Okta Certified Consultant: the OKCON1 hands-on exam
To become an Okta Certified Consultant you now pass one exam: OKCON1, the Okta Certified Consultant Hands-On Configuration Exam. It costs US$250, runs 180 minutes in two parts — 47 multiple-choice items, then four hands-on use cases — and requires an active Okta Certified Administrator certification. What is an Okta Certified Consultant?
Okta Certified Consultant is one of Okta’s core certifications, above Okta Certified Professional and Okta Certified Administrator. Okta describes certified consultants as technically proficient at implementing the Okta service in a variety of configurations — the person who designs and builds an Okta rollout for a customer, not just the one who administers it day to day.
Okta recommends five or more years in identity and access management and at least one year of hands-on Okta implementation experience before you attempt it.

The old Okta Consultant exam was discontinued
Okta’s original Okta Consultant Certification Exam, a multiple-choice test, was discontinued on 1 June 2024 and is no longer available. Okta now directs candidates to the Okta Certified Consultant Hands-On Configuration Exam (OKCON1) as the way to earn the certification.
If you find a study guide or practice material for the old Consultant exam, it describes a format that no longer exists. The current exam adds a hands-on part in which you configure a live Okta org.

How much does the Okta Certified Consultant exam cost?
OKCON1 costs US$250, plus tax where applicable. Each retake costs US$100, according to both the study guide and the Okta Certification Program Handbook.
Count the prerequisites in the budget too: you need an active Okta Certified Administrator certification, so if you do not hold it, that exam comes first.

OKCON1 exam format
The exam has two separately timed parts, 180 minutes in total. Part I gives you 60 minutes for 47 Discrete Option Multiple Choice (DOMC) items. Part II gives you 120 minutes for four performance-based, hands-on use cases. The exam includes two case studies that many questions refer to, and some Part II tasks require an email address you can access from your exam system.
DOMC is a different item type from classic multiple choice, and Okta links a separate explanation of it from the study guide. Okta recommends the free standard practice exam to get used to the item type before exam day.
You take OKCON1 online from a remote location, proctored by ProctorU, in English.

What is on the Okta Consultant exam?
Part I is weighted across eight implementation domains. Custom configuration, advanced SSO and policies carry almost half the multiple-choice score between them.
- Implementing Custom Configuration Options with Okta — 19%
- Implementing Advanced SSO Strategies — 15%
- Implementing Okta Policies — 15%
- Implementing Directory Solutions — 13%
- Implementing Inbound Federation with Okta — 13%
- Working with API Access Management — 11%
- Implementing Advanced Sourcing — 8%
- Working with Okta APIs — 6%

The four hands-on use cases in Part II
Part II has four use cases of 25% each. You work in an Okta org and are scored on the result, so working quickly in the org matters as much as knowing the concept.
- App Integrations — create an app integration from the OIN or a custom one
- Creating a Custom Admin — build a custom administrator role and assign apps to users and groups
- Configuring Policies — set up authentication policies
- Creating Routing Rules — create and assign routing rules

Okta Certified Consultant prerequisites
The OKCON1 exam page states that an active, unexpired Okta Certified Administrator certification is required. The current study guide goes further and lists active Okta Certified Professional and Okta Certified Administrator certifications, plus completion of the recommended training or self-study.
Okta’s two pages differ on whether Professional is also required. The safe reading is to hold both, active, before you register — and to check that neither will expire before your exam date.

Official Okta Consultant study materials
The study guide names two Okta learning paths: Configure Role-Based and Attribute-Based Access Control with Okta, and Set Up Enterprise Inbound Federation, which is only available with Okta’s Expert Learning Pass. Partners can access the training at no cost through the Okta Learning Portal.
For practice, Okta offers a free Okta Consultant Standard Practice Exam and a deeper Okta Consultant Premier Practice Exam. The study guide is updated frequently and is based on Okta Identity Engine, so re-read it shortly before you book.

Okta Consultant passing score, exam rules and renewal
Okta does not publish cut-scores. Its handbook states that results are disclosed as pass or fail only, and that for the Consultant exam the result arrives by email within ten business days.
If you fail, you can retake after 24 hours the first time; after each further failure the wait is 14 days. A passed exam cannot be retaken.
Okta’s handbook explicitly prohibits using “brain-dump” materials, actual exam questions or other unauthorised published exam content. Sanctions can include denial of the certification for up to 12 months, a ban of at least six months on registering for any Okta exam, and a permanent ban for repeat violators.
Once certified, you renew every 24 months. Okta offers an unproctored maintenance exam for the Consultant certification that renews it for another 24 months; earning a higher-level certification in that period also counts.
