The CCNA exam: topics, format, scheduling and difficulty
The CCNA exam is Cisco’s 200-301, currently version 1.1: a 120-minute, pass/fail exam whose scope is set by six weighted exam topic areas. This page covers what is on it, how it is delivered, how to book it, and the questions Cisco deliberately leaves unanswered — passing score, pass rate and study time.

CCNA exam topics: what the 200-301 exam covers
The CCNA exam topics are Cisco’s official description of what the exam tests. Cisco publishes them for CCNA Exam v1.1 and calls them “general guidelines for the content likely to be included on the exam”, adding that other related topics may also appear and that the guidelines may change at any time without notice. In other words, the Cisco CCNA exam topics define the scope, not a closed list of questions.
There are six areas, each with a weighting. The weighting is the most useful planning number Cisco gives you, because it tells you roughly how much of the exam each area represents:
- Network Fundamentals — 20%
- Network Access — 20%
- IP Connectivity — 25%
- IP Services — 10%
- Security Fundamentals — 15%
- Automation and Programmability — 10%

CCNA exam objectives in practice
Each area breaks down into numbered objectives, and the verbs matter. Some Cisco CCNA exam objectives ask you to explain or describe — for example “Explain the role and function of network components” (1.1) or “Describe characteristics of network topology architectures” (1.2). Others ask you to configure and verify: “Configure and verify VLANs (normal range) spanning multiple switches” (2.1), or “Configure and verify IPv4 and IPv6 static routing” (3.3).
Those configure-and-verify objectives are why Cisco’s own preparation advice stresses lab time with routers and switches, in Cisco Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs. Cisco puts it bluntly on its CCNA training page: “You can’t pass the CCNA by just reading a book.” If you read the Cisco CCNA objectives as a checklist, mark each one only when you can both explain it and do it on a device.
IP Connectivity, at 25%, is the heaviest area. It opens with interpreting the components of a routing table and how a router makes a forwarding decision by default — the kind of reasoning the whole exam leans on.

CCNA syllabus and objectives PDF
Cisco does not call it a syllabus, but the exam topics document is the CCNA syllabus in everything but name. The CCNA objectives PDF is published on Cisco’s learning content site as “CCNA Exam v1.1 (200-301)”; Cisco’s exam page links to the same list as “View CCNA exam topics”.
Before you rely on any CCNA syllabus PDF or CCNA exam objectives PDF you find elsewhere, check its version line. Cisco has published topic documents for 200-301 v1.0 and v1.1, and the current exam is v1.1. A copied list of the CCNA 200-301 exam topics without a version number is the quickest way to study for an exam that no longer exists. Everything else — books, courses, practice questions — should map back to the official exam topics. CCNA material that cannot show that mapping leaves you guessing about coverage.

The CCNA Security syllabus is for a retired certification
Old copies of the syllabus of CCNA Security still circulate, but Cisco’s list of retired certifications shows CCNA Security retiring on 23 February 2020, together with CCNA Routing and Switching. That credential can no longer be earned, so a CCNA Security syllabus describes an exam you cannot book.
Security has not disappeared from the current exam: Security Fundamentals is one of the six 200-301 areas, at 15%. For a dedicated security-operations credential at the associate level, Cisco now offers CCNA Cybersecurity, with its own exam, 200-201.

CCNA test format
The CCNA test format, as Cisco states it: a 120-minute exam, offered in English and Japanese, graded pass/fail, with results available online within 48 hours. Cisco lists no prerequisites.
Cisco does not publish a question count for 200-301, and it does not list the item types on the CCNA page. What you get afterwards is more than a single result: Cisco’s exam policies state that candidates receive a score report with a performance breakout by exam section — useful if you need to retake.

CCNA score to pass, and the pass rate
There is no official CCNA score to pass. Cisco’s exam policies say so directly: “Cisco does not publish exam passing scores because exam questions and passing scores are subject to change.” Any specific number you see quoted as the passing mark does not come from Cisco.
The same applies to a CCNA pass rate. Cisco does not publish one, so we do not state one. A pass rate would not help you much anyway: what decides passing CCNA is whether you are solid across all six topic areas, not how other candidates did.

How hard is the CCNA exam?
How hard is the CCNA exam? Cisco publishes neither a pass rate nor a passing score, so nobody can give you an official difficulty figure. What can be said from Cisco’s own documents is where the difficulty comes from.
First, breadth: six areas from cabling and IPv6 to network automation. Second, depth: many objectives ask you to configure and verify, not just recognise a term. Third, time: 120 minutes for an exam whose question count Cisco does not disclose, so pacing has to be practised rather than calculated. When people ask about CCNA certification difficulty, those three factors are the honest answer.
Is the CCNA exam hard for someone new to networking? There are no prerequisites, so Cisco allows anyone to sit it, and Cisco describes the certification as designed for entry-to-mid-level IT professionals. Starting from zero simply means the study period is longer.

How long to study for CCNA
Cisco does not publish a study-hours figure, and its CCNA training page does not recommend a specific number of hours. How long to study for CCNA depends on where you start: someone who already configures switches at work and someone learning subnetting for the first time are preparing for the same exam from very different places.
A practical way to set your own estimate: go through the exam topics, mark each objective as known, shaky or new, and plan the most time for the new objectives in the heaviest areas. For scale, Cisco describes its CCNA Prep On Demand programme as “packed with 50+ hours of resources, webinars, and practice quizzes” — that is the size of one resource, not a total study time.
How long does it take to get a CCNA certification once you are ready? The exam itself is a single 120-minute sitting, and results appear online within 48 hours. If you fail, Cisco requires you to wait five calendar days, beginning the day after the attempt, before retaking.

CCNA exam schedule and exam dates
There is no fixed Cisco CCNA exam schedule and there are no published CCNA test dates. You choose your own CCNA exam date when you book: Cisco states that in the U.S. and Canada you can schedule your exam up to six weeks in advance and as late as the same day.
How to schedule CCNA exam appointments: written exams are booked through the Cisco Certification Tracking System, which lets you schedule, purchase, reschedule or cancel. Cisco also lists registration by phone with Pearson VUE, or in person at a Pearson VUE test center where available. On Cisco’s 200-301 page for the Cisco CCNA, “Schedule exam” takes you to the scheduling login.
Payment is $US300, or Cisco Learning Credits.

CCNA exam online or at a testing center
You can take the CCNA exam online or in person. Cisco states that “all Associate, Professional, and Expert written exams are offered both in-person and online”, and 200-301 is an associate-level written exam.
If you prefer a CCNA testing center, the exam is delivered by Pearson VUE, which Cisco describes as its partner for administering the exam in a secure, proctored environment. Cisco does not maintain its own list of CCNA exam locations; the available test centers, and therefore the nearest CCNA exam center to you, are shown when you book. For written exams Cisco requires two forms of identification, both with your signature, one of them a government-issued photo ID.

How to pass the CCNA exam
With no published passing score, how to pass the CCNA comes down to coverage. The safe target is being solid in every one of the six areas, with extra depth in IP Connectivity (25%) and in Network Fundamentals and Network Access (20% each).
- Work from the current v1.1 exam topics, objective by objective.
- Do the configure-and-verify objectives on real or simulated devices, not just on paper.
- Use practice questions that explain every option, and track your results per topic area.
- Practise under a 120-minute time limit so pacing is not new on exam day.
- If a retake is needed, use the section breakout on your score report to decide what to study next.

No resource can promise a CCNA pass for sure
Offers that claim you will pass for sure — CCNA “guaranteed” packages, leaked question sets — have nothing official behind them. Cisco’s exam policy treats exam questions, answers and diagrams as the proprietary and confidential property of Cisco, and states that penalties for violating the policy can include a lifetime ban on all future exams.
There is also a practical problem: you cannot know whether a leaked question is real, current or correctly answered. Practice questions written against the published exam topics teach you the reasoning instead. Certsqill offers expert-developed CCNA practice questions with an explanation for every answer option, a readiness score per exam domain, and a 7-day money-back guarantee.

How long does the CCNA certification last?
Three years. Cisco lists CCNA as valid for 3 years, and states that it does not provide extensions. To recertify you can retake the exam for your certification, move up to the next level, or earn 30 Continuing Education (CE) credits.
