What is the SAFe POPM certification?

POPM stands for Product Owner/Product Manager. The SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager POPM certification is issued by Scaled Agile, Inc., the company behind the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). Scaled Agile describes it as a credential for professionals responsible for maximising value delivery across the enterprise.

The certification covers two roles in one. Product Owners own the team backlog and turn features into stories; Product Managers guide the ART backlog and roadmap and represent the customer. Scaled Agile has one SAFe certification Product Owner and Product Manager roles share, not one each. That is why one exam serves both titles, and why a certified SAFe Product Owner Product Manager is expected to work across team and programme level.

Scaled Agile classes it as a foundational certification and lists PMI PDUs and Scrum CEUs among what the course can count towards.

AI-Empowered POPM: what changed in 2026

In 2026 Scaled Agile released an updated version, numbered 26.5, and the certification is now called AI-Empowered SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager. The new learning plan and licences became available on 5 May 2026. The former AI lesson is integrated throughout the course, and the exam adds topics on AI-empowered SAFe, crafting AI prompts and responsible AI.

Since 4 August 2026, legacy POPM classes can no longer be scheduled. Learners from legacy classes receive SAFe 6 badges, and passing an earlier exam does not carry over: the new certification requires passing the current exam.

If you already hold the SAFe 6 POPM, it stays on record. With an active certification you can upgrade at no extra cost — through the AI Skills for Product Owners or AI Skills for Product Managers SAFe Skill if you have SAFe Skills access, or otherwise by taking the new course and exam — and you then hold both. Scaled Agile also notes that the update is currently available in select languages only.

SAFe POPM exam format and passing score

The SAFe POPM exam has 45 multiple-choice, single-select questions in 90 minutes. It is web-based and closed book, with no outside assistance, and you must accept the Candidate Agreement before you start. The pass mark is 82%, so there is little room for error.

Scaled Agile publishes the domain weights for the current exam. Iteration execution carries the most weight, and the new AI domain is as large as the roles domain:

SAFe POPM certification cost

The usual route is through the course. Scaled Agile states that the first two exam attempts are included in your course registration fee when taken within 60 days of course completion. The course fee itself is set by whoever delivers the class; Scaled Agile’s course page shows no price.

After two failed attempts, a retake costs US$50. The waits grow: the third attempt is available immediately, the fourth after 10 days, the fifth after 30 days, and each further attempt after another 30.

There is also a proctored route without a course. The POPM certification page offers a proctored exam with the note that the training course is not required. Scaled Agile’s proctored exam FAQ gives the fee as US$495 plus tax, non-refundable, with two attempts included.

SAFe POPM certification training and courses

SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM) certification training means the SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager course, delivered by Scaled Agile and its training partners. The course objectives include day-to-day backlog ownership and forecasting, and leading and supporting PI Planning to align roadmaps and vision with business goals.

Scaled Agile lists the course in English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, while noting that the AI-Empowered update is so far available in select languages only — ask the provider which version a class teaches before you book.

Whether you call it SAFe POPM training, a SAFe POPM course or SAFe Product Owner Product Manager certification training, the deciding question is the same: does it lead to the current AI-Empowered exam, and does the 60-day exam window fit your schedule?

SAFe POPM practice test and exam preparation

Scaled Agile provides a practice test with the course: unlimited attempts, question-level feedback and a coaching report. It matches the real exam in question count, difficulty, timebox and domains, but Scaled Agile is explicit that passing it does not guarantee passing the final exam.

A good study plan follows the domain weights. With iteration execution at 28–30% and an 82% pass mark, a weak spot there is costly; the new AI domain is worth as much as the roles domain and is new material even for experienced Product Owners.

SAFe POPM exam questions, dumps and PDFs

Scaled Agile’s Candidate Agreement prohibits seeking or using any materials containing actual exam questions or answers, and reproducing or disclosing exam content in any form. Scaled Agile reserves the right to revoke a certification over such violations.

So a SAFe POPM exam questions and answers PDF or any other dump that claims to show the real exam puts the certification at risk. The legitimate source of SAFe Agile POPM exam questions in the real style is Scaled Agile’s own practice test.

How to renew SAFe POPM

SAFe certifications renew every year. POPM is in Scaled Agile’s Foundational tier, which costs US$195 a year plus tax, and the certification page requires at least 12 continuing education units each year.

You can renew up to 270 days before expiry. If the certification lapses, Scaled Agile states that you can still renew afterwards with no late fees or exam retakes.

SAFe POPM vs SAFe Scrum Master

Both are foundational SAFe certifications with exams of 45 questions in 90 minutes, and both have an AI-Empowered version with an AI domain. The SAFe Scrum Master exam needs 80% to pass; SAFe POPM needs 82%.

The roles differ: the Scrum Master exam is about facilitating Scrum, PI Planning and iteration execution as a coach, while POPM is about owning the backlog, the roadmap and the customer view. Pick the one that matches your role on the Agile Release Train.
