What is the IBM AI Engineering certification?

The IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate is an online program created by IBM and delivered on Coursera. Coursera describes it as aimed at data scientists, machine learning engineers, software engineers and other technical specialists who want to get job-ready as an AI engineer.

Despite the word “certification” in most searches, this is not a vendor certification exam. Neither the program page nor the IBM badge page mentions an exam or proctoring. The certificate is earned by completing a series of online courses, and IBM’s badge description states that the earner has completed several machine learning and deep learning projects.

In a learning path it sits after the foundations, not at the start. Coursera labels it intermediate level and highly recommends completing the IBM Data Science or IBM Applied AI Professional Certificate — or both — before starting this one.

How much does the IBM AI Engineering certification cost?

The program page shows no fixed USD price. It offers “Enroll for free” as the entry point, states that the program is included with Coursera Plus — Coursera’s subscription — and notes that financial aid is available.

Because access runs through a Coursera subscription rather than a one-off exam fee, what you pay in total depends on how long you take. Coursera shows the applicable price at checkout; we do not state a figure the program page itself does not.

That makes your pace the main cost factor. Coursera’s headline estimate is 4 months at 10 hours a week, and the listed course hours (see below) are the better guide to whether that is realistic for you.

What is the IBM AI Engineering certificate format? Is there an exam?

The format is a 13-course series, fully online, with a flexible schedule — Coursera states you learn at your own pace. There is no final proctored exam, no exam question count and no exam duration; the program page describes none of those.

The coursework is hands-on. The series includes two project courses — the AI Capstone Project with Deep Learning and the closing Project: Generative AI Applications with RAG and LangChain — alongside labs on Keras, TensorFlow, PyTorch and transformer models.

One inconsistency on the official page is worth knowing before you plan: its FAQ still describes six self-paced courses of four to five weeks each at two to four hours a week, while the course list on the same page shows thirteen. The thirteen-course list is the current structure; the FAQ figure is out of date.

IBM AI Engineering certificate passing score

IBM and Coursera do not publish a passing score for the certificate, because there is no single exam. Completing all courses in the series is the requirement, after which the IBM badge is issued.

For preparation, the realistic risk is not a cut score but the step up in difficulty. The series moves from classical machine learning into deep learning frameworks and then into fine-tuning large language models — if your Python or your maths is shaky, that is where it will show, which is why Coursera recommends the foundational IBM certificates first.

What is in the IBM AI Engineering certificate?

Coursera lists thirteen courses with estimated hours. The listed hours add up to 168 across the series. The first six cover machine learning and deep learning; the last seven cover generative AI, transformers, fine-tuning and retrieval-augmented generation.

The heaviest single courses are Deep Learning with Keras and Tensorflow at 23 hours and Deep Learning with PyTorch at 21 hours.

  • Machine Learning with Python — 20 hours
  • Introduction to Deep Learning & Neural Networks with Keras — 10 hours
  • Deep Learning with Keras and Tensorflow — 23 hours
  • Introduction to Neural Networks and PyTorch — 19 hours
  • Deep Learning with PyTorch — 21 hours
  • AI Capstone Project with Deep Learning — 15 hours
  • Generative AI and LLMs: Architecture and Data Preparation — 6 hours
  • Gen AI Foundational Models for NLP & Language Understanding — 10 hours
  • Generative AI Language Modeling with Transformers — 9 hours
  • Generative AI Engineering and Fine-Tuning Transformers — 8 hours
  • Generative AI Advanced Fine-Tuning for LLMs — 9 hours
  • Fundamentals of AI Agents Using RAG and LangChain — 9 hours
  • Project: Generative AI Applications with RAG and LangChain — 9 hours

IBM AI Engineering prerequisites

There is no formal entry requirement, but Coursera lists recommended experience: working knowledge of Python and Jupyter Notebooks, and high school mathematics or math for machine learning.

Coursera goes further and highly recommends completing the IBM Data Science Professional Certificate, the IBM Applied AI Professional Certificate, or both, before starting. Read that as a strong signal about the level: this program assumes you can already write and run Python in a notebook.

Coursera also recommends taking the courses in the suggested order. The later generative AI courses build on the deep learning material from the first half.

Does the IBM AI Engineering certificate expire?

Neither the Coursera program page nor the IBM Training badge page states an expiry date or renewal requirement. There is no recertification cycle described.

On completion you receive a shareable certificate that can be added to a LinkedIn profile, and an email from Acclaim to claim the IBM digital badge. Coursera notes that some badges are issued almost immediately while others take one to two weeks.

On college credit the page contradicts itself: a “Build toward a degree” section says learning may be recognised for credit if you are admitted to an eligible online degree programme, while the FAQ states that at this time there is no university credit for completing courses in the program. Do not plan on credit without confirming it with the institution.

IBM AI Engineering study materials and training

The official training is the program itself: the thirteen Coursera courses created by IBM, with their labs and projects. There is no separate exam guide or candidate handbook, because there is no separate exam.

If you are not yet at the recommended level, the official preparation IBM points to is its own pair of foundational programs on Coursera — the IBM Data Science and IBM Applied AI Professional Certificates.

Coursera also lets you enrol in a single course from the series. That is a sensible way to test whether the pace and the level suit you before committing to the full program.

IBM AI Engineering vs IBM Generative AI Engineering

IBM offers both on Coursera, and they overlap heavily. The Generative AI Engineering certificate is a 16-course series at beginner level, estimated at 6 months at 6 hours a week. The AI Engineering certificate is a 13-course series at intermediate level, estimated at 4 months at 10 hours a week.

Nine course titles appear in both: Machine Learning with Python, Introduction to Deep Learning & Neural Networks with Keras, and the seven generative AI and RAG courses that close each series. The difference is what surrounds them. The generative AI program starts from AI and Python basics and adds application development with Flask; the AI engineering program goes deeper into Keras, TensorFlow and PyTorch and includes a deep learning capstone.

In short: if you are starting out, the generative AI program assumes less; if you already have Python and data science behind you, the AI engineering program covers more deep learning.
