What is the PSD certification?
PSD stands for Professional Scrum Developer, a certification from Scrum.org. Its assessment is PSD I. Scrum.org says that earning PSD proves you have demonstrated an understanding of the fundamentals of applying the Scrum framework — specifically in the work of building and delivering software products.
That focus is what separates PSD from the general Scrum certifications. About 85% of the questions are about developing and delivering products professionally: backlog refinement, cross-functional and self-managed development, design and architecture, programming, quality and testing. The rest covers the Scrum framework itself, developing people and teams, and managing products with agility.
Scrum.org’s matching course is aimed at all members of a Scrum team involved in developing and delivering software-based systems — architects, analysts, programmers, testers and IT operations staff among them.

How much does the PSD certification cost?
The PSD I assessment costs US$200 per attempt. You buy a password, each password is valid for one attempt, and passwords do not expire, so you can buy now and take the assessment when you are ready.
If you attend Scrum.org’s Applying Professional Scrum for Software Development course, the course includes a free attempt at PSD I. Classes are taught by Professional Scrum Trainers, in person or as a Live Virtual Class.
There is no renewal cost. Scrum.org describes PSD as a lifetime certification with no annual renewal fee.

PSD I exam format
The PSD I assessment has 80 questions with a 60-minute time limit — 45 seconds per question on average. Question types are multiple choice, multiple answer and true/false. With that pace, there is little time to look things up; the assessment rewards people who already know the material well.
The assessment is in English. Scrum.org allows candidates to use Google Translate under its instructions, but says it cannot guarantee the quality of the translation.

What is the PSD I passing score?
The passing score is 85%. On 80 questions, that means you can afford to miss at most 12.
Eighty-five percent is a high bar. Because about 85% of the questions come from development practice rather than from the framework alone, knowing the Scrum Guide by heart is not enough on its own.

What is on the PSD exam?
Scrum.org groups the PSD I questions by focus area. About 85% of the questions come from Developing & Delivering Products Professionally, and about 15% from three other competency areas.
In practice, that means most questions are about how a Scrum team builds and delivers software: how work is refined, how design and architecture decisions are made, and what good programming, quality and testing practice looks like within Scrum.
- Developing & Delivering Products Professionally — about 85% (backlog refinement, cross-functional and self-managed development, design and architecture, programming, quality, testing)
- Understanding and Applying the Scrum Framework
- Developing People and Teams
- Managing Products with Agility — these three together about 15%

PSD certification training: the Applying Professional Scrum for Software Development course
Scrum.org’s training for PSD is Applying Professional Scrum for Software Development. It is not required for the assessment, but Scrum.org highly recommends it. In person it is generally delivered over three consecutive days; the Live Virtual Class version may be split into more, shorter days.
The course is intended for all members of a Scrum team involved in developing and delivering software-based systems, and it is taught by Professional Scrum Trainers. Topics include the Scrum framework, the Definition of Done, backlog management, agile architecture, code quality and technical debt, test-driven development, pair programming and using DevOps with Scrum. The course includes a free attempt at PSD I.

How to study for the PSD I assessment
Start with the Scrum Guide, because about 15% of the questions test the framework directly and the rest assume you know it. Then spend most of your time on the development practices listed in the 85% competency area — refinement, design and architecture, programming, quality and testing — and ask of each one how it helps a team produce a done increment every Sprint.
Scrum.org offers free practice through its open assessments. The Scrum Developer Open has 30 questions drawn at random from a larger pool, is free and does not include certification; Scrum.org describes it as useful for those preparing for PSD I. Scrum.org also lists the Scrum Open as practice for PSD. Use them to check pace and wording, not as a substitute for understanding the practices.

Does the PSD certification expire?
No. Scrum.org states that PSD is a lifetime certification with no annual renewal fee, so there are no continuing education units to collect and nothing to renew.
Each attempt needs its own password, though. If you do not pass, a new attempt is a new US$200 purchase unless you have a password from a course.

Who should take the PSD certification?
PSD is aimed at the people who build the product. Scrum.org’s Applying Professional Scrum for Software Development course names architects, analysts, programmers, testers and IT operations staff, as well as Scrum Masters and Product Owners, as its audience — anyone in a Scrum team involved in developing and delivering software-based systems.
Because about 85% of PSD I is about development practice, it reflects day-to-day engineering work inside a Scrum team more than knowledge of the framework alone. If your role is mainly facilitation or product ownership, look at the focus areas first and check that they match the work you do.

PSD practice questions
Certsqill’s PSD I practice questions come with an explanation for every answer option, and readiness is scored per competency area, so you can see whether you are clear of the 85% bar in development practice as well as in the framework.
