Six Sigma certification: black belt requirements at a glance
ASQ’s six sigma black belt requirements come down to experience and evidence of project work. Both are checked before you can book the exam, which is what separates the CSSBB from a course certificate.
- Experience: three years on the job in one or more areas of the CSSBB Body of Knowledge
- Employment: the experience must come from a full-time, paid role
- Projects: one completed project with a signed affidavit, or two completed projects with signed affidavits
- Exam: pass the CSSBB exam with at least 550 of 750 points

Experience: what counts
ASQ asks for three years in one or more areas of the Body of Knowledge, so the experience does not have to cover every section — but it must have been earned in a full-time, paid role. If your experience comes from anything other than full-time, paid employment, clarify it with ASQ before you apply.

The project affidavit
The six sigma black belt certification requirements include real project work. ASQ states that the certification requires you to complete at least one Six Sigma project and submit a project affidavit, and its requirements list one completed project with a signed affidavit, or two completed projects with signed affidavits.
ASQ’s page does not spell out which candidates submit one project and which two; check the affidavit form in your application before you start documenting. Either way, a project you have only studied in a course does not replace one you have completed.

How to get Six Sigma Black Belt certification, step by step
If you are wondering how to get six sigma black belt certification from ASQ, the process has four steps:

- Schedule your exam with Prometric in the testing window you chose when you applied, then pass with 550 of 750 points.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt requirements
Lean six sigma black belt requirements depend entirely on who issues the certificate. ASQ’s credential — the CSSBB — uses the experience and project requirements above, and its handbook covers lean tools as part of the Body of Knowledge. A training provider’s “lean” black belt may require only its own course and exam, which is exactly why the requirements are worth comparing before you choose.
So how to get lean six sigma black belt certification that an employer can verify independently? Pick a certifying body that checks experience and project work and runs a proctored exam, as ASQ does.

Keeping the certification: recertification requirements
Meeting the requirements once is not the end. ASQ requires Black Belts to recertify every three years, either with 18 recertification units or by retaking the exam at the end of the period.
