Security+ salary and jobs: what the certification is used for

CompTIA publishes no salary figure for Security+ on its certification pages, so this page quotes none. What CompTIA does publish is more useful for a career decision: the work roles Security+ is recognised for, the experience it expects, and what it costs to keep the certification current.

CompTIA Security Plus salary: why this page quotes no number

On 9 October 2026 neither the Security+ V7 page nor the V8 page nor CompTIA’s Security+ overview showed a CompTIA security salary figure. A single CompTIA Security Plus salary quoted elsewhere comes from a survey or a job board, not from CompTIA, and it blends the certification with job title, location and years of experience.

We would rather say that plainly than repeat a number we cannot source. Pay follows the role you hold, so the better question behind a search for Security Plus salary is which roles the certification opens up — and that part CompTIA does document.

Jobs with Security Plus certification: the roles CompTIA names

On its Security+ V7 page, CompTIA lists the DoD 8140 work roles that Security+ is recognised for. If you are asking what jobs can I get with a Security Plus certification, this is the official list to start from. CompTIA ends it with “and many more”:

  • Cyber defense analyst
  • Incident responder
  • Vulnerability analyst
  • Security control assessor
  • System administrator
  • Network specialist
  • Systems planner
  • IT project manager
  • Information security manager
  • Secure software assessor

Security Plus certification jobs and the experience behind them

On the Security+ overview page, CompTIA tags the certification with three role labels: Security Analyst, Security Engineer and Systems Administrator. These are the job titles you will most often see Security+ attached to.

The certification is not pitched at complete beginners. For the current SY0-701 exam CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years of experience in a security or systems administrator role; for V8, due on or around 17 November 2026, it recommends a security administrator with two years of hands-on experience. Recommended, not required — but it tells you where CompTIA expects candidates to be when they apply for jobs for Security Plus certification holders.

Security Plus certification salary vs. the cost of keeping it

Any salary for Security Plus certification holders has to be weighed against what the credential costs over time. CompTIA certifications renew on a three-year cycle that starts on the date you certify. To renew you earn continuing education units (50 for Security+) and pay an annual CE fee, or you pass a qualifying higher-level CompTIA certification such as CySA+, PenTest+ or SecurityX within the cycle.

The exam itself is a per-attempt cost: CompTIA’s retake policy says candidates pay the exam price each time they attempt it.

Is Security Plus worth it?

CompTIA gives you facts rather than promises. Security+ is recognised for the DoD 8140 work roles listed above, the SY0-701 exam is a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes with a passing score of 750 on a scale of 100 to 900, and the credential lasts three years before renewal.

Whether that is worth it for you depends on whether those roles are the ones you are aiming at, and on timing: SY0-701 retires for English on 11 June 2027, and V8 launches on or around 17 November 2026, so decide which version you will sit before you buy study material.

Getting ready for the exam itself

A role that asks for Security+ needs the certificate first, and a failed attempt means paying again. Certsqill has expert-developed Security+ practice questions with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per exam domain, so you can see which domain still puts you at risk. Security+ salary & career value: questions people ask

What is the average Security Plus certification salary?

CompTIA publishes no salary figure on its Security+ certification pages, checked 9 October 2026, so we do not quote one. Pay depends on the role you hold rather than on the certificate alone.

What jobs can I get with a Security Plus certification?

CompTIA lists DoD 8140 work roles including cyber defense analyst, incident responder, vulnerability analyst, security control assessor, system administrator, network specialist, systems planner, IT project manager, information security manager and secure software assessor. Source: CompTIA Security+ V7 page, checked 9 October 2026.

Is Security Plus worth it without experience?

CompTIA does not require experience, but it recommends Network+ and two years in a security or systems administrator role for SY0-701. The roles it names expect that background, so the certification works best alongside it.

How long does Security+ stay valid?

Three years from the date you certify. You renew with 50 continuing education units and the annual CE fee, or by passing a qualifying higher-level CompTIA certification. Source: CompTIA CE programme pages, checked 9 October 2026.
