PMI-PBA certification: requirements, exam and cost
PMI-PBA — PMI Professional in Business Analysis — is PMI’s business analysis certification. To apply you need 36 to 60 months of business analysis experience in the last eight years, depending on your degree, plus 35 contact hours of business analysis education. The exam has 200 questions (175 scored) in 240 minutes. PMI publishes no single price and no passing score, and you renew with 60 PDUs every three years.

What is the PMI-PBA certification?
The PMI PBA certification is the Project Management Institute’s credential for business analysts — the people who assess needs, plan the analysis, elicit and analyse requirements, trace them through delivery and evaluate the result.
Unlike entry-level credentials, PMI-PBA is gated on documented experience: PMI checks your business analysis work and education before you may sit the exam. That makes it a professional-level cert for practising analysts, not a starting point.

PMI-PBA requirements and eligibility
PMI sets three alternative sets of requirements. Every set needs 35 contact hours of business analysis education; what changes with your degree is the amount of experience.
Practitioner experience must have been earned in the last eight years for sets A and B. Plan the documentation carefully: PMI reviews the application, and your experience description is where the requirement is tested.
- Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or equivalent): 60 months as a business analysis practitioner in the last 8 years, plus 35 contact hours
- Bachelor’s degree or higher: 36 months as a business analysis practitioner in the last 8 years, plus 35 contact hours
- Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree from a GAC-accredited programme: at least 24 months of unique, non-overlapping business analysis experience, plus 35 contact hours

How much does the PMI-PBA certification cost?
PMI does not publish a single PMI-PBA exam price on the certification page or in the Handbook. The Handbook states that the fees are subject to membership and regional pricing, and that the member rate applies only to PMI members in good standing. So the amount you pay depends on whether you are a member and where you are.
Plan for two further costs: the 35 contact hours of education, priced by whoever delivers them, and possible retakes — the Handbook states that reexamination fees apply to the second and third attempts, again without printing an amount.

PMI-PBA exam format and passing score
The PMI-PBA exam has 200 multiple-choice questions, of which 175 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest questions. You cannot tell which are which, so every question counts. The time limit is 240 minutes — four hours — or 72 seconds per question.
You can take the test at a Pearson VUE testing centre, which PMI recommends, or securely online. After approval you have a one-year eligibility period and up to three attempts.
PMI does not publish a PMI-PBA passing score; the Handbook says only that the passing score for all PMI exams is determined by sound psychometric analysis. On languages, PMI’s certification page and the Handbook disagree, so confirm the available language when you schedule.

PMI-PBA syllabus: the five domains
The PMI-PBA syllabus is PMI’s Examination Content Outline, with five domains and fixed weights. Analysis dominates at 35%, more than a third of the scored questions; evaluation is the smallest at 10%.
- Needs Assessment — 18%
- Planning — 22%
- Analysis — 35%
- Traceability and Monitoring — 15%
- Evaluation — 10%

PMI PBA certification training, courses and boot camps
PMI PBA certification training is part of the route, not an extra: all three eligibility sets require 35 contact hours of business analysis education before you apply. Whether you choose a self-paced course, a live online class or a short boot camp, check that the provider issues a record of contact hours that PMI will accept and that the course follows the five domains and their weights.
A bootcamp can cover the 35 hours quickly, but the exam is long — 200 questions in four hours — so plan study time after the course as well. PMI does not publish course prices; they are set by each provider.

PMI-PBA study and exam prep
Start your study with the Examination Content Outline, which defines the tasks in each domain, and the PMI-PBA Handbook, which covers application, eligibility, scheduling and retakes. Weight your prep the way PMI weights the exam: analysis first, then planning and needs assessment.
Use practice test questions in two ways: per domain while you learn, and as full timed practice exams to build the stamina for four hours. Aim to pass practice exams comfortably rather than narrowly, since PMI publishes no target score.
PMI-PBA exam dumps are not a shortcut. PMI’s Certification Handbook treats discussing exam questions after the exam as a potential violation of the certification agreement, with consequences up to revocation of your certification or permanent suspension from PMI exams.

PMI-PBA vs CBAP
IIBA’s CBAP is another business analysis certification that gates on experience. CBAP asks for five or more years — 7,500 hours — of business analysis work in the last 10 years and 35 hours of professional development. Its exam has 120 case-study and scenario-based questions in 210 minutes, at US$505, or US$350 for IIBA members.
PMI-PBA can require less experience — 36 months with a bachelor’s degree — but its exam is longer, with 200 questions in 240 minutes. If you already hold PMI certifications and renew them through PDUs, PMI-PBA fits the same renewal system.

Is PMI-PBA worth it? Salary and renewal
PMI publishes no salary figure for PMI-PBA on its certification page, so none is quoted here. Whether it is worth it depends on two things you can check: whether you meet the experience requirement now, and whether business analysis is the career you want to signal to employers.
Keeping it is a three-year commitment: PMI-PBA holders earn 60 professional development units in each three-year cycle through PMI’s continuing certification requirements programme.

PMI-PBA practice questions
Certsqill’s PMI-PBA practice questions are expert-developed: every answer option has an explanation, and a readiness score for each of the five domains shows whether analysis, at 35% of the exam, is ready before you spend an attempt.
