Is the TensorFlow Developer Certificate discontinued?
The exam is closed. TensorFlow’s certificate page states: “While we evaluate the next step in our certificate program, we have closed the TensorFlow Certificate exam.” There is no booking link, no fee and no exam description left on the page.
TensorFlow does not use the word “discontinued” and does not give a date for when the exam closed or whether it will reopen. What can be stated is the current position: as of 8 October 2026 you cannot take the TensorFlow Developer Certificate exam, and TensorFlow has not announced a successor.
If you have seen a site offering to sell you a TensorFlow certificate exam, voucher or booking today, it is not describing anything TensorFlow currently offers.

What is the TensorFlow developer certification?
The TensorFlow Developer Certificate was TensorFlow’s own credential for developers. TensorFlow’s website still describes the aim in its page description: to demonstrate your level of proficiency in using TensorFlow to solve deep learning and ML problems by passing the TensorFlow Certificate program.
It was a framework credential rather than a cloud credential: it was tied to the TensorFlow library itself, not to a cloud platform. That is the main thing that separates it from the Google Cloud machine-learning certification discussed further down.
Today the page exists mainly for people who already hold the certificate — it congratulates everyone who passed and keeps the Certificate Network online, where developers who passed the exam can be found.

How much does the TensorFlow developer certification cost?
Nothing can currently be bought. With the exam closed, TensorFlow lists no exam fee and no way to purchase an attempt.
Earlier prices circulate on third-party sites, but TensorFlow no longer publishes one, and this page will not repeat a price that the issuer does not state — especially for an exam that cannot be booked.

TensorFlow Developer Certificate exam format and passing score
TensorFlow no longer publishes the exam format: the certificate page gives no number of questions or tasks, no duration, no delivery method and no passing score. Descriptions of the old exam format that you find elsewhere are not confirmed by the current official page.
For anyone still planning around this certificate, that is the practical point. There is no current exam whose format you could prepare for; if TensorFlow reopens the programme, the format and scoring it publishes then are the ones that will count.

What was on the TensorFlow exam, and were there prerequisites?
The current certificate page publishes neither a skills checklist nor any eligibility requirement. TensorFlow’s candidate handbook, which used to set this out, could not be retrieved from TensorFlow’s website on 8 October 2026, so this page does not list exam topics or prerequisites from memory.
What remains on TensorFlow’s website is its general learning material, built around the same goal the certificate described — using TensorFlow for deep learning and ML problems. That material is covered in the study section below.

How long is the TensorFlow Developer Certificate valid?
TensorFlow states that credentials are valid for three years from the date you passed the exam. That rule still applies to certificates already earned, even though no new ones are being issued.
Because the exam is closed, there is currently no way to renew by retaking it. A certificate that reaches the end of its three years therefore expires unless TensorFlow publishes a new route. If your certificate is close to that date, the honest wording on a CV is the pass date alongside the three-year validity.

TensorFlow study materials and training
TensorFlow’s own learning material is still published on TensorFlow’s website under “Introduction to TensorFlow”, organised into Tutorials, the Guide, and Learn ML. That is the official source for TensorFlow skills, whether or not a certificate exists to prove them.
If your goal was the certificate rather than the skills, there is nothing to prepare for at present. If your goal is the skills, these official pages remain the place to start, and they track the library as it is today.

TensorFlow Developer Certificate vs Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer
TensorFlow names no replacement for its certificate, and this page does not present any other credential as one. The Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification is simply the machine-learning certification that Google Cloud currently offers, and it differs in kind.
It is bookable today: two hours, 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, $200 plus tax. It is tied to Google Cloud services rather than to the TensorFlow library, and its exam guide states that it does not directly assess coding skills — it tests design and operational decisions for ML on Google Cloud. Anyone weighing it as a substitute should read its exam guide first rather than assume it covers the same ground.

Should you still prepare for the TensorFlow developer certification?
Not for the certificate itself. There is no exam to sit, no announced reopening date and no named successor, so time spent preparing specifically for the TensorFlow Developer Certificate has no exam to land on today.
If what you need is a machine-learning credential you can book now, look at what is actually open rather than waiting. Google Cloud’s Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam lists no prerequisites, recommends three or more years of industry experience including at least one year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud, is offered in English and Japanese, and — as a Google Cloud professional certification — is valid for two years under Google’s exam terms. It is a cloud-platform exam, not a TensorFlow exam, so decide on that basis.
If what you need is TensorFlow skill, the official tutorials and guide on TensorFlow’s website are free to use and do not depend on the certificate programme.
