Why you can trust these Elastic Observability Engineer questions
What is the Elastic Certified Observability Engineer certification?
Elastic introduced the Observability Engineer certification in February 2021 to recognise individuals who have demonstrated a high level of expertise in observability. It is aimed at developers, engineers, architects, DevOps practitioners, SREs and system administrators who implement observability with the Elastic Stack.
In Elastic’s words, the exam covers ingesting logs, metrics, APM traces and uptime data into a single data source, and analysing and reacting to events with Kibana, machine learning and alerting. It is one of four certifications Elastic currently lists, next to the Elastic Certified Engineer, the Elastic Certified Analyst and the Elastic Certified SIEM Analyst.
As of 14 October 2026 the certification is active: the Elastic Certification FAQ lists it with a current price and stack version and shows no retirement notice.

How much does the Elastic Certified Observability Engineer exam cost?
Elastic charges $500 USD per attempt for the Elastic Certified Observability Engineer exam. Reattempts are not offered at a discounted rate, so a failed attempt means buying another one at full price, and exam purchases are not refundable.
After you purchase an attempt, you have one year to use it. Plan your preparation so that you sit the exam inside that window rather than letting a $500 attempt lapse.

Elastic Certified Observability Engineer exam format
The exam is hands-on and performance-based. Instead of answering multiple-choice questions, you complete a series of timed, real-world tasks in a live Elastic Stack environment. Elastic does not state the exam length or the number of tasks in its FAQ.
The tasks are based on Elastic Stack version 8.8. Note that this differs from the Elastic Certified Engineer exam, which is already on 9.3, so practise on an 8.8 deployment to make sure the Kibana screens, integrations and settings match what you will see.
You may use the Elastic documentation during the exam. All other external websites, including Google and Stack Overflow, are strictly prohibited — knowing where to find the right documentation page quickly is part of the skill being tested.

Taking the exam: remote proctoring and system requirements
The exam is delivered online with remote proctoring. A proctor watches both you and your screen and monitors you through audio and video for the whole exam.
Linux is not supported as the operating system for taking the exam, so you need a Windows or macOS machine. Check your webcam, microphone and network before the exam day.

Elastic Certified Observability Engineer passing score and results
Elastic does not publish a numeric passing score for the exam on its certification FAQ, and this guide does not repeat figures from elsewhere. With no number to aim for, the safe plan is to be able to complete every task fully rather than partially.
Results are not immediate. Elastic states that you will typically receive your exam results within 7 to 10 business days.

What is on the Elastic Certified Observability Engineer exam?
Elastic summarises the scope in two halves. The first is getting data in: logs, metrics, APM traces and uptime data, ingested into a single data source. The second is using that data: analysing events and reacting to them with Kibana, machine learning and alerting.
Elastic publishes a detailed list of exam objectives on its training site and states that candidates must be able to complete all of them. Use that list as your lab checklist and make sure you can complete each objective from a clean environment with only the documentation open.

- Using the data — analysing and reacting to events with Kibana, machine learning and alerting

Recommended training and the certification prep day
Elastic recommends its Elastic Observability Engineer course, which covers the exam topics and is offered as a live, instructor-led virtual class or as a self-paced, on-demand course.
For candidates who have recently completed that course, Elastic also runs a one-day, live instructor-led Certification Prep Day of 6.5 hours. It reviews the exam objectives against the course, works through practice exam tasks with an instructor and explains the exam environment.

Retakes, validity and recertification
If you do not pass, you must wait 14 days before reattempting, and you need to buy a new attempt.
The certification is valid for two years from the exam date. Elastic states that passing again while your certification is still active extends it by two years, so recertifying before expiry keeps the credential continuous.

Observability Engineer vs Elastic Certified Engineer
Both are hands-on Elastic exams at $500 USD per attempt. The Elastic Certified Engineer focuses on Elasticsearch itself and is based on Elastic Stack 9.3; the Observability Engineer focuses on getting logs, metrics, traces and uptime data in and acting on them, and is based on 8.8.
If your day-to-day work is running clusters, indexing and search, the Engineer certification is the closer fit. If you build monitoring, APM and alerting on the Elastic Stack, the Observability Engineer certification describes that work.

Exam rules
Elastic lists cheating, the use of unauthorised materials or devices and reproducing or distributing exam content among prohibited conduct. Violations can lead to revocation of certifications and a ban from Elastic exams for a term ranging from six months to a lifetime.
On a performance-based exam leaked material is of little use anyway: you are assessed on tasks you carry out, not on answers you recall.
