RH124 and RH134 (or RH199) for the RHCSA-level skills — attendance is recommended, not required.
Check the versions a study guide targets. EX294 tests system administration skills for those using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform; material written around older releases can teach module names and defaults that no longer match.

RHCE practice exam: how to rehearse a hands-on test
The most realistic RHCE practice exam is one you build yourself: a fresh set of virtual machines, a task list drawn from the objectives, a time limit, and no internet — Red Hat provides no internet access in the exam and allows no hard-copy or electronic documentation.
Then grade yourself the way Red Hat does: wipe the managed nodes, run your playbooks against clean systems and see what actually ends up configured. A playbook that only worked because of something you did by hand earlier will fail that RHCE practice test, exactly as it would in the exam.
Knowledge questions help with the concepts — variable precedence, module behaviour, how roles are structured — but they complement lab work rather than replace it. Certsqill’s RHCE practice questions are expert-developed, and every question explains each answer option.

RHCE exam fee and the RHCSA
Red Hat does not print the RHCE exam fee on the EX294 page; the price appears after you choose a location. Its FAQ confirms that the 2026 framework did not change exam prices.
For the full credential, budget for the RHCSA and RHCE exam fee together: Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible requires both EX200 and EX294. If you already hold the RHCSA, only EX294 remains. Red Hat states that candidates who are unsuccessful on their first attempt at an exam are eligible for one free retake of that exam; from a third attempt on, you pay again.
Source: Red Hat — Training and certification FAQ. Checked 9 October 2026.
Do you need an RHCE boot camp?
No. Red Hat requires no course for EX294 — its training is recommended, and the FAQ puts it this way: “Training builds your skills, but certification validates them through hands-on, performance-based testing.” The formal requirement for the RHCE in Ansible is passing both the RHCSA (EX200) and EX294.
If you consider an RHCE bootcamp or another intensive boot camp format, check that it teaches to the current EX294 objectives on RHEL 9, gives you a lab you can reset and repeat, covers RHCSA-level tasks as well as Ansible, and says clearly whether an exam attempt is included.

RHCE exam dumps and Red Hat’s exam rules
RHCE exam dumps make even less sense than dumps for multiple-choice exams. EX294 is scored by applying your playbooks to fresh systems, so a memorised answer that does not run gives you nothing.
There is also the rule side. Red Hat’s training policies state that individual exams are subject to the Red Hat Exam Privacy and Confidentiality Agreement, and list nullification of exam results and revocation of pass status and certification among the penalties for violations reported to the certification team. An RHCE exam dump of unknown origin is not worth that risk — and you cannot check whether it is even correct.

RHCE salary and whether RHCE is worth it
Red Hat publishes no RHCE salary data, and this page quotes none. Figures you see elsewhere come from job boards and surveys with their own methods.
Whether the RHCE is worth it is better judged on what Red Hat does publish: a hands-on exam, so passing shows you can actually automate administration with Ansible; certifications current for 3 years; one free retake per exam; and the rule that earning the RHCE in Ansible also extends the currency of your other RHCE credentials and those below it.
