What is the CompTIA Tech Plus certification?

CompTIA Tech+ is CompTIA’s starting-point cert for people who are exploring a career in tech. In CompTIA’s words, it is the essential certification for anyone exploring a career in tech, and CompTIA recommends no prior experience. The current version is V6, launched on 16 July 2024 and tested with exam FC0-U71.

The exam covers the basics a tech worker is expected to know: how computers and networks work, what operating systems and applications do, the first concepts of programming and databases, and everyday security. It is broad rather than deep, which is exactly what makes it useful as a first step.

CompTIA ITF certification is now Tech+

If you are looking for the CompTIA ITF certification, you will now find it as Tech+. CompTIA describes Tech+ as formerly known as CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+) and calls it an upgrade from ITF+ (FC0-U61), with a stronger focus on hands-on skills; the two exams cover similar material.

CompTIA stated that ITF+ would be retired in 2025, without giving a more specific date in that announcement. For new candidates, FC0-U71 is the exam to book. If you already hold ITF+, CompTIA says you do not need to take Tech+.

How much does the CompTIA Tech+ exam cost?

CompTIA’s Tech+ page does not show a price; it points to “Buy Now” and to bundles that include an exam voucher plus Retake Assurance. CompTIA’s FAQ simply says you buy an exam voucher; the binding price is the one shown at purchase.

If you are unsure whether you will pass first time, compare the plain voucher with a bundle that includes a retake before you buy, rather than paying for a second voucher later.

CompTIA Tech+ exam format and passing score

The Tech+ exam has a maximum of 70 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 60 minutes. You pass with a score of 650 on a scale of 900. It is offered in English and Japanese.

Sixty minutes for up to 70 questions is less than a minute per question, so the test rewards quick recall of terms and concepts. Practise answering at that pace, not just knowing the material.

You can take the test online through Pearson OnVUE, a remote proctoring service, from a private space after running the system test on the same computer and network. Online testing is not available in some countries, including China, South Korea and Slovenia; there, and anywhere you prefer, you can book a Pearson VUE test center.

FC0-U71 vs FC0-U71-CE: does Tech+ expire?

With Tech+ you choose the validity when you pick the exam code. FC0-U71 does not expire. FC0-U71-CE expires five years from the date it is earned and must be renewed before then; CompTIA says you renew it by taking and passing the next available CE version of the Tech+ exam.

CompTIA leaves the choice to you: candidates can choose the exam code that best meets their requirements. If an employer or programme asks specifically for a CE credential, book FC0-U71-CE; otherwise, the lifetime FC0-U71 is the simpler option.

CompTIA Tech+ exam objectives

CompTIA publishes six domains with weightings for Tech+ V6. Infrastructure is the largest at 24% and covers devices, internal components, storage, peripherals, interfaces, virtualisation and cloud, and networking basics. Security follows at 19%, applications and software at 18%, and three domains carry 13% each.

The objective list is specific. Expect binary, hexadecimal and octal number systems, storage and speed units, a troubleshooting methodology, file systems such as NTFS and FAT32, programming data types and concepts like variables, arrays and functions, relational versus non-relational databases with primary and foreign keys, and security basics from the CIA triad to password managers and encryption in transit. Artificial intelligence now appears too: chatbots, assistants and generative AI.

  • Tech concepts and terminology — 13%
  • Infrastructure — 24%
  • Applications and software — 18%
  • Software development concepts — 13%
  • Data and database fundamentals — 13%
  • Security — 19%

CompTIA Tech+ course and study options

CompTIA’s own training for Tech+ comes in three CertMaster products. CertMaster Learn, estimated at 25–40 hours, is the main course and, according to CompTIA, best for those building foundational knowledge and skills. CertMaster Labs, 15–25 hours, gives hands-on practice in a virtual lab environment. CertMaster Practice, 10–20 hours, is for confirming that you are ready for the exam.

A sensible study order follows the domain weights: start with infrastructure and security, which together make up 43% of the exam, then work through applications, development concepts, data and terminology. Use the official objective list as a checklist and tick off each bullet only when you can explain it in your own words.

CompTIA Tech+ vs A+

Tech+ and A+ sit at different points on the path. Tech+ is a single exam with no experience recommended. CompTIA calls A+ the industry standard to start your IT career, and it requires two exams: Core 1 on hardware and networking and Core 2 on operating systems and security.

If you are still deciding whether tech is for you, Tech+ is the lower-stakes start. If you already know you want to start an IT career and are ready for two exams, A+ is the next CompTIA step to look at.

CompTIA Tech+ practice test and practice questions

CompTIA’s official practice option is CertMaster Practice. Whatever you use, a good practice test should mirror the real exam: up to 70 questions, 60 minutes, spread across all six domains in proportion to their weights.

Certsqill Tech+ practice questions are expert-developed, with an explanation for every option and a readiness score per domain.
