Six Sigma Black Belt training and courses

ASQ does not require a course for its Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) — the requirements are experience and a project affidavit, then the exam. If you want structured preparation, ASQ runs its own CSSBB course in three formats: face-to-face (37.5 hours, US$2,349), live virtual (37.5 hours, US$1,224) and self-paced e-learning (55 hours, US$924), each cheaper for members.

Do you need Six Sigma Black Belt training to get certified?

Not for the ASQ credential. ASQ’s CSSBB requirements are three years of full-time, paid experience in the Body of Knowledge and one or two completed projects with signed affidavits. No course appears on that list, so six sigma black belt certification training is preparation for the exam, not an entry ticket.

That matters when comparing offers. If an offer sells six sigma black belt training and certification as one package, check whether the certification is the provider’s own certificate or the ASQ credential. ASQ’s course page is explicit about the difference for its own training: taking the course does not constitute, nor imply, passing the ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt exam.

ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt training formats

The Six Sigma Black Belt training ASQ runs itself is one course — Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Preparation — in three delivery formats. All three follow the CSSBB Body of Knowledge; the face-to-face course has nine modules based on its nine areas.

  • Face-to-face: a five-day course, 37.5 hours — US$2,349 list, US$2,119 for members
  • Live virtual: 37.5 hours — US$1,224 list, US$1,024 for members
  • Self-paced e-learning: 55 hours, access for 365 days — US$924 list, US$824 for members

Six Sigma Black Belt course online

If you want a six sigma black belt course online, ASQ offers two of the three formats remotely. The live virtual course keeps a timetable and an instructor; the self-paced e-learning version lets you work through 55 hours of material on your own within a year, with knowledge checks plus a pre-test and post-test.

Online six sigma black belt training changes the delivery, not the outcome: you still sit the ASQ exam separately, at a Prometric centre or by live remote proctoring. A six sigma black belt online certification course from any provider ends in that provider’s certificate unless it explicitly prepares you for an independent exam.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training

ASQ also sells a separate Lean Six Sigma Black Belt e-learning course: 77 hours of self-paced modules, US$2,480 list or US$2,230 for members. Its outline covers DMAIC, lean waste reduction, process capability, hypothesis testing, design of experiments and statistical process control.

Read that offer carefully. The course page says learners earn IACET continuing education units on completion; it does not describe it as preparation for, or a route to, the CSSBB. So this lean six sigma black belt online course is training, and a lean six sigma black belt certification course in the sense of an independent credential would still need the ASQ exam afterwards.

When you compare lean six sigma black belt training course offers, or anything sold as lean six sigma black belt training and certification, ask the same questions: who issues the certificate at the end, is there a proctored exam, and does it check real project work?

How to compare Six Sigma Black Belt training programs

Even ASQ’s own six sigma black belt training programs range from 37.5 to 55 hours. For each option you consider, check:

  • Scope — does it follow ASQ’s nine-section Body of Knowledge if you are aiming for the CSSBB?
  • Outcome — a provider certificate, or preparation for the ASQ exam?
  • Exam fee — ASQ’s course pages do not say the US$585 exam fee is included, so budget for it separately.
  • Projects — the CSSBB needs completed project work with an affidavit; a course alone does not supply that.

Six Sigma Master Black Belt certification and training

The six sigma master black belt certification at ASQ sits above the CSSBB and is gated by experience rather than training: you need a current CSSBB, a passed portfolio review, and either five years in a Black Belt or Master Black Belt role or ten completed Black Belt projects. The exam has 110 multiple-choice items plus a performance-based assessment; the portfolio review costs US$800 and the exam US$1,599 (US$700 and US$1,499 for members).

ASQ’s Master Black Belt page lists no mandatory course, so lean six sigma master black belt training is optional preparation in the same way as Black Belt training is.
