What is the Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification?
Professional Machine Learning Engineer is one of Google Cloud’s professional-level certifications, the top tier above the foundational and associate levels. The exam guide describes the role as someone who builds, evaluates, productionises and optimises AI solutions on Google Cloud, including solutions based on foundation models, while accounting for responsible AI and working with other roles.
It is aimed at engineers who take models from prototype to production: data preparation, training, serving, pipelines and monitoring. The exam guide states that the exam does not directly assess coding skills — the questions test design and operational judgement on Google Cloud rather than whether you can write the code from memory.
The exam was recently reworked. Google states that it was updated to reflect the transition from Vertex AI to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, updates to Google Cloud’s data and analytics stack, and a priority on Google Cloud native solutions, and separately that it reflects recent branding changes. Product names in older material may therefore not match the exam.

How much does the Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification cost?
The registration fee is $200, plus tax where applicable.
Google’s exam terms state that payment is required each time you take an exam, so a retake costs another $200. The terms also cap attempts: four in a two-year period, with a 14-day wait after the first failed attempt, 60 days after the second and 365 days after the third.
There is no shorter or cheaper renewal exam for this certification. Google’s renewal FAQ groups it with the professional certifications that renew through the standard exam, so keeping the credential means paying the full fee again every two years.

What is the Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam format?
Google states the format as 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions in two hours. With multiple-select items, a partly correct selection is still a wrong answer, so read every option even when the first one looks right.
You can sit the exam online-proctored from a remote location, or onsite-proctored at a testing center. It is offered in English and Japanese.
Google lists no labs or hands-on tasks for this exam, and the exam guide says coding skills are not assessed directly. Expect scenario questions that ask which Google Cloud service or approach fits a stated requirement on cost, latency, scale or risk.

Professional Machine Learning Engineer passing score
Google does not publish a passing score for this exam, on the certification page or in the exam guide. Any percentage quoted elsewhere is not from Google.
For preparation, that means there is no safe margin to aim for. Plan to cover all six sections, weighted roughly as Google publishes them, and treat any practice score as a map of weak areas rather than a forecast of the result.

What is on the Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam?
The exam guide is dated 1 June 2026 and splits the exam into six sections.
The low-code section covers developing models with BigQuery ML or AutoML on Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and building solutions with Google Cloud AI APIs or foundation models. The collaboration section covers exploring and preprocessing data, prototyping in notebooks such as Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Workbench and Colab Enterprise, and tracking ML experiments.
The two largest sections are about production. Scaling prototypes covers choosing a model for cost, complexity, latency and scalability, training it, and choosing training hardware. Serving and scaling covers serving models and scaling online serving.
Pipelines covers end-to-end ML pipelines and automated retraining. Monitoring covers identifying risks to AI solutions and monitoring, testing and troubleshooting them — together almost a third of the exam is about running models after they are built.
The six sections and their approximate weightings are listed below; the rounded figures in the guide add up to 101%.
- Architecting low-code AI solutions — ~13%
- Collaborating within and across teams to manage data and models — ~16%
- Scaling prototypes into ML models — ~21%
- Serving and scaling models — ~20%
- Automating and orchestrating ML pipelines — ~18%
- Monitoring AI solutions — ~13%

Professional Machine Learning Engineer prerequisites
Google lists the prerequisites as “None”. There is no required prior certification, degree or associate-level exam.
The recommended experience is three or more years of industry experience, including one or more years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud. That is guidance on who the exam is written for, not a condition you have to document before booking.

How long is the Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification valid?
Google’s exam terms state that a professional certification is valid for two years from the date of issue unless the exam description says otherwise, and the certification page sets no other period.
Renewal works through the exam. Google’s renewal FAQ lists no shorter renewal exam for this certification and marks renewal through continuing education as coming soon. The renewal window opens 60 days before the certification becomes inactive, and a successful renewal adds two years. The exam fee and retake policy apply to renewal attempts as well.

Professional Machine Learning Engineer study guide and training
Google’s certification page links the official resources: the exam guide, which is the authoritative list of topics; the Machine Learning Engineer learning path in Google Skills; a set of sample questions; a partner training path for Google Cloud partners; a Cloud OnAir certification-prep webinar; and an official study guide for the certification.
Because Google changed the product names on this exam, check any book or course against the current exam guide. A resource written around Vertex AI naming covers the same ideas, but the exam uses the names in the June 2026 guide.

Professional Machine Learning Engineer vs Professional Data Engineer
Both are Google Cloud professional certifications at $200 for a two-hour exam. The Data Engineer exam has 40 to 50 questions against 50 to 60 here, and Data Engineer offers a shorter renewal exam and a Google Skills renewal route, which this certification does not.
The subject split is clear. Data Engineer is about designing data processing systems, ingesting, storing and preparing data and keeping data workloads running. Machine Learning Engineer starts where the data is ready: building, serving, orchestrating and monitoring models. Google lists neither as a prerequisite for the other.

What Professional Machine Learning Engineer questions look like
The Professional Machine Learning Engineer questions are scenario-based. A typical item describes a team, a dataset and a constraint — latency, cost, data volume, a compliance rule — and asks which Google Cloud service, architecture or next step fits best. Several options are usually workable; one fits the constraint better than the rest.
Google publishes a set of sample questions on the certification page. They are the only questions that come from Google itself, so start there to calibrate the style, and note which product names they use: the exam was updated for the move from Vertex AI to Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
When you review a practice question, the useful work is explaining why each wrong option is wrong. On a design exam, the distractors are often correct services used in the wrong situation — and that is exactly the judgement being tested.

Is the Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer certification worth it?
It is worth it if Google Cloud is where you build or will build ML systems. The exam is about taking models into production on that platform — serving, pipelines, monitoring — rather than about ML theory, so its value is tied to working with Google Cloud.
Weigh the running cost honestly: $200 per attempt, and renewal by sitting the full exam again every two years. Google publishes no salary figures for this certification, so this page does not state one. If you work mainly on another cloud, a provider-neutral portfolio of shipped ML work may tell an employer more.

Exam dumps and Google’s exam terms
Google’s exam terms define everything about the exam — questions, answers, any communication about them — as confidential. They prohibit sharing exam content in any format, including content you memorised, and separately prohibit using or accessing unauthorized exam content shared by someone else, “including content that you find online”. That is a description of a dump.
The listed consequences include invalidating results, revoking any or all certifications and permanently barring a candidate from the programme, with no refund of testing fees. A dump is also a poor bet on its own terms: this exam was recently reworked, so older collections use product names the current exam guide no longer uses.
