ITIL 4 Foundation certification training: the three official routes

PeopleCert’s ITIL 4 Foundation page offers three ways to prepare. Self-study is described as an “option for learners who prefer to prepare for exam success on their own”. The ITIL Official eLearning is the self-paced ITIL 4 Foundation training course, with “9 hours of interactive content” in bite-sized modules, practical exercises, quizzes and case studies. And for classroom ITIL 4 Foundation courses, the page asks “Do you prefer classroom training with an instructor at a training center near you?” and links to a partner search.

Whichever ITIL 4 Foundation certification training you choose, the exam does not change: 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes, closed book, with a minimum required score of 65%. PeopleCert states no prerequisites for it, so a course is a choice rather than an entry condition.

On 9 October 2026 PeopleCert’s shop showed three bundles. Prices vary by currency and region — on 24 September the same shop showed the exam bundle at €644.00 including VAT.

ITIL certification online: training and exam without a classroom

The whole route can now be done remotely. ITIL training online comes through the official eLearning, and the exam through PeopleCert’s online proctoring from home. An online ITIL certification is the same ITIL 4 Foundation certification as one earned after a classroom course — the preparation route is not part of the credential.

PeopleCert’s ITIL certification training online is the eLearning bundle or the eLearning+ bundle; the official online ITIL Foundation course is the same 9-hour eLearning in both. Self-paced ITIL Foundation online training suits people who study in short sessions. If you prefer online ITIL Foundation training with a teacher, ask an accredited partner whether it runs its ITIL certification online training live or only in a classroom.

Choosing an ITIL online course: what to check

Online ITIL courses differ more in what they include than in what they teach. When you compare ITIL training courses online, or weigh an ITIL certification online course against a classroom one, put each through these checks before paying:

• Which version does it teach — ITIL 4 or ITIL (Version 5) — and does the exam voucher match it?
• Is the exam voucher included, or bought separately from PeopleCert?
• Does it include practice under exam conditions, such as an official mock exam or sample papers?
• Is the provider one of PeopleCert’s accredited training organisations? For Foundation this is optional; for higher modules it matters, as the next sections show.

Taking the ITIL Foundation exam online

PeopleCert offers online proctored exams that you take from home, which is what makes an ITIL online certification possible from start to finish. Its FAQ lists what you need: “A quiet room with sufficient light and a clean desk. No other persons are allowed to be present in the room”, a single web camera you can rotate (embedded or external, no mobile phone), and a broadband connection of at least 4 Mbps.

You get a preliminary result on screen as soon as you finish the ITIL Foundation test online, and PeopleCert announces final results within 2 business days. Exam vouchers are valid for 12 months after purchase. PeopleCert’s Take2 re-sit service “is available exclusively through Online Proctoring and is enabled only if the initial exam result is a fail.”

ITIL training levels: from Foundation to Master

Foundation is the first of the ITIL training levels. PeopleCert’s qualification scheme lists five designations: ITIL Foundation, ITIL Managing Professional, ITIL Strategic Leader, ITIL Practice Manager and ITIL Master. To reach ITIL Master you must first hold the Managing Professional, Practice Manager and Strategic Leader designations.

ITIL Managing Professional courses build on Foundation. In the current scheme, PeopleCert shows the Managing Professional row with the ITIL Transformation, ITIL Product, ITIL Service and ITIL Experience modules. Unlike Foundation, ITIL Managing Professional training and the other advanced modules carry entry conditions.

ITIL CDS training is a good example. ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support requires “Any ITIL v3 certification or ITIL 4 Foundation or ITIL 4 Managing Professional Certificate” and “Training through an Accredited Training Organization or ITIL Official eLearning” — PeopleCert adds that “Exam results will not be released without proof of completion.” Its exam is 40 questions in 90 minutes, closed book, with 70% to pass.

Who runs the ITIL certification program

The ITIL certification program is run by PeopleCert. In 2021 PeopleCert completed its acquisition of AXELOS, the company that managed the portfolio of best-practice methods that includes ITIL and PRINCE2. That is why searches for AXELOS ITIL training now lead to PeopleCert’s pages and its accredited partners.

Whatever ITIL training program you pick, the certificate comes from passing PeopleCert’s exam. A course can prepare you for it; it cannot replace it.

ITIL 4 or ITIL (Version 5): which training to choose

PeopleCert now lists ITIL Foundation (Version 5) alongside ITIL 4 Foundation, under the banner “The new ITIL is here!”. ITIL 5 Foundation training leads to an exam with the same shape — 40 questions, 60 minutes, closed book, 65% — and the ITIL 5 Foundation course in eLearning form also lists 9 hours of content. The bundles were priced the same as ITIL 4’s on 9 October 2026.

The content differs. ITIL 5 training covers digital product and service management, value co-creation, the product and service lifecycle and value stream mapping, where ITIL 4 Foundation covers the service value system, the four dimensions of service management and the service value chain. Beyond Foundation, ITIL 5 courses such as ITIL Product, ITIL Service, ITIL Experience, ITIL Strategy and ITIL Transformation (Version 5) are listed.

ITIL 4 training has not been withdrawn yet: PeopleCert still lists ITIL 4 Foundation and the ITIL 4 courses beyond it — the Specialist, Strategist and Practitioner modules. PeopleCert’s ITIL FAQ does, however, state that “the current plan is to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027”. An ITIL 4 training course therefore still leads to a current certification, and if your employer asks for ITIL v4 training specifically, that is what to book. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert offers ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5), which upgrades you by passing a short exam.

The practical rule: decide on the version first, then buy matching ITIL 4 certification training or a Version 5 course, each with the voucher for the same version. An ITIL 4 Foundation certification course and a Version 5 voucher do not fit together.

ITIL v3 training, ITIL Expert and Intermediate

PeopleCert’s certification filter offers only two versions, ITIL 4 and ITIL (Version 5), and its catalogue lists no ITIL v3 exam. ITIL v3 now appears only as a designation people already hold: the ITIL MPT–Product, Service, Experience (Version 5) module is described as a way to “upgrade your ITIL v3 Expert, ITIL v3 Master, ITIL 4 Managing Professional or ITIL 4 Master designation”.

So ITIL v3 training is useful today only as background; a new ITIL v3 certification is not something PeopleCert lists. The same goes for ITIL Expert training — ITIL v3 Expert is one of the existing designations the upgrade module names — and for anyone looking for ITIL Intermediate training online: PeopleCert lists no Intermediate exam. If you hold ITIL v3 Expert, the upgrade module above is the official path into the current scheme.

Free ITIL training and certification: what is actually free

PeopleCert lists no free ITIL certification. The exam is sold in paid bundles, starting with the exam bundle above, and the certificate is only issued after passing it.

Searches for free ITIL training and certification therefore mix up two things. Learning material can be free; the certificate is not. If you find ITIL certification training free of charge, check what it actually covers — which version, whether it follows the official syllabus — and remember that the exam voucher still has to be bought from PeopleCert or a partner.

What the best ITIL training has in common

There is no official ranking of providers, so “best ITIL training” comes down to fit and to a few checkable facts. Whether you are comparing an ITIL Foundation course, a full ITIL 4 Foundation certification training course or a short ITIL 4 Foundation exam training session before the test, look for:

• Official materials: PeopleCert’s bundles include the Official eBook and Learning Resource Kit; an ITIL Foundation certification course without them should explain what it uses instead.
• Exam fit: an ITIL Foundation training and exam package should name the version of the voucher it includes.
• Practice: an ITIL certification training course is stronger with timed practice — PeopleCert’s eLearning+ bundle includes sample papers and an Official Mock Exam.
• Path beyond Foundation: if you plan advanced modules, an accredited ITIL Foundation training course keeps your next step simple, because modules such as CDS require accredited training or the official eLearning.
