PyTorch certification: the PTCA exam, cost and domains
The official PyTorch certification is the PyTorch Certified Associate (PTCA), launched in June 2026 by Linux Foundation Education and the PyTorch Foundation. It is an online, proctored, multiple-choice exam of 120 minutes with no prerequisites. The exam alone costs US$250 and includes one retake and 12 months to sit it; the credential is valid for two years. The Linux Foundation does not publish the number of questions or a passing score.

Your PTCA Readiness Score, not a guess
One number from three signals — coverage, accuracy, and consistency — tells you whether to book the exam or keep studying.
Understand every PTCA mistake
When you miss a question, it explains why — using your own answer history to catch the patterns you keep repeating. Included, no subscription.
Explanations in your language, questions stay exam-accurate
Get every explanation in your language while the questions stay in exam-accurate English. Technical terms stay in English — the way the exam writes them.

Is there an official PyTorch certification?
Yes, since June 2026. On 18 June 2026 the PyTorch Foundation announced that Linux Foundation Education and the PyTorch Foundation had launched the PyTorch Certified Associate, PTCA. It is the certification the project itself stands behind, administered through Linux Foundation Training.
The announcement traces it back to a beta of the PTCA training run at the previous year’s PyTorch Conference. The same post mentions a future PyTorch Certified Developer course without giving details, so for now PTCA is the one PyTorch cert you can actually book.

Who is the PTCA cert for?
The Linux Foundation describes PTCA as designed for early-stage practitioners with some Python and machine learning experience who are beginning to work with PyTorch. Its experience level is listed as beginner, and there are no prerequisites to register.
The certification is meant to show that you understand how models are designed, trained and used in practice with PyTorch — the everyday workflow of tensors, training loops, data pipelines and performance, rather than research-level theory.

How much does the PyTorch certification cost?
Linux Foundation Training lists three ways to buy it. The exam alone costs US$250. The PTCA Certification Pathway, which bundles the four official courses with the exam, costs US$299. The third option, US$495, combines the exam with the THRIVE-ONE annual subscription, which the Linux Foundation says gives access to more than 100 educational products and SkillCreds.
The exam page lists one retake and a 12-month eligibility period, and the pathway page also lists one retake, so a first attempt that goes wrong does not mean paying again, and you do not have to sit the exam right after buying it.

PTCA exam format
The PTCA is an online, proctored, multiple-choice exam. You take it remotely, and the session is supervised by a proctor. The exam lasts 120 minutes.
The Linux Foundation does not publish how many questions the exam has or what score you need to pass. Treat any specific number you see quoted elsewhere with caution; it does not come from the exam owner.
Because there is no published passing score, the useful target is even coverage of the four domains below, weighted the way the Linux Foundation weights them.

What is on the PTCA exam? Domains and weightings
The exam page lists four domains with fixed weightings. PyTorch Fundamentals carries the most weight at 38%: core concepts, tensors, training, testing and using models, and device basics across CPU, CUDA and MPS.
Performance & Optimization is next at 26%, covering precision and execution optimisation, performance measurement and distributed training. That is a notable share for an associate-level exam, and it is the domain beginners most often underestimate.
Model Development (20%) is about PyTorch’s neural network building blocks, and Data Handling (16%) covers datasets, DataLoaders, transforms and training data.
- PyTorch Fundamentals — 38%
- Model Development — 20%
- Performance & Optimization — 26%
- Data Handling — 16%

Official PyTorch certification course: the PTCA Certification Pathway
The official preparation route is the PTCA Certification Pathway from Linux Foundation Training. It contains four online courses that mirror the exam domains: PyTorch Fundamentals (LFD2000), Data Handling in PyTorch (LFD2001), PyTorch Model Development (LFD2002) and Optimizing PyTorch (LFD2003).
Together they add up to 15–17 hours of course material, with 12 months of access to the online courses. The pathway includes the exam and one retake, for US$299 in total.
The PTCA page also points to the free PyTorch documentation, tutorials, basics tutorials and forums. For hands-on practice they are the most direct resource, because the exam tests the same workflows you use in the official tutorials.

How long is the PTCA valid?
The certification is valid for two years from the date you pass, according to both the Linux Foundation exam page and the PyTorch Foundation’s launch announcement.
Neither page describes a renewal process yet. Given how new the certification is, check the Linux Foundation exam page before your two years run out.

How to prepare for the PTCA exam
Start with the domain weightings. More than a third of the exam is fundamentals, so be fluent with tensors, devices and the standard train-test loop before moving on. Then spend real time on performance and optimisation, which carries a quarter of the exam: precision and execution optimisation, measuring performance and the basics of distributed training.
Data handling is the smallest domain but also the most practical one: write your own Dataset, use DataLoaders and transforms, and make sure you understand what each does to a batch. Model development comes down to knowing the standard neural network building blocks and how they fit together.
Because the 12-month eligibility period and the included retake give you room, book a date only once you can work through each domain without looking things up.
