What is the ITIL Foundation certification?
ITIL Foundation is the entry-level certification in ITIL, the best-practice framework for IT and digital service management. It is examined by PeopleCert in a 40-question, 60-minute, closed-book exam with a 65% pass mark, and it comes in two current versions: ITIL 4 and ITIL (Version 5).

What is ITIL Foundation certification?
What is ITIL Foundation certification in one sentence: proof that you know the core concepts, vocabulary and practices of ITIL service management. ITIL stands for the Information Technology Infrastructure Library, and Foundation is the first level of its qualification scheme.
PeopleCert runs the scheme. It completed its acquisition of AXELOS — which managed ITIL and PRINCE2 — in 2021, which is why the exam, the official books and the certificates now all come from PeopleCert.

What is ITIL 4 Foundation certification, exactly?
What is ITIL 4 certification at Foundation level? The exam covers the topics PeopleCert lists for ITIL 4 Foundation: service management concepts, the service value system, the four dimensions of service management, the guiding principles, the service value chain, ITIL practices, continuous improvement, service level agreements, and key metrics and performance indicators.
The exam format is published: 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, closed book, a minimum of 65% to pass. PeopleCert states no prerequisites, offers the exam in 12 languages, and requires renewal every 3 years with 60 CPD points or by passing another exam in the same product suite.

ITIL certification meaning: what it says about you
The ITIL certification meaning, for an employer, is narrow and specific: you share the same service management vocabulary as the service desk, change and incident teams, and the people who write the service level agreements. It shows knowledge of a framework, not years of experience running one.
ITIL certification, what is it not? It is not a technical certification in a product, and Foundation is not a management qualification. It is the first step: PeopleCert lists further ITIL modules beyond Foundation for people who want to go deeper.

What is the latest ITIL version?
The latest ITIL version is ITIL (Version 5). PeopleCert lists ITIL Foundation (Version 5) alongside ITIL 4 Foundation, and its ITIL FAQ says the two “will run in parallel for a period”, with the current plan to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027.
Both Foundation exams have the same shape — 40 questions, 60 minutes, closed book, 65% — but different syllabi. Version 5 covers topics such as digital product and service management, value co-creation, the product and service lifecycle and value stream mapping. ITIL 4 Foundation holders can update through ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5), which PeopleCert calls “a fast, low-cost way to update Foundation-level knowledge.”

ITIL certification verification
PeopleCert runs a Certificate Verification Service for employers and anyone else who needs to confirm a certificate. To verify ITIL certification through it, you enter the certificate number exactly as it appears on the certificate (PeopleCert gives the format example GR100000000AA), complete an image verification field and submit.
So for ITIL certification verification you need the certificate number from the candidate — the name alone is not what the form asks for. If you are the candidate, your official results and eCertificate are uploaded to your PeopleCert account after the exam.

ITIL certification logo and digital badge
If you are looking for an ITIL certification logo to show on your CV, profile or email signature, the official route is the digital badge. PeopleCert’s FAQ says the badge is issued automatically when you receive your exam results, and that you can share links, download it and add it to your social media accounts and email signatures.
PeopleCert’s FAQ does not cover using an “ITIL certified” logo outside the badge, so the badge PeopleCert issues is the safe way to display the credential.

Is the ITIL certification worth it?
PeopleCert publishes no salary data and no pass rate, so this page states neither. What can be judged is the trade: on 9 October 2026 PeopleCert showed the exam bundle at US$690.00 including VAT (prices vary by region), the exam is an hour long, there are no prerequisites, and the certificate needs renewing every 3 years.
Is ITIL worth it for you? It is most useful where your organisation, or the employers you are targeting, already run on ITIL terms — service desks, IT operations and service management roles. Where nobody uses the framework, the certificate says less. With Version 5 now listed, also check which version your employer expects before you book.
