Okta Certified Professional: the performance exam, cost and study guide
Okta Certified Professional is the certification at the start of Okta’s core path for working with the Okta identity service. You earn it by passing the OKPRO1 Okta Certified Professional Performance Exam: six hands-on use cases in 2 hours 30 minutes, taken online with a remote proctor, for US$250 plus tax. There are no prerequisites, Okta publishes no cut score, and the certification must be renewed every 24 months. The older Hands-On Configuration Exam was discontinued on 1 June 2024.

What is the Okta Certified Professional certification?
The Okta Certified Professional certification is the first level of Okta’s core certification path. The exam tests everyday administration tasks in Okta: creating users and groups, adding applications from the Okta Integration Network, setting up provisioning, enforcing authentication policies and troubleshooting sign-in problems.
Okta lists no prerequisites for it. Okta recommends at least one year of experience in a technical role focused on security and identity management and at least three months of hands-on work with the Okta service before you attempt the exam.
It is also the entry point to the next level: the Okta Certified Administrator Performance Exam requires an active, unexpired Okta Professional certification.

Status: which Okta Certified Professional exam is current?
Okta has retired two earlier Professional exams. The current route is the OKPRO1 Okta Certified Professional Performance Exam. Its predecessors are no longer available in English:
- Okta Certified Professional Hands-On Configuration Exam — discontinued on 1 June 2024
- Okta Professional Certification Exam — retired on 31 March 2022

The Okta Certified Professional performance exam
The Okta certified professional performance exam has six performance-based, hands-on use cases. In each, you complete configuration or troubleshooting tasks or answer questions about what you see. You have 150 minutes and there is no scheduled break: you can ask the proctor for a short one, but the timer keeps running.
You take it online with a remote proctor, in English. During the exam you may use the Okta Help Center, and you need Okta Verify on your phone, which may only be used for tasks that require it.
The exam costs US$250 plus tax where applicable. Results are pass or fail only; Okta does not publish cut scores because they are set statistically and the questions change over time. Results are emailed within 10 business days.

What is on the Okta Certified Professional exam?
Okta’s study guide gives each of the six use cases a weight. Security enforcement alone — authenticators, enrollment policies, global session policy, authentication policies and self-service password recovery — is 38% of the Okta certified professional exam.
- Security enforcement — 38%
- Account creation and user management — 26%
- Troubleshooting — 12%
- Application setup with the Okta Integration Network (OIN) — 10%
- Attribute mapping and offboarding — 8%
- System Log and Okta support — 6%

Okta Certified Professional study guide
Okta publishes an official Okta certified professional study guide for the performance exam. It lists every task within the six use cases and links each to an Okta Learning path — for example Define Your Users in Okta, Organize Users with Groups, Create App Integrations, Automate User Provisioning, Implement Security Policies, Manage Network Zones and Monitor your Okta Org.
Work through the guide in a real Okta org, not only on paper. Every use case is hands-on, so practise each task — creating a group rule, building an authentication policy, deactivating a user and confirming app access is blocked — until you can do it without looking it up.

Okta Certified Professional hands-on configuration exam study guide
If you are looking for the Okta certified professional hands-on configuration exam study guide, note that the English exam it belongs to was discontinued on 1 June 2024. That exam had two parts: 15 discrete option multiple choice items in 30 minutes, then four hands-on use cases in Okta preview orgs in 120 minutes.
Okta’s core exams page still lists a Japanese-language Hands-On Configuration exam as a route to the certification. For the English route, use the Performance Exam study guide instead.

Okta Certified Professional training
For Okta certified professional training, Okta strongly recommends its Okta Professional Series Learning Plan or the Okta Foundations for Administrators instructor-led course. Beyond that, the Okta Help Center, the Okta Content Library and the Okta Community are the official references Okta points to.
Okta does not publish training prices on the exam page. Training is recommended, not required, and three months of hands-on work in Okta is the experience Okta recommends alongside it.

Okta Certified Professional practice exam
Okta offers two kinds of official practice. The Okta Professional Performance Practice Exam is free and is designed to help you prepare for the performance exam. Premier Practice Exams are paid: an unproctored online exam that gives you seven attempts for US$75.
Take the free Okta certified professional practice exam early to see the format, and use repeated hands-on practice in an org for the weakest use cases — especially security enforcement, at 38%.

Retakes, renewal and exam rules
If you fail, you can retake the exam after 24 hours the first time and after 14 days for each later attempt; each retake costs US$100. Okta’s certification lasts 24 months. You renew it by passing the unproctored certification maintenance exam, or by passing the Okta Certified Administrator exam.
Okta’s Code of Conduct prohibits sharing, copying, reconstructing or selling exam content and bans using brain-dump or other unauthorised material. Sanctions include denying certification for up to 12 months and barring a candidate from Okta exams for at least six months.

Okta Certified Professional vs Okta Certified Administrator
The Administrator is the next step and requires an active Okta Professional certification. Its performance exam takes 2 hours 45 minutes — 15 multiple-choice questions, then four hands-on use cases — and Okta recommends two or more years in a technical security or identity role. Both exams cost US$250.
