What is CCNA certification?

CCNA stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate. It is Cisco’s associate-level networking certification, earned by passing one exam, 200-301, with no prerequisites. Below: what the credential means, what the exam covers, which version is current, and how a CCNA can be verified.

CCNA certification: what is it, and what does it mean?

What is CCNA certification? It is a credential issued by Cisco to people who pass the CCNA exam, 200-301. Cisco lists no prerequisites, so you do not need a degree, earlier certification or documented work experience before you book it. The certification is valid for three years.

The CCNA certification meaning is narrower than “knows networking” and broader than “knows Cisco commands”. Cisco describes the exam as testing knowledge and skills in network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals, and automation and programmability. So being CCNA certified means you passed an exam across all six of those areas, not that you specialise in one of them.

What a CCNA certification means for an employer is therefore a baseline: the holder has shown, under exam conditions, that they understand how a small-to-medium network is addressed, switched, routed and secured, and how it can be managed programmatically. It does not certify years of experience — Cisco does not ask for any.

What is on the CCNA exam?

The CCNA exam is a single, 120-minute exam, graded pass/fail, with results available online within 48 hours. What is on the CCNA exam is set out in Cisco’s published exam topics, which split the paper into six areas with fixed weightings:

  • Network Fundamentals — 20%
  • Network Access — 20%
  • IP Connectivity — 25%
  • IP Services — 10%
  • Security Fundamentals — 15%
  • Automation and Programmability — 10%

What is the current CCNA exam, and what is the latest CCNA version?

What is the current CCNA exam? Cisco names it on its CCNA page: “Implementing and Administering Cisco Solutions (200-301 CCNA) v1.1”. That also answers what is the latest CCNA version and what is the latest CCNA exam — 200-301, version 1.1. There is one exam for the certification, not a track of several, and Cisco lists its cost as $US300, or Cisco Learning Credits.

Older labels still circulate in search results and second-hand material. If a book or course does not say it covers 200-301 v1.1, check its topic list against Cisco’s current exam topics before you rely on it. Cisco registers the exam through Pearson VUE, online or at a Pearson VUE test center where available, and requires a five-calendar-day wait before a retake.

How long CCNA lasts and how you keep it

The certification is valid for three years. To recertify within that period, Cisco accepts passing the current CCNA exam, passing a higher-level Cisco certification exam, or earning 30 Continuing Education (CE) credits through Cisco training, webinars or approved courses.

CCNA certification verification: how to verify CCNA certification

When you pass a Cisco certification exam you can claim a digital certification badge through Credly; Cisco sends the claim instructions by email. Cisco describes these badges as web-enabled versions of the credential that “can be verified in real-time, online”.

So the practical way to verify CCNA certification is to ask the holder for the link to their Cisco badge and check it on Credly, rather than relying on a PDF or a line on a CV. Cisco’s badge FAQ does not say what an employer sees beyond the verified credential itself, so for anything more formal, ask the candidate to share it through Cisco directly.

Preparing for the CCNA exam

Because Cisco publishes no question count and no passing score for 200-301, the useful thing to measure before exam day is coverage: can you answer questions from every one of the six topic areas, especially IP Connectivity at 25%?

Certsqill has expert-developed CCNA practice questions with an explanation for every answer option — why the right one is right and why each wrong one is wrong — and a readiness score per exam domain, so you can see which area still needs work. It comes with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
