Six Sigma Black Belt study guide
The CSSBB exam is open book, so your study plan has two jobs: learn the 2022 Body of Knowledge, and build bound references you can navigate under time pressure. ASQ’s own core materials are The ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook (Fourth Edition, 2022), which ASQ says you can use in the exam, and its Study Guide with 550 practice questions organised by the nine BoK sections.

The ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook
The ASQ Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook is ASQ Quality Press’s companion to the exam’s Body of Knowledge. The Fourth Edition, published in 2022, is updated to the 2022 CSSBB BoK and, according to ASQ, also reflects current applications of Six Sigma and lean tools. It lists at US$150, or US$105 for ASQ members.
Because the exam is open book, the handbook is more than reading material — ASQ’s CSSBB page notes it can be used during the exam. Whether you look for it under its full title or simply as the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook, make sure you have the Fourth Edition, the one ASQ ties to the 2022 BoK.

Open-book rules: what you can take into the exam
ASQ states that all its exams are open book and that each candidate brings their own reference materials. Every reference, including all forms of notes, must be bound. Loose printouts are not allowed.
That turns your preparation into building a toolkit. Tab the asq certified six sigma black belt handbook by BoK section, keep a bound sheet of formulas and tables you use often, and practise finding them. With 165 questions in 4 hours 18 minutes, you have about a minute and a half per question — not enough time to read a chapter for each one.

Six Sigma Black Belt practice test and practice exam
ASQ’s Study Guide (Second Edition, 2023) contains 550 practice questions and solutions organised by the nine sections of the 2022 BoK, and lists at US$60 (US$42 for members). ASQ also sells a CSSBB Question Bank that provides sample exam questions based on the Body of Knowledge.
Use a six sigma black belt practice test in two ways. Section by section while you study, to find weak areas early. Then at least one full six sigma black belt practice exam under exam conditions — timed, open book, using only your bound references — to see whether your toolkit actually works at exam pace. A six sigma black belt mock test that you take with unlimited time measures knowledge but not readiness.
If you are working with lean six sigma black belt practice exam material from a training provider, check it against ASQ’s nine sections first: a lean six sigma black belt practice test built for a provider’s own certificate may skip Design for Six Sigma or team management topics that the CSSBB covers.

Six Sigma Black Belt exam questions: what to expect
The computer-based exam has 165 multiple-choice questions, 150 scored and 15 unscored, and you need 550 of 750 points. Six sigma black belt test questions span the full project cycle — define, measure, analyse, improve, control — plus organisation-wide deployment, process management, team management and Design for Six Sigma.
Six sigma black belt exam questions passed around as copies of the real exam are not study material. ASQ’s testing agreement forbids using unauthorized study materials containing confidential exam content and sharing exam questions online, and sanctions include revoked certifications and exam bans. The same applies to lean six sigma black belt test questions sold as “actual exam” content.

A study order that fits the CSSBB
Start with the BoK document from ASQ’s CSSBB page, so you know the scope. Work through the handbook section by section, building your bound references as you go. Use practice questions per section, then full timed practice exams. Book the exam once your timed results are consistently comfortable, not when you first scrape a pass.
