ITIL 4 Foundation study guide: how to prepare for the exam

ITIL 4 Foundation is 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, closed book, with 65% needed to pass. That makes preparation a matter of knowing the official definitions precisely and recognising them quickly — this study guide sets out what to study, which material is official and how to tell when you are ready.

What an ITIL 4 Foundation exam study guide has to cover

PeopleCert, which runs the ITIL certification scheme, lists the topics of the course and exam on its ITIL 4 Foundation page. Any ITIL 4 Foundation exam study guide worth using covers all of them, not just the ones that are easiest to explain:

  • Service management concepts
  • The service value system
  • The four dimensions of service management
  • The guiding principles
  • The service value chain
  • ITIL practices
  • Continuous improvement
  • Service level agreements
  • Key metrics and performance indicators

The exam you are preparing for

The format is fixed and published: 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, closed book, and a minimum score of 65% — 26 correct answers. That gives you 90 seconds per question, so the exam rewards recognising a definition at once rather than working it out.

PeopleCert states no prerequisites on the ITIL 4 Foundation page, and the exam is offered in 12 languages: English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish and Thai. If English is not your first language, decide early which language you will sit the exam in and learn the terms in that language.

Study material for ITIL Foundation certification: the official sources

The definitions the exam tests come from the official ITIL 4 publication. PeopleCert’s exam bundle — US$690.00 including VAT on 9 October 2026 — contains the exam voucher, the Official eBook and a Learning Resource Kit, so the core study material for ITIL Foundation certification arrives with the exam itself.

The eLearning bundle (US$1,029.00) adds the official eLearning, which PeopleCert describes as “9 hours of interactive content” in self-paced modules with exercises, quizzes and case studies. The eLearning+ bundle (US$1,338.00) adds auto-marked sample papers, an Official Mock Exam and a free exam re-take. Prices vary by currency and region.

For classroom teaching, PeopleCert points to accredited partners through its “Find a local partner” search. A course is optional for Foundation.

A step-by-step ITIL 4 Foundation exam preparation plan

PeopleCert sets no study-hours figure, so plan by stages rather than by a number of hours. This order works for most people preparing on their own:

  • Read the official publication once from start to finish, without trying to memorise — the aim is to see how the service value system, the value chain and the practices fit together.
  • Learn the definitions: the guiding principles, the four dimensions, the value chain activities and the purpose of each practice in the syllabus. Write them out in your own words, then check them against the book.
  • Practise by topic: short question sets on one area at a time, reading the explanation for every option, including the ones you got right.
  • Sit full-length mock exams — 40 questions in 60 minutes — and book the real exam once you score clearly above 65% across all topics, not once on one set.

How to prepare for ITIL Foundation exam questions

To prepare for ITIL Foundation exam questions specifically, learn where one concept ends and the next begins. The wrong options are usually real ITIL terms that sit next to the right one: a guiding principle offered instead of a value chain activity, or one practice offered instead of a neighbouring practice.

That is why explanations matter more than scores in early practice. Certsqill’s ITIL 4 Foundation practice questions are expert-developed, explain every answer option, and give you a readiness score per domain, so you can see which part of the syllabus still costs you points. Access comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

ITIL 4 Foundation exam prep: the final week

Your exam voucher is valid for 12 months from purchase, and rescheduling is free up to 48 hours before the start time; after that PeopleCert charges an administrative fee. Book a date that leaves room to move it.

If you take the exam online, PeopleCert’s FAQ lists what you need: a quiet room with sufficient light and a clean desk, no one else present, a single web camera you can rotate (embedded or external, not a mobile phone), and a broadband connection of at least 4 Mbps. Check your setup before exam day, not on it.

Preliminary results appear on screen when you finish, and PeopleCert announces final results within 2 business days.

ITIL 4 study guide or ITIL 5 study guide?

Before you buy any book, check which version you are booked on. PeopleCert now lists ITIL Foundation (Version 5) alongside ITIL 4 Foundation, and its ITIL FAQ says the two “will run in parallel for a period”, with the current plan to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027.

The exam shape is the same — 40 questions, 60 minutes, closed book, 65% — but the syllabus is not. An ITIL 5 study guide has to cover digital product and service management concepts, value co-creation, the four dimensions of product and service management, the ITIL Value System, the guiding principles, the product and service lifecycle, ITIL’s management practices, continual improvement, and value stream mapping and management.

So an ITIL 4 study guide does not prepare you fully for Version 5, and the other way round. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert offers ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5), which it describes as “a fast, low-cost way to update Foundation-level knowledge”.

Choosing ITIL study guides: what to check

ITIL study guides differ more in accuracy and version than in layout. Before relying on one, check:

  • Version: does it name ITIL 4 Foundation or ITIL Foundation (Version 5) — and is that the exam you booked?
  • Coverage: does it work through every topic PeopleCert lists, including service level agreements and key metrics?
  • Terminology: does it use the official terms exactly? Paraphrased definitions are a common reason for losing points on recognition questions.
  • Practice: does it include questions with explanations, and at least one full set of 40 questions to sit in 60 minutes?

After you pass: renewal

PeopleCert’s ITIL 4 Foundation page states that certification renewal is every 3 years, with 60 CPD points needed for renewal. Alternatively, you can renew by completing another course in the same product suite and passing its exam before the renewal date — and PeopleCert’s ITIL FAQ adds that ITIL 4 certifications are also renewed by passing any ITIL (Version 5) certification.

ITIL 4 Foundation study guide: questions people ask

What is the best ITIL 4 Foundation study guide?

The official ITIL 4 publication is the source of every definition on the exam; PeopleCert includes it as an Official eBook in the exam bundle. Any other ITIL 4 Foundation study guide should follow PeopleCert’s topic list and use the official terms.

Is there an official ITIL Foundation exam guide?

PeopleCert publishes the exam format and topic list on its ITIL 4 Foundation page: 40 questions, 60 minutes, closed book, 65% to pass. That page is the closest thing to an official ITIL Foundation exam guide. Checked 9 October 2026.

What should an ITIL Foundation exam study guide include?

Every topic PeopleCert lists for the version you are sitting, the official definitions word for word, and practice questions with explanations — including at least one full set of 40 questions to sit in 60 minutes.

Is an ITIL foundations study guide the same as an ITIL Foundation study guide?

Yes. “Foundations” is a common misspelling; the exam is ITIL 4 Foundation or ITIL Foundation (Version 5).

How long does ITIL Foundation exam preparation take?

PeopleCert sets no study-hours figure. Its official eLearning lists 9 hours of interactive content; add time for reading and practice, and book the exam when your mock scores are clearly above 65% across all topics.

Do I need a course to prepare for the ITIL Foundation exam?

No. PeopleCert states no prerequisites for ITIL 4 Foundation and sells an exam bundle with the Official eBook for self-study.

Is there an ITIL 5 Foundation study guide?

PeopleCert lists ITIL Foundation (Version 5) with its own syllabus and an Official eBook in its bundles. Make sure any ITIL 5 Foundation study guide covers the Version 5 topics, such as value co-creation and value stream mapping. Checked 9 October 2026.

Can I use an ITIL 4 study guide for the ITIL 5 exam?

Not fully. The format is the same, but the Version 5 syllabus adds topics such as digital product and service management and the product and service lifecycle.

Which ITIL study guide should I use if I am not sure of the version?

Check your exam voucher first. ITIL 4 modules are planned to be sunset on 31 December 2027, so the version on your voucher decides which ITIL study guide you need. Source: PeopleCert ITIL FAQ, checked 9 October 2026.
