Phlebotomy certification requirements
The requirements for phlebotomy certification are set by each certifying body, but they follow one pattern: a high school diploma or equivalent, a recent phlebotomy training program or qualifying work experience, and documented draws, from 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks at NHA to 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures at AMT and NCCT. Some states, such as California, add a state license.

Phlebotomy certification requirements by certifying body
Each national exam has its own eligibility routes. You only need to meet one route at the body you choose:
- NHA (CPT): high school diploma or equivalent, plus either a phlebotomy training program within the last 5 years or supervised work experience (1 year within 3 years, or 2 years within 5 years), with at least 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks on live individuals.
- ASCP (PBT): high school graduation or equivalent, plus one of seven routes, including a NAACLS-accredited or two-part structured program within 5 years, 1 year of full-time clinical experience, RN or LPN education, or a California-approved program.
- AMT (RPT): 120 didactic clock hours in an approved program, 40 classroom hours plus 160 hours of work-based learning, 1,040 hours of work experience, or 3 years of teaching, each with 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures.
- NCCT (NCPT): a program at an NCCT-authorized school (current student or graduate within 5 years), 1 year of full-time US work experience, or military training, with 50 venipunctures and 10 capillary punctures.

Phlebotomy education requirements
The baseline education is high school. NHA asks for a high school diploma or GED or equivalent, every ASCP route requires high school graduation or its equivalent, and California asks for a transcript from an accredited US high school or a GED, HiSET or CHSPE.
Beyond that, phlebotomy education requirements are about training, not degrees. ASCP also accepts RN, LPN or other accredited allied health education, and holders of its MLS or MLT certification, as routes into the PBT exam.

Phlebotomy requirements for hands-on draws
Every training route asks you to prove you can actually draw blood, and the numbers differ:
- NHA: at least 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks on live individuals.
- AMT: at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources.
- NCCT: 50 venipunctures and 10 capillary punctures; in Louisiana, 100 venipunctures and 25 capillary punctures.
- ASCP Route 6: 100 successful unaided non-donor blood collections for holders of the DPT(ASCP) certification.
- California CPT I: at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures, plus observation of arterial punctures.

Requirements for phlebotomy license: the California example
Where a state license exists, its requirements sit on top of national certification. California issues three certificates: Limited Phlebotomy Technician (skin punctures only), CPT I (adds venipuncture) and CPT II (adds arterial puncture). For a CPT I you must have passed a national certification exam from an approved organization, and your training depends on your experience:
- Less than 40 hours of on-the-job experience: 40 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of clinical practice in a CDPH-approved program.
- 40 to under 1,040 hours in the past 5 years: 40 hours of classroom training plus at least 40 hours of clinical experience in the last 5 years.
- 1,040 hours or more in the past 5 years: 20 hours of advanced classroom training.

How to get phlebotomy license and certification: step by step
Here is how to become phlebotomy certified and, where your state requires it, licensed:
- Check your state’s rules first. In California, the approved certifying organizations are ACA, AMCA, AMT, ASCP, NCCT/MMCI and NHA.
- Choose a certifying body and a route you can meet.
- Complete the training program or work experience, and keep records of every supervised venipuncture and skin puncture.
- Apply for the exam, pay the fee and schedule the test.
- After passing, apply for the state certificate if your state issues one.

How to become certified in phlebotomy with work experience
If you already draw blood at work, you may not need a training program. NHA accepts 1 year of supervised work in the last 3 years, or 2 years in the last 5. ASCP accepts 1 year of full-time acceptable clinical experience, NCCT 1 year of full-time verifiable work experience in the US, and AMT 1,040 hours in the past 3 years. Each still expects the minimum number of documented draws.
