CompTIA Security+ study guide: what to study and how
Every Security+ study guide is a rewrite of one document: CompTIA’s exam objectives. Start there, check which exam version your material covers — SY0-701 now, V8 from around 17 November 2026 — and spend your time in proportion to how CompTIA weights each domain.

Start every CompTIA Security Plus study guide from the objectives
CompTIA publishes the SY0-701 objectives as five weighted domains on its Security+ V7 page. Any Security Plus certification study guide worth buying maps chapter by chapter onto them, and the weights tell you where your hours belong:
- Security operations — 28%
- Threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations — 22%
- Security program management and oversight — 20%
- Security architecture — 18%
- General security concepts — 12%

SY0-701 study guide or V8?
A SY0-701 study guide is the right choice if you will sit the exam before it retires: 11 June 2027 for English, 13 August 2027 for Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai.
Security+ V8, exam SY0-801, is expected on or around 17 November 2026 with reweighted domains: general security concepts 16%, threats, vulnerabilities and attacks 24%, security architecture 19%, security operations 27%, security program management and oversight 14%. CompTIA lists AI-related risks among the V8 skills. Material written for SY0-701 will not cover those changes, so buy for the version you will book.

How to judge the best Security Plus study guide
There is no single best Security Plus study guide for everyone, but there are clear tests a good one passes. Whether it is a printed Security Plus study book, a video course or a set of notes, check:
- The exam code on the cover or course page — SY0-701 or SY0-801 — and a publication date after that exam launched (SY0-701 launched on 7 November 2023).
- Coverage of all five domains, in roughly CompTIA’s proportions.
- Hands-on material for the performance-based questions, not only reading.
- Practice questions with explanations, so you learn from wrong answers.

Official Security Plus study material from CompTIA
CompTIA’s own Security Plus study material is its CertMaster range. CertMaster Learn is an interactive, self-paced course with integrated videos and interactive activities, which CompTIA describes as ideal for use 90 to 180 days before your exam. CertMaster Labs is the lab component, and CertMaster Practice offers timed practice exams, objective quizzes and exam objective mastery scores.
They are sold individually and in bundles with an exam voucher on the Security+ V7 page.

Is there a free Security Plus study guide?
The free official starting point is CompTIA’s objectives summary on the Security+ V7 page: it names every domain and its weight. Used as a checklist, it does the job of a free Security Plus study guide — it tells you what you will be tested on, though not how to learn it.
For the learning part, practice questions with full explanations fill the gap. Certsqill offers a free Security+ practice test to start with, and each option you get wrong comes with the reasoning behind the right one.

Looking for a Security Plus study guide PDF?
On 9 October 2026 the Security+ V7 page presented the objectives as an on-page summary rather than a download. If you find a Security Plus study guide PDF elsewhere, check two things: which exam code it was written for, and whether it reproduces live exam items. CompTIA’s Candidate Agreement names braindumps and leaked exam content explicitly, and using them can cost you the certification.

How to study for Security Plus: a domain-by-domain plan
CompTIA publishes no study-hours figure, so plan by evidence rather than by the calendar. A plan that works for most people who study Security Plus while working:
- Take a short diagnostic first to see which domains are weakest.
- Study in order of weight and weakness: security operations and threats together are half of SY0-701.
- After each domain, answer practice questions and read every explanation, including for the ones you got right.
- Practise performance-based tasks separately — they reward doing, not recognising.
- Finish with timed full runs of up to 90 questions in 90 minutes, then book once every domain is consistently safe.

Security Plus exam prep that shows when you are ready
The last phase of Security Plus exam prep is measurement. Certsqill’s expert-developed Security+ practice questions explain every answer option and give you a readiness score per exam domain, so you can see which part of the objectives still puts you at risk. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
Security+ study guide: questions people ask
What should a Security Plus study guide cover?
The five SY0-701 domains as CompTIA weights them: security operations 28%, threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations 22%, security program management and oversight 20%, security architecture 18%, general security concepts 12%. Source: CompTIA Security+ V7 page, checked 9 October 2026.
Is there a Security Plus study guide free from CompTIA?
CompTIA’s free resource is the objectives summary on its Security+ V7 page. Its CertMaster study products are paid, sold individually or in bundles.
How long should I study for Security Plus?
CompTIA publishes no study-hours figure. It recommends Network+ and two years in a security or systems administrator role, and describes its own CertMaster Learn course as ideal for use 90 to 180 days before the exam.
Will a SY0-701 study guide work for V8?
Not fully. V8 (SY0-801) reweights the domains and adds topics such as AI-related risks. Use SY0-701 material only if you will sit SY0-701 before it retires on 11 June 2027 (English).
What is the best way to do Security Plus test prep in the final weeks?
Timed full practice runs under exam conditions, followed by targeted review of the weakest domain. Book once every domain is consistently safe, not when the average looks good.
