AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner training and courses
AWS does not require any training before the Cloud Practitioner exam, but it offers a lot of its own — much of it free. This page sets out the official AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials course, the free and paid exam-prep options on AWS Skill Builder, and what to check before you pay for any other course.

Is AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner training required?
No. AWS’s certification FAQ states that training is recommended as part of your preparation but is not mandatory. You can book the exam without completing any course, and AWS designed the exam for candidates who may have no IT background.
So the question is not whether you need AWS Cloud Practitioner training, but how much of it you need to cover the exam guide. Someone who already works with AWS may only need practice questions; a career changer will usually want a structured course first.

The AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials course
AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials is AWS’s own foundational course and the usual starting point. AWS lists the on-demand digital course at 12 hours 45 minutes. AWS released a major update in June 2025, and its announcement describes 13 modules: introduction to the cloud, compute in the cloud, exploring compute services, going global, networking, storage, databases, AI/ML and data analytics, security, monitoring, compliance and governance, pricing and support, migrating to the AWS Cloud, and well-architected solutions.
The course includes instructor demos in the AWS Management Console and knowledge checks. AWS calls it a resource for starting your journey towards the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam; it does not present it as an exam-prep course, so pair it with practice questions.
A note on names: there is no “AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Essentials course” as such. The course is AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials; the certification is AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner. Completing the course does not certify you — only passing the exam does.

Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials free course really free?
When AWS updated the course in June 2025, it listed AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials under the free digital courses on AWS Skill Builder. You need a Skill Builder account to view it.
Through AWS Skill Builder, Cloud Practitioner Essentials course access sits alongside what AWS describes as hundreds of free digital courses and learning plans. If you want free AWS Cloud Practitioner training from AWS itself, the AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials digital course is the natural first stop. As an AWS Cloud Practitioner free course it covers the content; the free practice question sets described below cover the exam format.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam training: free and paid prep
For the exam itself, AWS separates free from subscription material. Free on Skill Builder: the Official Practice Question Sets of 20 questions, a 2-hour Exam Prep course that explores the topic areas and reviews sample questions for each domain, and AWS Cloud Quest.
With a subscription: the Official Practice Exam and a longer Exam Prep course with 6 to 8 hours of videos, hands-on labs and additional practice questions. AWS lists the Skill Builder Individual subscription at 29 USD per month or 449 USD per year; the annual plan adds expert instruction through Digital Classrooms.

How to pick the best AWS Cloud Practitioner course
There is no single best AWS Cloud Practitioner course for everyone, but every AWS Cloud Practitioner certification course you consider should pass the same checks. A useful AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner course is written for CLF-C02, the current exam version, and covers all four domains at roughly the exam’s weighting: Cloud Concepts 24%, Security and Compliance 30%, Cloud Technology and Services 34%, and Billing, Pricing, and Support 12%.
Beyond that, look for practice that resembles the exam — multiple-choice and multiple-response questions with explanations for every option — and for some hands-on time in the AWS console. A course that only lectures leaves you guessing whether you are ready.

Is an AWS Cloud Practitioner bootcamp worth it?
A bootcamp — an intensive, instructor-led course over a few days — suits people who learn best with a teacher and a fixed schedule. Before you pay, check that it is written for CLF-C02, that it covers every domain in the exam guide, and whether the exam fee is included or extra.
AWS’s own instructor-led option is AWS Classroom Training, delivered in person or virtually by AWS instructors. Whatever the format, an AWS Cloud Practitioner training course is only as good as your results on practice questions afterwards.
