Phlebotomy classes, courses and certification programs

Phlebotomy classes count towards certification only if they meet the certifying body’s rules: AMT asks for at least 120 classroom hours, California requires 40 hours of classroom and 40 hours of clinical training, and NHA, AMT and NCCT all require documented venipunctures and skin punctures. Review courses from certifying bodies help you prepare, but they do not replace that training.

What a phlebotomy certification program has to include

Each certifying body defines which phlebotomy certification programs qualify you for its exam. The common thread is a recent program plus documented hands-on draws:

  • NHA (CPT): a phlebotomy technician training or education program completed within the last 5 years, with at least 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks on live individuals.
  • AMT (RPT): an approved program of at least 120 didactic clock hours within the past 4 years, or 40 classroom hours plus 160 hours of guided work-based learning, each with 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources.
  • ASCP (PBT): a NAACLS-accredited phlebotomy program, an acceptable two-part structured program, or a program approved by the California Department of Public Health, each within the last 5 years.
  • NCCT (NCPT): a phlebotomy technician program at an NCCT-authorized school, as a current student or a graduate within the last 5 years.

Accredited phlebotomy course or approved program: what the words mean

An accredited phlebotomy course is only meaningful if the accreditation is one your certifying body names. ASCP’s Route 1 asks for a program accredited by NAACLS, its Route 7 for a program approved by the California Department of Public Health, and NCCT asks for an NCCT-authorized school. A school that is simply licensed to operate is not automatically on any of those lists.

Before you enroll, ask the school in writing which certification exams its graduates are eligible for, and confirm it on the certifying body’s own eligibility page. The same check applies to certificate programs for phlebotomy that end with the school’s own completion certificate rather than a national exam.

Phlebotomy classes in California

California sets the clearest training standard. A state-approved program must provide 40 hours of didactic instruction and 40 hours of practical instruction in a clinical setting. CPT I students must complete at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures, on patients of varying ages, health and obesity status; Limited Phlebotomy Technician students complete 25 skin punctures.

So how long is phlebotomy class training in California? At least 80 hours across classroom and clinic for a CPT I. The state does not publish a length in weeks, because schedules differ from program to program.

Online classes for phlebotomy: what can and cannot be online

Classroom theory can be taught in many formats, but no phlebotomy technician course can put the draws online. NHA requires 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals, and AMT counts punctures from human sources only. California’s training page does not address whether the 40 didactic hours may be delivered online, so ask CDPH or the program before you rely on it.

A phlebotomy tech class advertised as fully online should tell you exactly where and how its clinical draws happen. If it cannot, the certificate it issues will not get you into a national exam.

Review courses on phlebotomy from certifying bodies

Some courses on phlebotomy come from the certifying bodies themselves and are built for exam review, not eligibility. AMT’s Fundamentals for Phlebotomy Technicians bundle has an introduction module, six content modules and two attempts at the RPT practice exam, costs $150 and must be finished within 180 days of purchase. AMT describes it as a review course to help you prepare for the RPT exam.

NHA offers a CPT online study guide and practice tests, and ASCP sells its own study guide and practice exam. Use these after or alongside your phlebotomy course, not instead of it.

Free phlebotomy courses and a free phlebotomy class

None of the certifying bodies we checked lists a free phlebotomy class or a free course that makes you eligible for its exam. What they do give away is the exam blueprint: NHA publishes a free CPT test plan, and ASCP publishes free content guidelines, topic outlines and reading lists for all its credentials.

If you see free phlebotomy courses advertised, check whether they include supervised clinical draws and which exam they qualify you for. Without both, they are background reading.

Checking your readiness after the phlebotomy course

Phlebotomy classes teach the skill; practice under exam conditions tells you whether you are ready for the written test. Certsqill’s phlebotomy question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per exam area.

Phlebotomy training & courses: questions people ask

What are classes for phlebotomy certification supposed to cover?

Classroom theory plus supervised draws. California requires 40 didactic and 40 clinical hours with 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures for a CPT I. Source: CDPH, checked 19 October 2026.

How many hours is a phlebotomy course for the AMT exam?

At least 120 didactic clock hours on the education route, or 40 classroom hours plus 160 hours of work-based learning, each with 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures. Source: AMT, checked 18 October 2026.

Can I take a phlebotomy certificate program completely online?

Not if you want a national exam: NHA requires 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals, so the clinical part has to happen in person. Source: NHA, checked 18 October 2026.

Do certifying bodies offer free phlebotomy courses?

Not on the pages we checked. NHA’s CPT test plan and ASCP’s content guidelines are free exam outlines, not courses. Checked 18 and 19 October 2026.

Is an AMT or NHA review course enough to sit the exam?

No. AMT describes its Fundamentals course as a review to help you prepare; eligibility still needs a qualifying program or work experience. Source: AMT, checked 19 October 2026.

How long is the course for a phlebotomy technician in California?

A CDPH-approved program provides 40 hours of didactic and 40 hours of practical instruction. The state does not publish a length in weeks. Source: CDPH, checked 19 October 2026.
