Terraform Professional renamed to Terraform Advanced
If you searched for the Terraform Authoring and Operations Professional exam, you will now find it under a new name. HashiCorp has renamed the level of its lab-based certifications to Advanced: the exam is now Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced, and its Vault counterpart is Vault Operations Advanced. HashiCorp dates the change to Fall 2026 and says it is based on years of data analysis and feedback from its certification community.
Nothing about the exam itself changes. HashiCorp states that the content and format remain the same: lab-based scenarios that require you to demonstrate skills using Terraform. The change also applies to credentials earned before it. Existing Terraform Professional holders become HashiCorp Certified: Advanced holders, their badges and certificates are updated automatically in Credly and in their HashiCorp Certifications account, and existing badge links keep working.

The new Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional exam
The word “Professional” does not disappear from the Terraform track. HashiCorp announces a separate, new exam called Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional (002). It is multiple choice rather than lab-based, takes 90 minutes, is online proctored, in English, tests Terraform 1.15 and is valid for 2 years.
As of 10 October 2026 it is not yet bookable: HashiCorp lists it as coming soon, says it will launch at IBM TechXchange 2026 in Atlanta in October 2026, and shows the price as coming soon. Until registration opens, the Terraform professional certification you can actually book at this level is the lab-based Advanced exam described on this page.

What is the Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced certification?
It is HashiCorp’s hands-on Terraform credential for people who already run Terraform in production. HashiCorp says the exam assesses knowledge of Terraform best practices and aims at candidates with production-tested experience in configuration authoring and workflows: modules, dynamic HCL and scalable, collaborative workflows.
You can earn the same certification using either the AWS or the Azure provider with Terraform, so you pick the cloud you know best. The tested product version is Terraform 1.6.

How much does the Terraform professional exam cost?
The Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced exam costs $295 USD, plus locally applicable taxes and fees. A free retake is included in that price, which takes some of the pressure off a first attempt at a four-hour lab exam.
For the new multiple-choice Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional exam, HashiCorp has not yet published a price; the certification page shows it as coming soon.

What is the Terraform Advanced exam format?
The exam combines lab-based scenarios with multiple-choice questions and runs for 4 hours with one 15-minute break. It is online proctored and offered in English.
In the lab part you work in a pre-provisioned Linux environment. Each scenario consists of multiple tasks, you may complete the labs in any order, and each lab is scored independently, so a bad lab does not drag down the others. Terraform documentation is available during the exam, with limited Terraform Registry and cloud provider documentation access and the cloud provider console; external search engines and other websites are not. HashiCorp also notes that exam preparation tutorials will not be available for reference.
HashiCorp does not publish the number of labs or multiple-choice questions, and it does not publish a passing score.

What is on the Terraform Advanced exam?
HashiCorp publishes six exam objectives. According to the official learning path, the HCP Terraform objective is assessed through multiple-choice questions only; the other five are where the lab work happens.
- Manage resource lifecycle — init, plan, apply and destroy, state management, importing resources and handling drift
- Develop and troubleshoot dynamic configuration — validation, data sources, functions, meta-arguments, complex variables and outputs, sensitive data
- Develop collaborative Terraform workflows — version constraints, remote state, automation, sharing data across configurations and workspaces
- Create, maintain, and use Terraform modules — creating, using, refactoring and versioning modules
- Configure and use Terraform providers — aliasing, versioning, sourcing, upgrades, authentication and troubleshooting
- Collaborate on infrastructure as code using HCP Terraform — run workflow, workspaces and access, provider credentials, policy as code

Terraform professional certification prerequisites
HashiCorp states that experience with Terraform in a production setting is necessary. It strongly recommends the Terraform Associate certification, or equivalent experience, before this exam.
The other listed skills are practical: Linux command-line work such as listing and editing files, using cloud credentials, familiarity with YAML, JSON, HCL and CSV, an understanding of TCP/IP, UDP and the networking stack, and advanced configuration authoring with a deep understanding of Terraform workflows.

Terraform Advanced study guide: official resources
HashiCorp’s own study material is the place to start. The official learning path walks through each of the six objectives with study tips, and the exam content list and exam orientation explain what is tested and how the lab environment behaves. HashiCorp’s advice is to prepare through hands-on practice and production experience, and its next step after the learning path is to work through practice labs in a sandbox.
Because the exam is lab-based, study the way you will be tested: import existing resources, scope plans with resource targeting, refactor a configuration into versioned modules, configure aliased providers and remote state, and do it in the cloud provider you plan to choose for the exam.

How long is the certification valid and how do you renew it?
The Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced certification expires after 2 years. To renew, you retake the exam: from 6 months before your expiration date, passing extends your current credentials’ expiration date. You can also retake it at any time, including after expiry, and passing gives you a new set of credentials with a new expiration date.
HashiCorp also lists passing the new Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional exam as a recertification option, once that exam is available.

Terraform Advanced practice questions
Certsqill’s practice questions for this exam come with an explanation for every option and a readiness score per domain. For the lab part of the exam, hands-on practice in your own Terraform environment remains essential.
