The AWS Cloud Practitioner exam: format, difficulty and scheduling
The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam (CLF-C02) is 65 questions in 90 minutes, and AWS designed it for people who are new to the cloud. This page covers what the exam day looks like, how the score works, how to book it, and what AWS does and does not publish about difficulty.

How long is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam?
The exam runs for 90 minutes and contains 65 questions, each either multiple choice or multiple response. That works out at a little under 85 seconds per question if you spread the time evenly.
If English is not your first language and you take the exam in English, AWS offers a 30-minute extension on request. You ask for it once in your AWS Certification Account before you register, and it then applies to your future registrations.

How the exam is scored
According to the CLF-C02 exam guide, 50 of the 65 questions count towards your score and 15 are unscored questions that do not affect your score. You are not told which ones are which, so treat every question as if it counts.
Results are reported as a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, and the minimum passing score is 700. The exam uses a compensatory scoring model: you do not need to pass each content domain separately, only the exam overall. A weak domain can therefore be offset by a strong one — but the largest domains carry the most points.
There are two question types. A multiple-choice question has one correct answer and three distractors. A multiple-response question has two or more correct answers among five or more options, and you have to pick all of them.

How hard is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam?
AWS describes the target candidate plainly: the exam is designed for people new to the cloud who may not have an IT background. Candidates could have up to six months of exposure to AWS, but AWS states that this is not required, and no training is mandatory either.
So is the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam hard? It asks you to recognise and describe — which service fits a need, who is responsible for what under the shared responsibility model, which pricing model suits a workload — rather than to build or configure anything. The difficulty for most candidates lies in the breadth of services and in multiple-response questions, where a half-right answer earns nothing.

AWS Cloud Practitioner pass rate
AWS does not publish a pass rate for this exam, or for any of its certification exams. Any percentage you see quoted as the AWS Cloud Practitioner pass rate does not come from AWS.
What AWS does publish is the passing score of 700 in the exam guide, while its FAQ adds that passing scores are set by statistical analysis and are subject to change.

What the exam covers
The exam guide divides the scored content into four domains. Because scoring is compensatory, these weightings tell you where most of your points come from.
- Cloud Concepts — 24%: benefits of the AWS Cloud, design principles, migration strategies and cloud economics
- Security and Compliance — 30%: the shared responsibility model, governance and compliance, access management, security resources
- Cloud Technology and Services — 34%: deployment methods, global infrastructure, compute, database, network, storage, AI/ML and analytics services
- Billing, Pricing, and Support — 12%: pricing models, billing and cost-management tools, technical resources and AWS Support options

How to schedule the AWS Cloud Practitioner exam
To schedule AWS Cloud Practitioner exam appointments, sign in to your AWS Certification Account, choose “Schedule New Exam”, find the exam and select the option to schedule with Pearson VUE. You are then passed to your Pearson VUE dashboard, where you pick a test centre or online proctoring, a date and a time.
For online proctoring, AWS notes that you must be able to communicate with the proctor. English-language online appointments are available around the clock. Bring valid government-issued ID plus a secondary ID; AWS’s ID rules differ slightly between online and in-person testing, so check them before the day.

AWS Cloud Practitioner: schedule, exam day and results
Once your AWS Cloud Practitioner exam schedule is set, you can reschedule up to 24 hours before the appointment, and each appointment can be rescheduled twice. Inside the last 24 hours you can neither cancel nor reschedule; a late cancellation or a no-show forfeits the exam fee.
Most AWS exams do not show a pass or fail at the end of the test. Results arrive within five business days. If you do not pass, you must wait 14 calendar days before you can retake the exam.
One date to note: AWS states that the Italian and German versions of this exam will be retired after 31 December 2026.

How long to study for AWS Cloud Practitioner
AWS does not set a number of study hours, and this page will not invent one. What AWS does publish is the length of its own courses: AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials is listed at 12 hours 45 minutes, and the AWS SimuLearn: Cloud Practitioner Learning Plan at 12 hours.
Your own time depends mostly on how much of the exam guide is already familiar. Someone who works with AWS daily needs far less than someone meeting terms like “Availability Zone” for the first time. The useful measure is not hours spent but whether you can answer questions from all four domains reliably.

How to pass: AWS Cloud Practitioner exam strategy
Start from the exam guide rather than from a course outline: it lists every task statement and the in-scope services. Then weight your time by the domains — Cloud Technology and Services and Security and Compliance together make up almost two thirds of the scored content.
Practise both question types under time pressure, especially multiple-response items, and review why each wrong option is wrong rather than only memorising the right one. Book the exam once your practice results are consistently strong across all four domains, not after one good run.
Certsqill’s AWS Cloud Practitioner practice questions are expert-developed, explain every answer option, and give you a readiness score per exam domain, so you can see which domain still costs you points. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
