Check Point CCTE certification: exam, prerequisites and renewal
CCTE is the Check Point Certified Troubleshooting Expert. Check Point requires a valid or expired CCSE (R80 or above) before the CCTE exam, delivers its exams through Pearson VUE, and treats specialist certifications as two-year credentials renewed by passing the exam again. Check Point retired its R81.20 CCSA and CCSE exams on 30 June 2026; the current CCTE exam version, question count, duration, passing score and price are not on any public Check Point page we could verify.

What is the Check Point CCTE certification?
CCTE stands for Check Point Certified Troubleshooting Expert. It is Check Point’s troubleshooting credential above the security expert level: you can only sit the CCTE exam once you hold, or have held, a CCSE.
Where CCSA and CCSE test whether you can deploy and manage Check Point security, CCTE is about finding the cause once a deployment stops behaving as configured. Check Point publishes a course overview for the Certified Troubleshooting Expert (CCTE) R81.20 course, which ties the credential to a specific software release.
A note on sources: Check Point’s own certification FAQ and course data sheets could not be read as public pages on 14 October 2026. Everything on this page comes from statements by Check Point employees in Check Point’s official CheckMates community, dated where they are older.

CCTE prerequisites
Check Point’s rule, as announced by its training team for the program changes of 1 April 2023: a valid or expired CCSE (R80 or above) is required before attempting the CCTE exam. A previous CCTA or CCTE is not a prerequisite.
So an expired CCSE still qualifies you for CCTE, as long as it is R80 or newer. An R77 or older CCSE does not; Check Point said those candidates must restart the path with the CCSA exam.
The rule names a certification, not a course. Check Point did not list course attendance as a requirement for the exam.

CCTE exam: what Check Point confirms
Check Point’s training team states that its exams are on Pearson VUE. A Check Point employee also confirmed in April 2026 that an exam voucher is not locked to a version of the exam and should be valid for one year after purchase.
What we could not confirm from a public Check Point source today: the number of questions, the time limit, the passing score and the exam price. Figures circulating on training and dump sites are not Check Point statements, so they are not repeated here. Pearson VUE shows the current exam details when you book.

CCTE exam versions: R81, R81.20 and R82
Check Point issues exams per software release. In January 2024 a Check Point employee confirmed that both CCTE exams then on offer — 156-586 for R81 and 156-587 for R81.20 — qualified for recertification.
Since then, Check Point has moved its core exams to R82. It released the R82 CCSA (156-215.82) and CCSE (156-315.82) exams and retired the R81.20 CCSA and CCSE exams on 30 June 2026. That announcement does not mention CCTE.
Whether the R81.20 CCTE exam is still bookable, and which code an R82 CCTE exam carries, is not stated on any public Check Point page we could read. Search for CCTE in Pearson VUE’s Check Point catalogue and confirm the version before you buy a voucher or start studying a specific release.

CCTE training
Check Point runs an official Certified Troubleshooting Expert course; its published course overview covers the R81.20 release. Because the course is tied to a software version, match the course version to the exam version you plan to take.
Check Point’s published prerequisite rule asks for a CCSE, not for course attendance. Experienced Check Point engineers can therefore prepare on their own, using Check Point’s documentation and their own lab, as long as they cover the release their exam is based on.

How long is CCTE valid and how do you renew it?
Asked about an expired CCTE, a Check Point employee stated that all specialist certifications are two-year certifications and that extensions do not apply to them. Earning CCSM or CCSM Elite does not extend them either.
To recertify, you sit the exam again — the same version or an updated version if one is available. Plan the renewal before the two years are up, and check which version Pearson VUE currently offers.

CCTE and the CCSM path
CCTE also counts towards Check Point’s Security Master track. In 2023 a Check Point employee explained that passing the then-current CCTE exam before your CCSE expires leads to CCSM, but it does not renew the CCSE itself.
The practical point is timing: if CCSM is your goal, take CCTE while your CCSE is still valid, because Check Point tied the CCSM step to passing CCTE before the CCSE expires.

CCTE vs CCTA
CCTA, the Check Point Certified Troubleshooting Administrator, is the troubleshooting credential one level down. Its prerequisite is a valid or expired CCSA (R80 or above), or an R80/R81+ CCSE. CCTE requires a CCSE.
Check Point states that a previous CCTA is not a prerequisite for CCTE, so a CCSE holder can go straight to the expert exam. Candidates who hold only CCSA take CCTA, or first move up to CCSE.

CCTE practice questions
Certsqill’s CCTE practice questions are expert-developed and focus on Check Point troubleshooting at expert level — the reasoning a CCSE holder needs when management, gateway, policy or VPN behaviour does not match the configuration.
Each question comes with an explanation for every answer option, and your results build a readiness score per domain, so you know which area to lab again before you book. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
