GitHub Copilot certification: the GH-300 exam
The GitHub Copilot certification is earned by passing exam GH-300, which GitHub delivers through Microsoft Learn and Pearson VUE. You get 100 minutes, need a score of 700 or more, and are tested on six skill areas, from responsible use to privacy and content exclusions. The price depends on the country where you test; the certification is valid for two years.

What is the GitHub Copilot certification?
The GitHub Copilot certification is GitHub’s credential for developers and teams who use Copilot, its AI coding assistant. You earn it by passing a single exam, GH-300. Microsoft Learn lists it at intermediate level for app makers, developers, DevOps engineers and technology managers.
The exam tests whether you can use GitHub Copilot to improve software development productivity, quality and security — including responsible AI use, prompt engineering, Copilot features across its plans and privacy safeguards. Candidates should be familiar with GitHub fundamentals and have experience with at least one programming language.
After the exam code, many people call it the GH-300 certification or the GH-300 GitHub Copilot certification, and it is often searched for as the Microsoft GitHub Copilot certification: GitHub moved its exams to Microsoft Learn and Pearson VUE, so registration, scheduling and your certification record now live in your Microsoft Learn profile. The name of the credential itself is simply “GitHub Copilot”, not a “Microsoft Certified” title.

GitHub Copilot certification cost
Microsoft does not publish one price for the GitHub Copilot certification exam. Its certification page states that the price is based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored, and you see the amount for your location when you schedule.
Two things affect the real cost. A retake is a new exam fee; Microsoft Learn also advertises an Exam Replay offer, so check its current terms when you book. And if your GitHub certification has already expired during the move to Microsoft’s recertification process, GitHub says to contact [email protected] for one exam voucher covering a first renewal attempt.

GH-300 exam format and passing score
The GH-300 exam is proctored and scheduled through Pearson VUE. You have 100 minutes, and Microsoft notes that the exam may include interactive components as well as standard questions. Microsoft and GitHub do not publish the number of questions.
You need a score of 700 or greater to pass. Microsoft offers an exam sandbox that shows the question types and interface before your real attempt, which is worth a few minutes if you have never taken a Microsoft-delivered exam.
The exam is offered in English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean and Japanese. Microsoft states that localised versions are updated about eight weeks after the English version, so when the skills change, the English exam reflects them first.

What is on the GitHub Copilot certification exam (GH-300)?
The GitHub Copilot certification exam GH-300 covers six skill areas, as measured from 7 August 2026. Using Copilot’s features is the largest area at 25–30%; responsible use follows at 15–20%. The four remaining areas carry 10–15% each, so none is safe to skip.
The August 2026 update brought only minor changes, to using Copilot in the IDE, to features and capabilities, and to applying safeguards and troubleshooting. If your study material predates it, check those topics against the study guide.
- Use GitHub Copilot features — 25–30%
- Use GitHub Copilot responsibly — 15–20%
- Understand GitHub Copilot data and architecture — 10–15%
- Apply prompt engineering and context crafting — 10–15%
- Improve developer productivity with GitHub Copilot — 10–15%
- Configure privacy, content exclusions, and safeguards — 10–15%

GitHub Copilot certification study guide and training
The official GitHub Copilot certification study guide is Microsoft’s “Study guide for Exam GH-300”. It lists every skill in the six areas, the passing score and a change log, and it is the document to plan your study around.
For training, the Microsoft Learn GitHub Copilot certification page links a course in its “Prepare for the exam” section, and Microsoft offers a practice assessment that gives an overview of the style, wording and difficulty of the questions. Any other course you use should be checked against the August 2026 skills list.
Plan hands-on time as well as reading: several skills in the guide — configuring content exclusions, crafting context for prompts, using Copilot features across plans — are tasks you perform, and the exam may include interactive components.

GH-300 practice test and exam questions
Microsoft’s practice assessment is the official GH-300 practice test. Microsoft says it gives an overview of the style, wording and difficulty of the exam questions and helps you see where more preparation is needed.
When you judge other GH-300 questions, check two things: that they follow the six skill areas and weights in the current study guide, and that they explain each answer. GH-300 exam questions written before August 2026 may miss the latest minor changes. GitHub Copilot certification exam questions that only quiz feature names will not prepare you for interactive tasks.

GH-300 dumps and exam dumps
GH-300 dumps — collections that claim to contain real exam content — are banned under Microsoft’s exam security policy, which governs exams delivered through Microsoft Learn. The policy defines a brain dump as a source containing exam questions that were fraudulently obtained to share or sell, and states that using such material to prepare for an exam constitutes cheating.
The consequences are spelled out: candidates may be permanently barred from future credentials, and certifications and scores may be revoked. GH-300 exam dumps therefore risk the very certification you are trying to earn.

Is the GitHub Copilot certification free?
No. GH-300 is a paid exam, priced by the country or region where it is proctored. The study guide is free on Microsoft Learn, as is the exam sandbox. A free voucher route exists only in the narrow case GitHub describes: holders whose certification already expired during the recertification transition can ask [email protected] for one voucher for a first renewal attempt.

GitHub Copilot certification validity and renewal
GitHub certifications are valid for two years. GitHub is moving to Microsoft’s recertification process, which will let holders maintain their certification without retaking the full exam. Until it is available, GitHub certifications that would expire are extended by six months.
If you fail the exam, you can retake it 24 hours after your first attempt; Microsoft says the waiting time varies for later retakes. Microsoft also recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account rather than a work or school account, because exam records tied to an organisational account are lost if you leave.
