Phlebotomy certification: exams, requirements and renewal
Phlebotomy certification in the US is earned by passing a national exam from a certifying organization such as NHA (CPT), ASCP (PBT), AMT (RPT) or NCCT (NCPT). Each sets its own eligibility, usually a training program with documented venipunctures and skin punctures or work experience. The exams run from 2 to 3 hours, and some states, such as California, also require a state phlebotomy certificate on top.

What is phlebotomy certification?
A phlebotomy certification shows that you passed a certifying organization’s exam for phlebotomy technicians, the people who draw blood, prepare specimens for testing and verify patient identity. There is no single national phlebotomy certification run by the federal government. Instead, several national bodies each award their own credential, and employers and states decide which ones they accept.
California’s Department of Public Health lists the certifying organizations it accepts: the American Certification Agency (ACA), the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT/MMCI) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). If you want to be certified in phlebotomy and keep your options open across states, a credential from one of these bodies is the safe choice.
Keep the words apart: a phlebotomy technician certification comes from a certifying body after an exam, while a phlebotomy certificate can also mean a state document (California issues one) or a school’s completion certificate.

NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification
The NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification had 133,234 active holders at the end of 2024, according to NHA. The CPT phlebotomy certification exam has 100 scored items plus 20 unscored pretest items and a 2-hour limit. You can sit it at your school, at a PSI testing center or by live remote proctoring.
NHA’s 2025 test plan, based on a job analysis completed in 2024, splits the 100 scored items into five domains:
- Safety and Compliance — 26 items
- Patient Preparation — 20 items
- Routine Blood Collections — 28 items
- Special Collections — 12 items
- Processing — 14 items

NHA phlebotomy exam scoring and retakes
NHA reports scaled scores from 200 to 500, and you need 390 or higher to pass. Results from a PSI test center or remote session arrive within 48 hours; at a school, a preliminary report is available as soon as you finish. Remote sessions allow no breaks.
You get three attempts, with at least 30 days between attempts, and each retake means registering again and paying the full exam price. In 2024 NHA administered 57,457 CPT exams, of which 75.96% were passed.

ASCP Phlebotomy Technician, PBT(ASCP)
The ASCP Board of Certification exam for phlebotomy technicians has 80 questions in 2 hours. Every question is multiple choice with four options and one best answer, and the exam is taken at Pearson testing centers. ASCP scores on a scale of 100 to 999 with a minimum passing score of 400, and you are emailed to view your score within four business days.
The application fee is $155 and is non-refundable. You may sit the exam up to five times under one eligibility route, and a new eligibility period begins no earlier than 30 days after your previous exam date. ASCP lists seven eligibility routes, from a NAACLS-accredited program to one year of full-time clinical experience or a program approved by the California Department of Public Health.

AMT Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT)
AMT’s RPT exam has the most questions of the four: 200 questions in 2.5 hours. The largest content area is obtaining blood samples (68 items, 34%), followed by specimen collection and processing and by safety standards and procedures (30 items each). You schedule at a Pearson VUE test center unless your school arranges the exam.
The fee is $125 and covers the application, the exam and the first annual fee. Your score appears moments after you finish. If you fail, you can retake after 45 days, up to a lifetime limit of four attempts for the certification, with a retesting fee. AMT does not state a passing score on the pages we checked.

NCCT National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT)
NCCT’s NCPT exam has 100 scored items and 25 unscored pretest items, and you have three hours. The 2025 test plan covers infection control and safety, preparing for specimen collection, specimen collection, collection complications and troubleshooting, and law and ethics. The exam fee is $119.
NCCT reports scores from 200 to 720 with the pass point at 575, and results are given right after the exam. After a failed attempt you wait at least 30 days for the second and third attempts, 90 days for the fourth and 180 days for later attempts.

How to get a phlebotomy certification
Here is how to get certified in phlebotomy. The path is the same in outline at every certifying body. The details, such as how many sticks you must document, differ, and the requirements page breaks them down.
- Finish high school or an equivalent (NHA and ASCP require it).
- Complete a phlebotomy training program, or build the supervised work experience a certifying body accepts.
- Document your hands-on draws: NHA asks for 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals; AMT and NCCT ask for 50 venipunctures and 10 skin or capillary punctures.
- Pick a certification exam for phlebotomy, apply and pay, then schedule your test.
- Pass the exam, then check whether your state also requires a phlebotomy license or certificate.

Phlebotomy license vs certification
Certification is national and comes from a certifying body. A phlebotomy license, where it exists, comes from a state. California is the clearest example: its Department of Public Health issues three phlebotomy certificates. A Limited Phlebotomy Technician may do skin punctures only, a CPT I may also do venipuncture, and a CPT II may additionally do arterial punctures.
To get a California CPT I you need state-approved training and must have passed a national certification exam from one of the organizations CDPH accepts. So in California the national phlebotomy certification exam is a step towards the state certificate, not a replacement for it. Rules differ by state, so check with your state health department before you assume you need a license for phlebotomy or that you do not.

Phlebotomy certification renewal and phlebotomy license renewal
Every credential here must be maintained. NHA certifications are renewed every two years with 10 continuing education credits, and an expired certification can be reinstated within one year. ASCP’s PBT runs on a three-year credential cycle with 9 points: 2 in phlebotomy, 1 in laboratory or patient safety, 1 in medical ethics and 5 in related areas, plus a $110 maintenance application fee. AMT requires continuation compliance every three years plus an annual renewal fee, and NCCT requires recertification every year.
A state license renews separately. Since 1 January 2026, California renews all laboratory personnel licenses and certificates for one year at a time, and phlebotomy certificate holders need 3 contact hours of continuing education for each renewal.

Phlebotomy study guide, books and practice kits
The most reliable study guide for phlebotomy is the one published for your exam. NHA offers a CPT online study guide, practice tests and a free CPT test plan that maps the key concepts. ASCP sells a BOC Phlebotomy Study Guide (4th edition) with more than 1,600 study questions, and an interactive practice exam drawing on nearly 1,300 questions; as a bundle they were listed at $109, or $89 for members. Among phlebotomy books, a certifying body’s own guide is the one written against its exam.
A phlebotomy practice kit or practice arm helps you rehearse technique, but it does not count towards eligibility: NHA requires venipunctures and capillary sticks on live individuals, and AMT counts punctures from human sources.

Phlebotomy practice exam options, free and paid
For a free phlebotomy practice test from an official source, start with the free material the certifying bodies publish: NHA’s CPT test plan and ASCP’s free content guidelines and reading lists. They are not banks of phlebotomy exam questions, but they tell you exactly what each exam covers.
Official paid options exist too. If you want an NHA practice test for phlebotomy, NHA offers CPT practice tests with up to six attempts, modeled on the actual exam. AMT sells an RPT practice exam for $30 with 200 questions per attempt and two attempts.

Phlebotomy practice questions
Certsqill’s phlebotomy practice questions are expert-developed and organized by the areas certifying bodies test, from safety and patient preparation to routine and special collections and specimen processing.
Every question comes with an explanation for each answer option, and your results build a readiness score per exam area, so you can see whether order of draw, special collections or processing needs more work before you book your phlebotomy test. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
Phlebotomy questions people ask
Do you need a license for phlebotomy?
It depends on the state. California requires a state phlebotomy certificate from its Department of Public Health; check your own state health department. Source: CDPH, checked 18 October 2026.
Is there one national exam for phlebotomy?
No. NHA, ASCP, AMT and NCCT each run their own national phlebotomy exam, and California accepts several of them for its state certificate. Source: CDPH, checked 18 October 2026.
Can you get phlebotomy certification online?
You can take the NHA CPT exam by live remote proctoring, but NHA still requires documented hands-on draws first: 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on live individuals. Source: NHA, checked 18 October 2026.
Is there a free phlebotomy certification online?
Not from the certifying bodies we checked: ASCP charges $155, AMT $125 and NCCT $119, and NHA charges a fee when you schedule. Free official material is limited to test plans and content guidelines. Checked 18 and 19 October 2026.
Where can I find a free practice test for phlebotomy?
The certifying bodies publish free exam outlines (NHA’s CPT test plan, ASCP’s content guidelines) rather than free full practice tests. NHA and AMT sell official practice tests. Checked 18 and 19 October 2026.
What color tubes are used for which tests in phlebotomy?
NHA’s CPT test plan expects you to match tube color to the laboratory test (its example: blue stopper for coagulation), know tube additives, order of draw, fill levels and inversions, and mix additives according to manufacturer guidelines. Source: NHA CPT Test Plan, checked 18 October 2026.
What are common phlebotomy interview questions?
Expect interview questions for phlebotomy built around the job itself: how you identify patients, follow order of draw, handle a difficult draw or a fainting patient, and keep to safety and infection control. Have real examples from your training draws ready.
Is there a phlebotomy and EKG certification?
Not as one credential at NHA: the Certified EKG Technician (CET) is a separate two-hour exam requiring 10 EKGs on live individuals, renewed every two years like the CPT. Source: NHA, checked 19 October 2026.
What is the NHCO phlebotomy exam?
We found no official exam page for an NHCO phlebotomy exam, and NHCO is not on California’s list of approved certifying organizations. Choose an exam from a body such as NHA, ASCP, AMT or NCCT. Checked 18 and 19 October 2026.
Do I need to renew phlebotomy license and certification separately?
Yes. A national certification renews with its certifying body (NHA every two years, NCCT every year), while California renews its state certificate every year with 3 CE hours. Sources: NHA and CDPH, checked 18 October 2026.
