What is the Google Professional Cloud Database Engineer certification?

It is Google Cloud’s professional-level certification for database specialists. Google describes the role as a database professional who designs, creates, manages and troubleshoots Google Cloud databases used by applications to store and retrieve data, and who translates business and technical requirements into scalable and cost-effective database solutions.

The exam is aimed at experienced practitioners. Google recommends five or more years of overall database and IT experience, including two years of hands-on work with Google Cloud database solutions. That puts it well above an associate-level cert: the questions assume you have already run production databases and made trade-offs between availability, cost and performance.

Google currently shows a notice on the certification page: the exam will soon be updated to reflect recent branding changes, and candidates should check the exam guide for the product names used on the exam.

How much does the Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam cost?

The registration fee is $200, plus tax where applicable. It is the same fee Google lists for the Professional Data Engineer exam.

When you certify, Google issues a 50% discount code for renewal, which you can find in your certification profile.

Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam format

The exam lasts 2 hours and contains 50-60 multiple choice and multiple select questions.

You can take it online with a remote proctor or onsite at a testing center. It is offered in English and Japanese. Google moved its exam delivery to Pearson in early 2026, with registration resuming for test dates from 2 March 2026, so older instructions that refer to the previous provider no longer apply.

At the end you see a provisional pass or fail result on screen. Google does not report a numerical score; candidates who fail can see a section-level breakdown in their exam history.

Passing score

Google Cloud does not publish a passing score for the Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam. Its certification FAQ says the exams are designed only to determine whether a candidate meets a minimum passing standard, and that numerical scores are withheld because they can easily be misinterpreted.

Any percentage quoted for this exam therefore does not come from Google. Prepare for even coverage of the four exam guide sections instead — the smallest section still carries about a fifth of the exam.

What is on the Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam?

Google’s exam guide splits the exam into four sections with approximate weightings. Design carries the largest share, and migration on its own is almost a quarter of the exam — this is not a pure operations test.

The sub-objectives show the depth: capacity and usage planning, high availability and disaster recovery options, how applications connect to the database, choosing appropriate database solutions on Google Cloud, connectivity and access management, monitoring and troubleshooting, backup and recovery design, cost and performance optimisation, automating common database tasks, and designing data migration and replication.

The guide is written in terms of decisions rather than product names. It asks you, for example, to differentiate between managed and unmanaged database services and to determine the right migration tools for databases hosted outside Google Cloud.

  • Design innovative, scalable, and highly available cloud database solutions — ~32%
  • Manage a solution that can span multiple database technologies — ~25%
  • Migrate data solutions — ~23%
  • Deploy scalable and highly available databases in Google Cloud — ~20%

Prerequisites and recommended experience

There are no formal prerequisites. You do not need an associate-level Google Cloud certification first.

Google’s recommended experience is five or more years of database and IT work, including two years hands-on with Google Cloud database solutions. It is a recommendation, not a gate — but the exam guide’s focus on design trade-offs, migration and recovery planning is hard to cover from study alone.

How long is the certification valid, and how do you renew it?

All Professional Google Cloud certifications are valid for two years from the date you certify. Renewal is by exam: the renewal window opens 60 days before your certification’s inactive date, and passing adds two years.

Miss the window and you still have a short grace period — Google allows renewal up to 30 days after the inactive date. After that, you take the standard exam at full price.

Retake policy

If you fail, you can retake the exam after 14 days. After a second failed attempt you must wait 60 days, and after a third, 365 days before a fourth attempt.

Google prohibits trying to get around these waiting periods, for example by registering under a different name; doing so results in a denied or revoked certification.

Professional Cloud Database Engineer vs Professional Data Engineer

The two are often confused. The Professional Cloud Database Engineer is about operational databases that applications read from and write to: designing them for availability, managing them, migrating them and deploying them. The Professional Data Engineer is about data pipelines — Google describes that role as collecting, transforming, storing and delivering data for diverse applications.

Both cost $200 and last 2 hours. The Data Engineer exam has 40-50 questions and recommends 3+ years of industry experience with 1+ year on Google Cloud; the Database Engineer exam has 50-60 questions and recommends 5+ years with 2 on Google Cloud databases.

Exam dumps and practice questions

Google publishes official sample questions for the exam on the certification page; they show the question style but are not a full practice exam.

Exam dumps are a breach of Google’s exam terms. The terms prohibit sharing exam content in any format, including content you memorise, and using unauthorized exam content shared by someone else, including content found online. Google may invalidate results, revoke any or all of your certifications and permanently bar you from the programme, without refunding fees.

Certsqill’s Professional Cloud Database Engineer practice questions are expert-developed and follow the four sections of the exam guide. Every question comes with an explanation for every answer option, and your results build a readiness score per domain, so you can see whether migration or management is the section still holding you back.
