CCNA study guide: material, books and how to prepare

The CCNA exam, 200-301, has one official definition of what you need to know: Cisco’s published exam topics. Everything else — books, courses, labs, practice questions — is a way of covering them. This guide lists the study material Cisco itself points to, explains which books are official, and turns the topic weights into a study plan.

Start with the CCNA 200-301 exam topics

Any CCNA 200-301 study guide is only as good as its match with Cisco’s exam topics. Cisco splits the exam into six areas and publishes their weight, which is the most useful number you have for planning: it tells you where the marks are.

Print the list and use it as a checklist throughout. When you pick up any CCNA certification study guide, a course or a set of notes, check that it covers every area — and that it gives IP Connectivity, the heaviest at 25%, the space it deserves.

  • Network Fundamentals — 20%
  • Network Access — 20%
  • IP Connectivity — 25%
  • IP Services — 10%
  • Security Fundamentals — 15%
  • Automation and Programmability — 10%

Cisco CCNA study materials: what Cisco points to

On its CCNA page, Cisco lists its own CCNA study materials and learning options. These are the official CCNA study resources, and several of them are free:

Taken together, that is complete study material for CCNA certification: a structured course, a lab environment, a community and books. You do not need all of it — but it is the right place to start before looking anywhere else for CCNA exam study material.

  • Cisco U. — the Implementing and Administering Cisco Solutions | CCNA learning path, with guided study plans, pre- and post-assessments and hands-on labs
  • Cisco Networking Academy — courses Cisco describes as free, in person and online
  • Cisco Learning Network — a community with free resources such as articles, blogs and livestreams
  • CCNA Prep — a video series focused on the exam topics, and CCNA Prep On Demand, which Cisco describes as 50+ hours of resources, webinars and practice quizzes
  • CCNA guide: Jumpstart your learning journey — a downloadable Cisco guide to its learning environment and study resources
  • Cisco Learning Locator — instructor-led courses from Cisco and its authorised Learning Partners
  • Cisco Packet Tracer and Cisco Modeling Labs — the lab tools Cisco recommends for hands-on practice
  • Cisco Press — which Cisco describes as its authorised publisher of Cisco technology books

Free CCNA study guide and study material

You can prepare for a large part of the exam with free CCNA study material. Cisco Networking Academy offers courses Cisco describes as free, the Cisco Learning Network carries free community resources, and Cisco’s CCNA guide, Jumpstart your learning journey, is a free download from the CCNA page.

What a free CCNA study guide cannot do on its own is tell you whether you are ready. Pair any CCNA study guide free of charge with a way to test yourself across all six areas, and with lab time — reading about OSPF is not the same as making it work. And remember the exam itself is not free: Cisco lists it at $US300, or Cisco Learning Credits.

A CCNA study blog can be part of this too: the Cisco Learning Network hosts blogs alongside its articles and livestreams. Many candidates also keep their own — a written log of every mistake and why it happened is one of the most effective study tools there is.

The CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Library

The CCNA official cert guide is published by Cisco Press, which Cisco names on its CCNA page as its authorised publisher. The current CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Library, 2nd Edition, is a two-book set: the CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide, Volume 1, and Volume 2, both 2nd Edition.

According to Cisco Press, Volume 1 runs from introductory networking through IPv6 routing — Ethernet LANs, VLANs, STP, IPv4 addressing and routing, OSPF and IPv6. The CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Volume 2 covers wireless LANs, IP access control lists, security services, IP services, network architecture and network automation. Cisco Press says the books are updated annually to align with changes to Cisco’s exam blueprint.

So the CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Library 2nd Edition is the official CCNA cert guide in its current form; if you are buying the CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Volume 2 second edition on its own, make sure you pair it with the matching Volume 1. An older first edition was written for an earlier version of the exam blueprint, so check the edition before you buy second-hand.

Is there a CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide PDF?

Yes, legitimately — as an eBook. Cisco Press sells a Premium Edition eBook and Practice Test, which includes the eBook in PDF and EPUB formats plus Pearson Test Prep practice tests; for Volume 1, Cisco Press lists four full practice exams. That is where a CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Volume 1 PDF, or the CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Library PDF, legitimately comes from.

Copies of the CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Library 2nd Edition PDF offered as free downloads elsewhere are not from the publisher. The same applies to any CCNA study guide PDF that reproduces a commercial book: if you did not buy it, it is a copyright problem — and you cannot be sure which edition, or which exam version, it was written for.

If you just want a free CCNA PDF study guide that is legitimate, Cisco’s own CCNA guide, Jumpstart your learning journey, is a download from the CCNA page — it covers Cisco’s learning environment and study resources rather than the exam content itself.

Choosing a CCNA study book

There is no single best CCNA study guide for everyone, but there are clear tests for any CCNA study book. Does it say it covers exam 200-301 in its current version? Does it cover all six exam topic areas? Is it a recent edition? Does it include labs or exercises, not only reading?

For the best study material for CCNA, those tests matter more than reputation. A CCNA certification book that skips Automation and Programmability, or treats it as an afterthought, leaves 10% of the exam uncovered. Among CCNA study books, and for anyone looking for a CCNA cert book, the Official Cert Guide is usually the starting point because Cisco Press is Cisco’s authorised publisher — but whichever CCNA study guide book you choose, check it against the exam topics list, not the other way round.

The phrase “book CCNA exam” often means something else entirely: booking a seat. CCNA exam booking runs through Pearson VUE — via Cisco’s Certification Tracker portal, by phone, or at a Pearson VUE test center where available. In the U.S. and Canada, Cisco says you can schedule up to six weeks ahead and as late as the same day.

How to study for the CCNA exam

The best way to study for the CCNA combines three things: a structured pass through the material, regular lab work, and practice questions that show you where you are weak. Cisco itself recommends spending time in labs with Cisco Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs.

A practical order for how to study for CCNA:

Cisco publishes no figure for CCNA study time, because it depends on your starting point. Someone who already configures switches and routers at work needs far less than someone new to networking. Plan by coverage instead: you are ready when you can handle questions from all six areas, not when a set number of weeks has passed.

  • Read the exam topics list and mark each item as known, shaky or new.
  • Work through one structured source — the Cisco U. learning path, a Networking Academy course or the Official Cert Guide — area by area.
  • Lab every configuration topic as you meet it: VLANs, STP, OSPF, ACLs, NAT. Do not leave labs to the end.
  • Give IP Connectivity (25%) and the two 20% areas the most time.
  • Use practice questions to find weak areas, then go back to the material for those areas only.

CCNA: how to prepare in the last weeks

Late Cisco CCNA exam preparation is about precision. The exam is 120 minutes, graded pass/fail, with results online within 48 hours, and Cisco publishes no passing score and no question count — so practice percentages cannot be converted into a predicted result. What practice can tell you is which topic areas still cost you points.

Two logistics points belong in your Cisco CCNA exam prep. If you do not pass, Cisco requires you to wait five calendar days before a retake. And on languages, Cisco’s CCNA page lists English in the exam details and English and Japanese in its FAQ, so confirm the options when you book.

Certsqill’s CCNA practice questions are expert-developed against Cisco’s exam topics, with an explanation for every answer option — why the right one is right and why each wrong one is wrong — and a readiness score per exam domain. They come with a 7-day money-back guarantee.

CCNA study guide: questions people ask

What is the best CCNA study material?

Start with Cisco’s exam topics, then one structured source — the Cisco U. learning path, a Cisco Networking Academy course or the CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide from Cisco Press — plus labs and practice questions. The best CCNA study material is the one that covers all six areas of the current exam.

What is the CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide?

The official study book series from Cisco Press, Cisco’s authorised publisher. The current CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide Library, 2nd Edition, contains Volume 1 and Volume 2. Source: Cisco Press, checked 9 October 2026.

Where can I get CCNA study material free of charge?

Cisco offers a downloadable CCNA guide, Jumpstart your learning journey, plus free Cisco Networking Academy courses and free community resources on the Cisco Learning Network. Source: Cisco CCNA page, checked 9 October 2026.

How should I study for the CCNA?

Work through Cisco’s six exam topic areas with one structured source, lab every configuration topic as you go, and use practice questions to find weak areas. Give IP Connectivity, the heaviest area at 25%, the most time.

How to study for CCNA exam topics I find hard?

Lab them. Cisco recommends Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs, and configuration topics such as OSPF or ACLs stick far better when you have built them yourself.

How long should CCNA study take?

Cisco publishes no figure. It depends on your starting point; plan by coverage of the six exam areas rather than by a number of weeks.

Is there an official Cisco CCNA exam study guide?

Not as a single document under that name. Cisco’s CCNA page lists the exam topics plus Cisco U., Cisco Networking Academy, the Cisco Learning Network, CCNA Prep and Cisco Press. Checked 9 October 2026.

What is the best way to study for CCNA alongside a full-time job?

Short, regular sessions with a lab open beat long weekend reading. Work one exam area at a time and test yourself on it before moving on.

How do I book the CCNA exam?

Through Pearson VUE — via Cisco’s Certification Tracker portal, by phone, or at a Pearson VUE test center where available. Source: Cisco CCNA page, checked 9 October 2026.

How to prepare for CCNA if I am new to networking?

Start with a structured course such as Cisco Networking Academy or the Cisco U. learning path rather than a book alone, and build labs from the first week.

Which books for CCNA certification are official?

The Official Cert Guide series from Cisco Press, which Cisco names as its authorised publisher. Any other book is third-party; judge it against the exam topics. Checked 9 October 2026.

What is the best study guide for CCNA beginners?

One that covers all six exam areas of the current 200-301 exam, includes labs, and is a recent edition. For beginners, a structured course alongside the book helps more than a book alone.

Is a CCNA certification guide enough on its own?

Rarely. A book covers the theory; you still need lab time and practice questions to check your coverage of all six exam areas.
