Phlebotomy certification exam: how long it takes and how long it lasts
How long it takes to get phlebotomy certified depends on your route: training requirements run from 80 hours in California to 120 classroom hours plus clinical draws for AMT, and most work routes ask for one year of experience (AMT counts 1,040 hours). The exam itself takes 2 to 3 hours, results arrive between immediately and four business days, and certifications must be renewed every one to three years.

Phlebotomy certification: how long does it take?
Certifying bodies set training in hours, not weeks, so the honest answer to how long is a phlebotomy course is the number of hours your route requires:
- AMT education route: at least 120 didactic clock hours, plus 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.
- AMT work-based route: 40 classroom hours plus 160 hours of guided work experience, which AMT equates to 4 weeks of full-time employment.
- California CPT I: 40 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of clinical practice for applicants without experience.
- Work-experience routes: NHA accepts 1 year of supervised work in the last 3 years; ASCP and NCCT ask for 1 year of full-time experience; AMT asks for 1,040 hours in the last 3 years.

How long does it take to get phlebotomy certification results?
How long to get a phlebotomy certification after the exam mostly comes down to score reporting. AMT shows your score moments after you finish, and NCCT gives results immediately. At NHA, a test taken at your school gives a preliminary report straight away, while results from a PSI test center or remote session arrive within 48 hours. ASCP emails you to view your score within four business days.
Passing is set on each body’s scale: NHA requires 390 on a 200 to 500 scale, ASCP 400 on 100 to 999, and NCCT 575 on 200 to 720. AMT does not state its passing score on the pages we checked.

If you do not pass: retake waiting periods
A failed attempt adds weeks, so factor the waiting periods into your plan:
- NHA: at least 30 days between attempts, three attempts in total, full exam price each time.
- ASCP: a new eligibility period starts no earlier than 30 days after your last exam; up to five attempts per eligibility route.
- AMT: retake after 45 days; a lifetime limit of four attempts per certification.
- NCCT: 30 days before the second and third attempts, 90 days before the fourth, 180 days after that.

How long does it take to get a phlebotomy license?
Where a state license exists, it comes after the national exam. In California, the CPT I certificate requires state-approved training (40 classroom and 40 clinical hours if you have no experience, or 20 hours of advanced classroom training if you already have 1,040 hours on the job) and a passed national certification exam, followed by an application to the Department of Public Health.
So how long does it take to get your phlebotomy license? Training plus exam plus state processing. CDPH does not publish a processing time on the certificate page we checked, so allow for it before you accept a start date.
