What is a Six Sigma Black Belt certification?
A Six Sigma Black Belt certification shows that you can lead improvement projects using Six Sigma methods — the DMAIC model, statistics, team leadership — rather than only assist with them. ASQ describes the role in one line: a Black Belt “leads problem-solving projects” and “trains and coaches project teams”, while a Green Belt assists with data collection and analysis for Black Belt projects.
Not every black belt certificate is the same kind of credential, so the term on its own says little. This page covers the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) from ASQ, the American Society for Quality: a certification with published experience requirements, a proctored exam and a recertification cycle. ASQ says it is designed for professionals aiming to lead quality improvement initiatives.
So what is certified Six Sigma Black Belt status in ASQ’s terms? It is not a course certificate. You are only certified after ASQ has accepted your experience and project affidavit and you have passed its exam. A six sigma black belt certificate from a training course is a record of attendance; the CSSBB is a credential ASQ can verify.

Six Sigma Black Belt certification cost
ASQ lists the CSSBB exam fee at US$585, and ASQ members save US$100 on the initial examination fee. If you do not pass, the retake fee is US$385, available for two years from your previous attempt.
That fee is the full cost of the certification itself. Training is optional and priced separately: ASQ’s own self-paced CSSBB preparation course, for example, lists at US$924, or US$824 for members. Anything a training company calls a six sigma black belt certification program bundles its own course price with — or instead of — the ASQ exam, so check which of the two you are actually paying for.
Recertification is a later cost: every three years, either by journal (US$120 for members, US$160 for non-members) or by retaking the exam (US$485 for members, US$585 for non-members). ASQ states that all prices are subject to change without notice.

Six Sigma Black Belt exam format
The computer-based CSSBB exam is a one-part, 165-question exam offered in English only. 150 questions are scored and 15 are unscored. Exam time is 4 hours and 18 minutes within a four-and-a-half-hour appointment. In certain locations ASQ also offers a paper-and-pencil version in Mandarin: 150 questions in four hours.
The six sigma black belt test is delivered by Prometric. You can sit it at a Prometric test centre or, through Prometric ProProctor, with live remote proctoring — except in China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan, where ASQ states candidates must test at a centre.
The CSSBB is open book. Each candidate brings their own reference materials, and ASQ requires all of them, including notes, to be bound. That changes how you prepare: knowing where to find a formula quickly matters as much as having memorised it.

Six Sigma Black Belt passing score and results
ASQ publishes the pass mark: you need 550 points out of a possible 750 to be certified. On a computer-based exam you see your preliminary result on screen straight away; ASQ emails the official result within seven days.
ASQ does not publish pass rates on its results FAQ, so any figure quoted elsewhere is not from ASQ. With 150 scored questions across nine Body of Knowledge sections, the safe target is consistent strength everywhere rather than a guess at how many mistakes you can afford.

What is on the CSSBB exam? The Body of Knowledge
The CSSBB syllabus is ASQ’s Body of Knowledge (BoK). ASQ Quality Press materials refer to the 2022 CSSBB BoK, organised into nine sections. Five of them follow a project through DMAIC — define, measure, analyse, improve, control; the other four cover organisation-wide deployment, process management, team management and Design for Six Sigma.

Six Sigma Black Belt certification requirements
ASQ sets two conditions before you may sit the exam. First, three years of on-the-job experience in one or more areas of the CSSBB Body of Knowledge, earned in a full-time, paid role. Second, project work: ASQ asks for one completed project with a signed affidavit, or two completed projects with signed affidavits, and states that the certification requires at least one completed Six Sigma project with a project affidavit.
ASQ does not list a degree or a mandatory course among the requirements. You submit an application online, ASQ reviews it, and once approved you schedule the exam with Prometric in the testing window you chose.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification: how ASQ handles lean
Perhaps you were looking for a lean six sigma black belt certification rather than a Six Sigma one. ASQ’s credential is called the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, without “lean” in the name — but lean is part of the scope: the ASQ handbook for the 2022 BoK says it reflects the latest applications of Six Sigma and lean tools. If you were looking for an ASQ lean six sigma black belt certification, the CSSBB is the black belt credential ASQ issues.
So what is lean six sigma black belt certification if it does not come from ASQ? Whoever issues it sets the rules: a lean six sigma black belt certification program from another organisation has its own course, its own exam and its own requirements. Its lean six sigma black belt certification cost is set by that provider, and its lean six sigma black belt certification exam is not the ASQ exam. ASQ also sells a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt e-learning course of its own; that course page describes CEUs on completion, not the CSSBB credential, which still requires the exam.

When people ask for the best lean six sigma black belt certification, the useful comparison is concrete: who issues it, whether there is a proctored exam, whether experience is checked, and whether it has to be renewed.

Six Sigma green or black belt certification?
ASQ runs both levels. The Green Belt (CSSGB) also asks for three years of experience in its Body of Knowledge, but its exam is shorter — 110 questions — and its fee is US$483. A Green Belt is a lifetime certification at ASQ with no recertification; the Black Belt has to be renewed every three years.
Choosing between a Six Sigma green or black belt certification comes down to your role. If you assist on projects, Green Belt matches ASQ’s description; if you lead them and coach teams, Black Belt does. If you were looking for a Lean Six Sigma green/black belt certification as one package, note that ASQ runs them as two separate certifications with separate exams, and the CSSBB requirements do not list a Green Belt.

After the Black Belt: Master Black Belt
The level above is ASQ’s Six Sigma Master Black Belt (MBB). If you are looking for a lean six sigma master black belt certification, ASQ’s version requires a current CSSBB, a portfolio review, and either five years in a Black Belt or Master Black Belt role or ten completed Black Belt projects. The exam has 110 multiple-choice items plus a performance-based assessment; the portfolio review costs US$800 and the exam US$1,599 (US$700 and US$1,499 for members).

Recertification: how long the CSSBB is valid
ASQ requires Black Belts to recertify every three years. You either collect 18 recertification units (RUs) within the three-year period and submit them, or retake the certification exam at the end of the period.

A so-called dump is a risk to the credential, not a way to pass.
