What is the GitHub Actions certification?
The GitHub Actions certification is one of five GitHub certifications — alongside Foundations, Advanced Security, Administration and Copilot. GitHub describes it as a way to “certify your proficiency in automating workflows and accelerating development with GitHub Actions”. The exam behind it is GH-200.
The details now live on Microsoft Learn, which carries the certification page, the GH-200 study guide and the booking link. Microsoft rates the exam as intermediate and states who it is for: DevOps engineers, software developers and IT professionals with intermediate experience in GitHub Actions, including workflow creation, automation and CI/CD pipeline management.
Compared with GitHub Foundations, which covers Git basics, repositories, collaboration and GitHub products, the Actions exam goes deep on one product: workflows, custom actions, and running Actions across an organisation or enterprise.

How much does the GitHub Actions certification cost?
Microsoft Learn does not print a USD amount for GH-200. The certification page states only that the price is based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored, so the binding figure appears when you schedule through Pearson VUE.
Two cost details are stated. If you miss your appointment, GitHub says there is no refund of the exam fee. And if you fail, you can retake the exam 24 hours after the first attempt; Microsoft says the waiting time for later retakes varies, and it does not state a separate retake price on the page.

What is the GitHub Actions exam format?
GH-200 is a proctored exam with a time limit of 100 minutes. Microsoft adds that you “may have interactive components to complete as part of this exam”, so not every item is a plain multiple-choice question. Microsoft publishes an exam sandbox that shows the exam interface before you book.
You schedule through Pearson VUE and choose between a local test centre and an online exam. GitHub’s registration rules apply: you can book no more than 90 days in advance, and you need a valid, unexpired government-issued ID with your name, photo and signature. The name you register with must match the ID exactly.
The exam is offered in English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean and Japanese. Microsoft does not publish how many questions GH-200 contains, so any fixed number you see quoted elsewhere is not from the issuer.

GitHub Actions certification passing score
The GH-200 study guide states that a score of 700 or greater is required to pass. That is a scaled score, not a percentage: 700 does not mean 70 per cent of questions answered correctly, and a practice result in per cent cannot be compared with it one to one.
Because the question count is not published either, you cannot work backwards to a number of correct answers. The useful planning rule is to be solid in every skill area, not just the large ones — the smallest area still carries 10 to 15 per cent.

What is on the GitHub Actions exam?
Microsoft publishes five skill areas with weightings, listed in the study guide as skills measured as of January 2026:

- Author and maintain actions — 15–20%
- Manage GitHub Actions for the enterprise — 20–25%
- Secure and optimize automation — 10–15%

GitHub Actions certification prerequisites
Microsoft lists no formal prerequisite: no earlier exam and no required course. GitHub Foundations is not a condition for sitting GH-200.
What Microsoft does describe is the expected candidate. The audience profile asks for expertise in automating software development workflows with GitHub Actions — creating and maintaining workflows and actions, managing Actions at scale, and keeping automation secure and efficient for organisations and enterprises — plus familiarity with CI/CD, GitHub repositories, GitHub Packages and third-party integrations.
Read the enterprise weighting with that in mind. Managing GitHub Actions for the enterprise carries 20 to 25 per cent, and it is the area that developers who only write workflows for one repository have usually never touched.

How long is the GitHub Actions certification valid?
Microsoft Learn states that GitHub certifications are valid for two years. It also states that GitHub is moving to Microsoft’s recertification process, which will let holders keep a certification without retaking the full exam. No date for that process is given.
For the transition, the page says that GitHub certifications expiring before the new process is available will be extended by six months. Once the process is in place, holders will use Microsoft’s recertification process to maintain active GitHub certifications.

GitHub Actions certification study materials and training
The study guide is the authoritative scope document: it carries the skill areas, the weightings and the change log. It was last updated on 5 February 2026, so check any study material against that version.
For training, Microsoft points to the self-paced learning path “Automate your workflow with GitHub Actions” on Microsoft Learn, with instructor-led options alongside. For documentation it links to GitHub Docs: authoring and maintaining workflows, the workflow syntax reference, releasing and maintaining actions, and a Microsoft Learn module on managing GitHub Actions for the enterprise.
The exam sandbox is worth ten minutes before booking. It does not test you on Actions, but it shows how the interactive items behave, which is one less surprise on the day.

GitHub Actions vs GitHub Advanced Security certification
Both are intermediate GitHub exams of 100 minutes, offered in the same five languages and booked the same way. The difference is the subject. GitHub Actions is about automation: building, consuming and securing workflows and actions. GitHub Advanced Security (GH-500) is about finding and fixing vulnerabilities with secret protection, supply chain security and code security.
There is an overlap in one place: GH-200 includes “Secure and optimize automation” at 10 to 15 per cent. That is about securing the pipeline itself, not about scanning the code it builds — the latter is GH-500 territory.

GH-200 certification: who it is for
The GH-200 certification is GitHub’s intermediate-level credential for GitHub Actions. Microsoft Learn, which now hosts the GitHub certifications, describes the audience as DevOps engineers, software developers and IT professionals with intermediate experience in GitHub Actions — creating workflows, automating tasks and managing CI/CD pipelines.
If you write or maintain workflows at work, the five skill areas will feel familiar. Two areas reach beyond everyday workflow writing and deserve extra attention: “Manage GitHub Actions for the enterprise” (20–25%) and “Secure and optimize automation” (10–15%).

Preparing for the GitHub Actions certification exam
The GitHub Actions certification exam is proctored, takes 100 minutes and may include interactive components. Microsoft Learn offers an exam sandbox to try the interface, and the official learning path “Automate your workflow with GitHub Actions” covers the content.
Use the GH-200 study guide as your checklist: for each listed skill, build a small workflow in a test repository that exercises it — for example a reusable workflow, a matrix build or a custom action. Hands-on practice makes the scenario questions far easier to read.
