SAFe Advanced Scrum Master certification: course, exam and renewal
The SAFe Advanced Scrum Master certification (SASM) is Scaled Agile’s advanced credential for experienced Scrum Masters working across multiple teams. Since March 31, 2026 it is taught as the AI-Empowered SAFe Advanced Scrum Master course, a 2-day instructor-led class, and the legacy course is being retired. The exam has 60 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes with an 82% passing score; renewal is yearly at $295 through the SAFe Advanced tier.

What is the SAFe Advanced Scrum Master certification?
The SAFe Advanced Scrum Master certification is Scaled Agile’s next step after SAFe Scrum Master. Scaled Agile describes it as being for experienced Scrum Masters and team leaders facilitating success in multi-team environments, and rates it at advanced level.
The course outcomes show the focus: facilitating cross-team collaboration, optimising flow, managing multi-team engagement and driving high-performing teams. Where the foundational Scrum Master course teaches the role inside one team, SASM is about the Scrum Master’s influence across an Agile Release Train.

AI-Empowered SASM: what changed in 2026
Scaled Agile launched an upgraded course, AI-Empowered SAFe Advanced Scrum Master, on March 31, 2026, and the certification is now called the AI-Empowered SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM) Certification. The new course adds AI foundations and responsible AI practice for Scrum Master facilitation, while keeping the conflict and collaboration content and the hands-on learning lab.
Scaled Agile stated that the legacy Advanced Scrum Master course would be retired 90 days after the new version’s release; it does not publish a separate calendar date. Check that any class you book is the AI-Empowered version.
If you already hold the credential, Scaled Agile says it will not take away your existing badges. Holders of a SASM 6.0 or ASM badge can move to the AI-Empowered version by completing the AI Skills for Scrum Masters SAFe Skill on SAFe Studio.

SAFe Advanced Scrum Master course and training
The AI-Empowered SASM course is a 2-day instructor-led training, offered in virtual and in-person classes. Scaled Agile does not publish a course price on its training page, so check the price with the class you book.
The course includes perpetual access to the course workbook and to SAFe Studio for further preparation, an unlimited practice test with question-level feedback, and the certification exam with a coaching report. Exam access comes through your Learning Plan after you complete the course.
Scaled Agile recommends the course for experienced Scrum Masters who already hold the SAFe Scrum Master certification and understand SAFe principles and team-level facilitation.

SAFe Advanced Scrum Master exam format and passing score
The exam has 60 multiple-choice, single-select questions and a timebox of 120 minutes. It is web-based and closed book, with no outside assistance, and you must accept the candidate agreement to start it.
The passing score is 82%, which is demanding: you can afford to miss only about one question in six. Treat that as the reason to prepare across all five domains rather than relying on the strongest one.

What is on the SASM exam?
Scaled Agile’s exam study guide lists five domains with weightings. Building high-performing teams and improving flow together make up roughly half of the exam; conflict and ART performance take most of the rest.
The domain on addressing conflict reflects the course content that carried over from the legacy version, so expect scenario questions about facilitating disagreement between teams and stakeholders.

Exam attempts and retake costs
Your first two attempts are included in the course registration fee or exam fee, as long as you take them within 60 days of completing the course or buying the exam. After that, a retake costs $50 for the unproctored exam or $450 for the proctored exam.
Waiting times grow with each attempt: the first retake is available immediately, the second 10 days after the first retake, the third 30 days after the second, and every further attempt needs a 30-day gap.

How to renew the SAFe Advanced Scrum Master certification
SAFe certifications are renewed every year. SASM belongs to the SAFe Advanced renewal tier, which costs $295 per year plus applicable tax — more than the $195 SAFe Foundational tier that renews SAFe Scrum Master. The SAFe Advanced tier also renews other advanced credentials such as Release Train Engineer and Lean Portfolio Management.
Scaled Agile says there are no late fees or exam retakes required to maintain a certification, and you can renew up to 270 days before your current certification expires.

SAFe Advanced Scrum Master salary and career value
Scaled Agile does not publish salary figures for SASM holders. Its certification page speaks only in general terms of higher earning potential and new career opportunities, so this page does not quote a number.
What the credential does signal is specific: Scaled Agile links it to roles such as Agile Coach, Engineering Manager and future Release Train Engineer. If your next step is coaching several teams or moving towards the RTE role, SASM is the SAFe credential built for that path.

SAFe Advanced Scrum Master vs SAFe Scrum Master
SAFe Scrum Master is the foundational credential; SAFe Advanced Scrum Master builds on it. Scaled Agile recommends SASM for experienced Scrum Masters who are already SSM-certified, and the two sit in different renewal tiers: Foundational at $195 per year, Advanced at $295.
The exams differ too. The advanced exam has 60 questions in 120 minutes with an 82% passing score, and its domains move beyond the single team to flow, conflict and ART performance.

Exam integrity and SAFe Advanced Scrum Master practice questions
Scaled Agile’s candidate agreement forbids seeking or using any material containing actual exam questions or answers, and reproducing or disclosing exam content in any form. Scaled Agile can revoke a certification for cheating or for disclosing exam questions. The official practice test, which mirrors the exam’s question count, timebox and domains with unlimited attempts, is the sanctioned way to rehearse — though Scaled Agile notes that passing it does not guarantee passing the exam.
